Passage 1

Rachel Carson was born in 1907 in Springsdale, Pennsylvania. She studied biology in college and
zoology at Johns Hopkins University, where she received her master’s degree in 1933. In 1936, she was hired
by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, where she worked most of her life.

Carson’s first book, Under the Sea Wind, was published in 1941. It received excellent reviews, but sales
were poor until it was reissued in 1952. In that year, she published The Sea Around Us, which provided a
fascinating look beneath the ocean’s surface, emphasizing human history as well as geology and marine
biology. Her imagery and language had a poetic quality. Carson consulted no less than 1,000 printed sources.
She had voluminous correspondence and frequent discussions with experts in the field. However, she always
realized the limitations of her non-technical readers.

In 1962, Carson published Silence Spring, a book that sparked considerable controversy. It proved how
much harm was done by the uncontrolled, reckless use of insecticides. She detailed how they poison the food
supply of animals, kill birds, and contaminate human food. At that time, spokesmen for the chemical industry
mounted personal attacks against Carson and issued propaganda to indicate that her findings were flawed.

Passage 2

After two decades of growing student enrollments and economic prosperity, business schools in the
United States have started to face harder times. Only Harvard's MBA School has shown a substantial increase in
enrollment in recent years. Both Princeton and Stanford have seen decreases in their enrollments. Since 1990,
the number of people receiving Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degrees, has dropped about 3
percent to 75,000, and the trend of lower enrollment rates is expected to continue.

There are two factors causing this decrease in students seeking an MBA degree. The first one is that
many graduates of four-year colleges are finding that an MBA degree does not guarantee a plush job on Wall
Street, or in other financial districts of major American cities. Many of the entry-level management jobs are
going to students graduating with Master of Arts degrees in English and the humanities as well as those
holding MBA degrees. Students have asked the question, "Is an MBA degree really what I need to be best
prepared for getting a good job?" The second major factor has been the cutting of American payrolls and the
lower number of entry-level jobs being offered. Business needs are changing, and MBA schools are
struggling to meet the new demands.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the following questions.

Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in the small Tuscan town of Vinci, near Florence. He
was the son of a wealthy Florentine public official and a peasant woman. In the mid-1460s, the family settled
in Florence, where Leonardo was given the best education that Florence could offer. He rapidly advanced
socially and intellectually. He was handsome, persuasive in conversation, and a fine musician and
improviser. About in 1466 he apprenticed as a studio boy to Andrea Del Verrocchio. In Verrocchio’s
workshop, Leonardo was introduced to many activities, from the painting of altarpieces and panel pictures to
the creation of large sculptural projects. In 1472, he was entered in the painter’s guild of Florence, and in
1476, he was still mentioned as Verrocchio’s assistant. In Verrocchio’s Baptism of Christ, the kneeling angel
at the left of the painting is by Leonardo.

In 1478, Leonardo became an independent master. His first commission, to paint an altarpiece for the
chapel of the Palazzo Vecchino, the Florentine town hall, was never executed. His first large painting, The
Adoration of the Magi, left unfinished, was ordered in 1481 for the Monastery of San Donato a Scopeto,
Florence. Other works ascribed to his youth are the so-called Benois Madonna, the portrait Ginerva de’
Benci, and the unfinished Saint Jerome.

In 1482, Leonardos career moved into high gear when he entered the service of the duke of Milan,
Ludovico Sforza, having written the duke an astonishing letter in which he stated that he could build portable
bridges; that he knew the techniques of constructing bombardments and of making cannons; that he could
build ships as well as armored vehicles, catapults, and other war machines; and that he could execute

sculpture in marble, bronze, and clay. He served as a principal engineer in the duke’s numerous military
enterprises and was so active also as an architect. In addition, he assisted the Italian mathematician Luca
Pacioli in the celebrated work Divina Proportione.

Evidence indicates that Leonardo had apprentices and pupils in Milan, for whom he probably wrote
the various texts later compiled as Treatise on Painting. The most important of his own paintings during the
early Milan period was The Virgin of the Rocks, two versions of which exist; he worked on the compositions
for a long time, as was his custom, seemingly unwilling to finish what he had begun.

From 1495 to 1496, Leonardo labored on his masterpiece, The Last Super, a mural in the refectory
of the Monastery of Santa Maria Delle Grazie, Milan. Unfortunately, his experimental use of oil on dry plaster
was technically unsound, and by 1500 its deterioration had begun. Since 1726 attempts have been made,
unsuccessfully, to restore it; a concerted restoration and conservation program, making use of the latest
technology, was begun in 1977 and is reversing some of the damage. Although much of the original surface
is gone, the majesty of the composition and the penetrating characterization of the figures give a fleeting
vision of its vanished splendor.

During his long stay in Milan, Leonardo also produced other paintings and drawings, most of which
have been lost, theater designs, architectural drawings, and models for the dome of Milan Cathedral. His
largest commission was for a colossal bronze monument to Francesco Sforza, father of Ludovico, in the
courtyard of Castello Sforzesco. In December 1499, however, the Sforza family was driven from Milan by
French forces; Leonardo left the statue unfinished and he returned to Florence in 1500.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the following questions.

It is said that George Washington was one of the first to realize how important the building of canals
would be to the nation’s development. In fact, before he became the President, he headed the first company
in the United States to build a canal, which was to connect the Ohio and Potomac rivers. It was never
completed, but it showed the nation the feasibility of canals. As the country expanded westward, settlers in
western New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio needed a means to ship goods. Canals linking natural
waterways seemed to supply an effective method.

In 1791, engineers commissioned by the state of New York investigated the possibility of a canal
between Albany on the Hudson River and Buffalo on Lake Eric to link the Great Lakes area with the Atlantic
seacoast. It would avoid the mountains that served as a barrier to canals from the Delaware and Potomac
rivers.

The first attempt to dig the canal, to be called the Eric Canal, was made by private companies but
only a comparatively small portion was built before the project was halted for lack of funds. The cost of the
prospect was an estimated $5 million, an enormous amount for those days. There was some
on-again-off-again federal funding, but this time the War of 1812 put an end to construction. In 1817, DeWitt Clinton was
elected Governor of New York and persuaded the state to finance and build the canal. It was completed in
1825, costing $2 million more than expected.

The canal rapidly lived up to its sponsors’ faith, quickly paying for itself through tolls. It was far more
economical than any other form of transportation at the time. It permitted trade between the Great Lake
region and the East coast, robbing the Mississippi River of much of its traffic. It allowed New York to supplant
Boston, Philadelphia, and other eastern cities as the chief center of both domestic and foreign commerce.
Cities sprang up along the canal. It also contributed in a number of ways to the North’s victory over the South
in the Civil War.

An expansion of the canal was planned in 1849. Increased traffic would undoubtedly have warranted
its construction had it not been for the railroads.

Question 71: Why does the author most likely mention George Washington in the first paragraph?
A. He was President at the time the Eric Canal was built.

B. He commissioned engineers to study the possibility of building the Eric Canal.
C. He successfully opened the first canal in the United States.

D. He was involved in pioneering efforts to build canals.

Charles A. Lindbergh is remembered as the first person to make a nonstop solo flight

across the Atlantic, in 1927. This feat, when Lindbergh was only twenty-five years old, assured him a
lifetime of fame and public attention.

Charles Augustus Lindbergh was more interested in flying airplanes than he was in studying.
He dropped out of the University of Wisconsin after two years to earn a living performing daredevil
airplane stunts at country fairs. Two years later, he joined the United States Army so that he could go
to the Army Aie Service flight-training school. After completing his training, he was hired to fly mail
between St. Louis and Chicago. Then came the historic flight across the Atlantic. In 1919, a New
York City hotel owner offered a prize of $25,000 to the first pilot to fly nonstop from New York to
Paris. Nine St. Louis business leaders helped pay for the plane Lindbergh designed especially for the
flight. Lindbergh tested the plane by flying it from San Diego to New York, with an overnight stop in
St. Louis. The flight took only 20hours and 21minutes, a transcontinental record.

Nine days later, on May 20, 1927, Lindbergh took off from Long Island, New York, at 7:52
a.m. He landed at Paris on May 21 at 10:21 p.m. He had flown more than 3,600 miles in less than
thirty four hours. His flight made news around the world. He was given awards and parades
everywhere he went. He was presented with the U.S.Congressional Medal of Honor and the first
Distinguished Flying Cross. For a long time, Lindbergh toured the world as a US goodwill
ambassador. He met his future wife, Anne Morrow, in Mexico, where her father was the United
States ambassador.

During the 1930s, Charles and Anne Lindbergh worked for various airline companies, charting
new commercial air routes. In 1931, for a major airline, they charted a new route from the east coast
of the United States to the Orient. The shortest, most efficient route was a great curve across Canada,
over Alaska, and down to China and Japan. Most pilots familiar with the Arctic did not believe that
such a route was possible. The Lindberghs took on the task of proving that it was. They arranged for
fuel and supplies to be set out along the route. On July 29, they took off from Long Island in a
specially equipped small seaplane. They flew by day and each night landed on a lake or a river and
camped. Near Nome, Alaska, they had their first serious emergency. Out of daylight and nearly out of
fuel, they were forced down in a small ocean inlet. In the next morning’s light, they discovered they

had landed on barely three feet of water. On September 19, after two more emergency landings and
numerous close calls, they landed in China with the maps for a safe airline passenger route.

flew over fifty combat missions in the Pacific. In the 1950s, Lindbergh helped design the famous 747
jet airliner. In the late 1960s, he spoke widely on conservation issues. He died August 1974, having
lived through aviation history from the time of the first powered flight to the first steps on the moon
and having influenced a big part of that history himself.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from number 36 to 45

Since water is the basis of life, composing the greater part of the tissues of all living things,
the crucial problem of desert animals is to survive in a world where sources of flowing water
are rare. And since man’s inexorable necessity is to absorb large quantities of water at

frequent intervals, he can scarcely comprehend that many creatures of the desert pass their
entire lives without a single drop.

Uncompromising as it is, the desert has not eliminated life but only those forms unable to
withstand its desiccating effects. No moist-skinned, water-loving animals can exist there.
Few large animals are found. The giants of the North American desert are the deer, the
coyote, and the bobcat. Since desert country is open, it holds more swift-footed running and
leaping creatures than the tangled forest. Its population is largely nocturnal, silent, filled with
reticence, and ruled by stealth. Yet they are not emaciated. Having adapted to their austere
environment, they are as healthy as animals anywhere else in the word.

The secret of their adjustment lies in the combination of behavior and physiology. None
could survive if, like mad dogs and Englishmen, they went out in the midday sun; many
would die in a matter of minutes. So most of them pass the burning hours asleep in cool,
humid burrows underneath the ground, emerging to hunt only by night. The surface of the
sun-baked desert averages around 150 degrees, but 18 inches down the temperature is
only 60 degrees.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to

Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being
corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand
times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around
him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other
people’s. In the same way, children learn all the other things they learn to do without being
taught – to talk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle – compare their own performances with
those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never
give a child a chance to find out his mistakes for himself, let alone correct them. We do it all
for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed
out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the
teacher. Let him do it himself. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it,
what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of
saying or doing this or not.

Let them get on with this job in the way that seems most sensible to them, with our help as
school teachers if they ask for it. The idea that there is a body of knowledge to be learnt at
school and used for the rest of one’s life is nonsense in a world as complicated and rapidly
changing as ours. Anxious parents and teachers say, “But suppose they fail to learn
something essential, something they will need to get on in the world?” Don’t worry! If it is
essential, they will go out into the world and learn it.

The growing interest of consumers in the safety and nutritional quality of the typical North
American diet is a welcome development. However, much of this interest has been
sparked by sweeping claims that the foods supply is unsafe or inadequate in the meeting
nutritional needs. Although most of these claims are not supported by scientific evidence,
the preponderance of written material advancing such claims makes it difficult for the
general public to separate fact from fiction. As a result, claims that eating a diet consisting
entirely of organically grown foods prevents or cures disease or provides other benefits to
health have become widely publicized and formed the basic for folklore.

Almost daily the public is besieged by claims for “no-aging” diets, new vitamins, and
other wonder foods. There are numerous unsubstantiated reports that natural vitamins are
superior to synthetic ones, that fertilized eggs are nutritionally superior to unfertilized eggs,
that untreated grains are better than fumigated grains, and the like.

One thing that most organically grown foods products seem to have in common is that
they cost more than conventionally grown foods. But in many cases consumers are misled if
they believe foods. So there is real cause for concern if consumers, particularly those with
limited incomes, distrust the regular food supply and buy expensive organic foods instead.
Question 66 The “ welcome development” mentioned in paragraph 2 is an increase in

A. interest in food safety and nutrition among North Americans.
B. the nutritional quality of the typical North American diet.
C. the amount of healthy foods grown in North America.
D. the number of consumers in North America.

Question 67. According to the first paragraph, which of the following is true about the term

“organic foods”?

A. It is accepted by most nutritionists. B. It has been used only in recent years.

C. It has no fixed meaning D. It is seldom used by consumers.

Question 68. The author implies that there is cause for concern if consumers with limited
incomes buy organic foods instead of conventionally grown foods because .

A. organic foods can be more expensive but are often no better than conventionally
grown foods.

B. many organic foods are actually less nutritious than similar conventionally grown
foods.

C. conventionally grown foods are more readily available than organic foods.
D. too many farmers will stop using conventional methods to grow food crops.

Question 69. According to the last paragraph, consumers who believe that organic foods are
better than conventionally grown foods are often .

Read the following passage and choose the best answers to the questions.

Until recently, most American entrepreneurs were men. Discrimination against women
in business, the demands of caring for families, and lack of business training had kept the
number of women entrepreneurs small. Now, however, businesses owned by women account
for more than $40 billion in annual revenues, and this figure is likely to continue rising
throughout the 1990s. As Carolyn Doppelt Gray, an official of the Small Business

Administration, has noted. “The 1970s was the decade of women entering management, and
the 1980s turned out to be the decade of the woman entrepreneur.”

What are some of the factors behind this trend? For one thing, as more women earn
advanced degrees in business and enter the corporate world, they are finding obstacles.
Women are still excluded from most executive suites. Charlotte Taylor, a management
consultant, had noted, “In the 1970s women believed if they got an MBA and worked hard
they could become chairman of the board. Now they have found out that isn’t going to
happen, so they go out on their own.”

(44)

Of course, many women who start their own businesses fail, just as men often do. They
still face hurdles in the business world, especially problems in raising money; the banking
and finance world is still dominated by men, and old attitudes die hard. Most businesses
owned by women are still quite small.

But the situation is changing; there are likely to be many more Sandra Kurtizig in the
years ahead.

Read the following passage and choose the best answers to the questions.

Scientists believe that dinosaurs came into being about 180 million years ago and died
out about 60 million years ago. Since dinosaurs were reptiles, they must have developed from
reptiles that lived before them.

The first reptiles appeared long before the dinosaurs. They were able to live in water and
on land. They hatched eggs and the young ones had legs and lungs. They could breathe air and
probably ate insects.

Then the other reptiles became larger and stronger. Some looked like big lizards and
others like turtles. They had short tails, thick legs and big heads. They ate plants.

The first dinosaurs to develop resembled their reptile ancestors. They were slender and
probably no bigger than a turkey and, like a turkey, they walked on their hind legs. Some
kinds remained small, but others grew heavier and longer. There were even a few that were

six meters long, weighing as much as an elephant. They had small heads and short, blunt
teeth, which were only good for eating plants. They lived in low, swampy places.

Then came the next period in the Age of the Reptiles. Some of the plant-eating dinosaurs
became so large that even four legs could not support them on land. These were the largest of
all the reptiles. The largest dinosaurs were probably the biggest animals that ever walked the
Earth. They had to spend most of their lives in rivers and swamps. One of these giants was the
Brontosaurus, 25 meters long and weighing about 40,000 kilograms!

At the same time, other dinosaurs were able to walk about on land. One of these, the
Allosaurus, was 10 meters long, had sharp teeth and claws and fed on the Brontosaurus and
other plant eaters!

(47)

There are other scientists who believe that the dinosaurs disappeared because of an
incident that happened 65 million years ago. An enormous and very heavy asteroid hit the
Earth. There was a huge explosion and this caused tons of dust to be blasted into the Earth’s
atmosphere. There was such a thick layer of dust covering our Earth that it blocked out
sunlight for as long as five years. That was how plants died and the dinosaurs were deprived
of food. Eventually they starved to death.

69. Which of the following statements about the first reptiles is NOT true?

A. They laid eggs. B. They were the ancestor of dinosaurs.
C. They were both land and sea animals. D. They existed about 180 million years
ago.

70. What did the earliest reptiles feed on?

C. survived in the same way as D. had similarities to

72. How were the first dinosaurs similar to reptiles?

A. They walked on their fore legs. B. They were plant eaters.
C. They were of the same size. D. They had big heads.
73. When did the Earth begin to have seasons?

A. 100 million years ago B. 65 million years ago C. 180 million
years ago D. 60 million years ago

74. From the fifth paragraph, we know that _______.
A. the Brontosaurus fed on other smaller dinosaurs
B. the Brontosaurus had sharp claws and teeth

C. the largest of the dinosaurs had two legs that couldn’t support them.
D. giant dinosaurs lived mostly in swamps and rivers

explosion

77. According to the passage, dinosaurs disappeared NOT because_______.

A. they were killed by enemies B. they were killed in an explosion
C. they couldn’t adapt to climatic changes D. they died of starvation

78. According to the next text, which is the correct order of appearance of the dinosaurs?

Until recently, hunting for treasure from shipwrecks was mostly fantasy; with recent
technological advances, however, the search for sunken treasure has become more popular as
a legitimate endeavor. This has caused a debate between those wanting to salvage the wrecks

(55)

Treasure hunters are spurred on by the thought of finding caches of gold coins or other
valuable objects on a sunken ship. One team of salvagers, for instance, searched the wreck of
the RMS Republic, which sank outside the Boston harbor in 1900. The search party, using
side-scan sonar, a device that projects sound waves across the ocean bottom and produces a

profile of the sea floor, located the wreck in just two and a half days. Before the use of this
new technology, such searches could take months or years. The team of divers searched the
wreck for two months, finding silver tea services, crystal dinnerware, and thousands of bottles
of wine, but they did not find the five and a half tons of American Gold Eagle coins they were
searching for.

Preservationists focus on the historic value of a ship. They say that even if a shipwreck's

treasure does not have a high monetary value, it can be an invaluable source of historic
artifacts that are preserved in nearly mint condition. But once a salvage team has scoured a
site, much of the archaeological value is lost. Maritime archaeologists who are
preservationists worry that the success of salvagers will attract more treasure-hunting
expeditions and thus threaten remaining undiscovered wrecks. Preservationists are lobbying
their state lawmakers to legally restrict underwater searches and unregulated salvages. To
counter their efforts, treasure hunters argue that without the lure of gold and million-dollar
treasures, the wrecks and their historical artifacts would never be recovered at all.

Question 31: What is the main idea of this passage?

A. Searching for wrecks is much easier with new technologies like side-scan sonar.

Lighthouses are towers with strong lights that help mariners plot their position, inform them

that land is near, and warn them of dangerous rocks and reefs . They are placed at prominent

points on the coast and on islands, reefs, and sandbars.

Every lighthouse has a distinctive pattern of light known as its characteristic . There are
five basic characteristics: fixed, flashing, occulting, group flashing, and group occulting. A
fixed signal is a steady beam. A flashing signal has periods of darkness longer than periods of
light, while an occulting signal’s periods of light are longer. A group- flashing light gives off
two or more flashes at regular intervals, and a group – occulting signal consists of a fixed light
with two or more periods of darkness at regular intervals . Some lighthouses use lights of
different colours as well, and today, most lighthouses are also equipped with radio beacons .
The three types of apparatus used to produce the signals are the catoptric, in which metal is
used to reflect the light; the dioptric, in which glass is used ; and the catadioptric, in which
both glass and metal are used.

be confused in daylight, they can be distinguished by day- marker patterns – designed of
checks and stripes painted in vivid colors on lighthouse walls.

In the past, the job of lighthouse keeper was lonely and difficult, If somewhat romantic.
Lighthouse keepers put in hours of tedious work maintaining the lights. Today, lighthouses
are almost entirely automated with humans supplying only occasional maintenance. Because
of improvements in navigational technology, the importance of lighthouses has diminished.
There are only about 340 functioning lighthouses in existence in the United States today,
compared to about 1,500 in 1900, and there are only about 1,400 functioning lighthouses
outside the United States. Some decommissioned lighthouses have been preserved as
historical monument.
