A. Read the passage and then choose the best answer (1,25 p)

The Royal National Park is a national park in New South Wales, Australia. It is located 29 km
south of Sydney. Founded in 1879 by Sir John Robertson, it is the world's second oldest purposed
National Park, the first usage of the term "National Park" after Yellowstone in the United States, Its
original name was The National Park, but it was renamed in 1955 after a visit by Queen Elizabeth
II. There was once a railway line connected the Park to the City Rail but this has now closed. There
are numerous walking trails and picnic sites throughout Life park. There is a car park just within the
Park to leave vehicles. One popular walk is the coast walk. There were big fires in 1994 that burnt
large parts of the park. Now these areas are being rehabilitated. Audile is a large, flat area in one of
the larger valleys in the park. A timber dance hail built in the early 20th century is available for
tourists. Large picnic areas, grassy meadows, and cafeterias make the picnic more in Eagle Rock –
a unique rock formation, About half way down the length of the park on the coast; It is a large rock
that look like an eagle's head when viewed from the side. The other remarkable feature is the
several waterfalls which tumble over the cliffs and into the sea over one hundred metres below.
Wattamolla is one of the most popular coastal beaches in the park. Substantial parking and a
canteen serving refreshments on summer weekends are also there. The park service is also very
careful to protect these areas due to their general rarity in the hot, arid Australian landscape.

I. Reading:

A. Read the passage and then choose the best answer (1,25 p)

In addition to whaling, whales are endangered by increasing ocean pollution. This is

particularly true of dolphins and other species that live in coastal waters. These animals eat
contaminated fish and other food, and their body tissues build up large concentrations of toxic
chemicals such as lead, mercury ,and pesticides.

Underwater noise pollution from ship motors, oil drilling and production,, and the
operation of undersea machinery may also threaten whales. This noise pollution is increasing, as is
the use of loud sounds to develop sonar images. Geologists use sonar to study the structure of ocean
water masses, the seafloor, and underlying rock. Fishermen and scientists use sonar to survey fish
populations. Navy ships use sonar to probe for submarines and in warfare activities. Scientists
believe that the intensity of noise levels in some ocean areas may interfere with the transmission of
whale calls or the whales’ ability to locate food. In particularly noise areas, noise pollution may
severely disorient whales, causing them to strand themselves on shore in a behaviour known as
beaching.

Interactions of whales in the wild with humans have also negatively affected whale
populations. Whale- watching expeditions are a popular boating activity. Occationally boaters
cruise too close to whales, preventing them from hunting for food or unintentionally seperating
mothers from their calves.
