UNIT 1 MY HOBBIES

Lesson 2 A CLOSER LOOK 1

A. THE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, ss will be able to:

- Use the lexical items related to the topic "Hobbies";

- Pronounce correctly the sounds /ə/ and /ɜ:/ in isolation and in context;

- Use the present simple, the future simple and verbs of liking + V_ing correctly and
appropriately.

B. CONTENT: Vocabulary: hobbies: collecting dolls/ glass bottles, mountain climbing, taking
photos, doing gymnastics, etc

Grammar: The present simple tense; The future simple and Verbs of liking + V_ing.

Pronunciation: sounds /ə/ and /ɜ:/

C. MATERIALS: course book, CD, CD player

Work arrangements: Individuals, pairs, groups, T-WC

Anticipated problems: some difficult collocations: do the gardening, take photos, do gymnastics;
long sound and short sound /ə/ and /ɜ:/

Elicit the questions:

What do you like doing for pleasure in your 
free time? Do you have a hobby? What’s it?
Is it difficult? Is it expensive?

Students work in pair to ask and answer the
questions.

Call some pairs to the board and act out the
conversation.

My hobby

A: Hi, Lan. Do you have a hobby?
B: Yes, of course.

A: What is it?

B: I enjoy collecting stamps.
A: Really? That’s interesting. Is it
expensive?

B: Not at all, I just keep the stamps from my
letters, …

1. Matching:

Have students read the action verbs in
column A and match them with the suitable
words/ phrases in column B.

Remind them that a verb can go with more
than one word/phrase.

Students work in pairs to compare their
answers before giving teacher the answers.

Check and confirm the correct answers.

3. Table completion

Ask students if they know what a key word
is. – A key word helps you understand a text
quickly, and it is usually a noun, a verb, an
adjective or an adverb.

Model the way to locate key words for
‘listening to music’.

Have students look at sentence 2 in activity

2 and read out the key words.

- In pairs students do the same.

Students can add more words to the table.
Call on some students from different pairs
to go to the board and write the words.

4. Game: The Keys to my Hobby!

Ask students to work in groups to play the
guessing game. One student is the group
leader who records other students’ points.
One student is the group secretary who
writes down other students’ hobbies.

When time is up, call on some group
secretaries to share the group’s hobbies.

The differences between the two sounds /ə/
and /ɜ:/

Have some students read out the words first.
Play the recording. Students listen and tick
the words they hear.

Play the recording again

Ask students to put the words in the correct
column while they listen.

Students compare their answers with the
whole class.

Students do this individually
Compare and check their answers
Say the word that has /ə / and / ɜ :/

3. Do you know what a key word is? Work
in pairs and write down key words to
describe the hobbies in the table below.
You can use the words in the sentences
from 2 to help you.
