<i><b>answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the following</b></i>
<i><b>questions.</b></i>

Aging is the process of growing old. It occurs eventually in every living
thing provided, of course, that an illness or accident does not kill it prematurely.
The most familiar outward signs of aging may be seen in old people, such as the
graying of the hair and the wrinkling of the skin. Signs of aging in a pet dog or
cat include loss of playfulness and energy, a decline in hearing and eyesight, or
even a slight graying of the coat. Plants age too, but the signs are much harder
to detect.

Most body parts grow bigger and stronger, and function more efficiently
during childhood. They reach their peak at the time of maturity, or early
adulthood. After that, they begin to decline. Bones, for example, gradually
become lighter and more brittle. In the aged, the joints between the bones also
become rigid and more inflexible. This can make moving very painful.

All the major organs of the body show signs of aging. The brain, for
example, works less efficiently, and even gets smaller in size. Thinking processes
of all sorts are slowed down. Old people often have trouble in remembering
recent events.

blood vessels that lead from the heart. They become thickened and constricted,
allowing less blood to flow to the rest of body. This condition accounts, directly
or indirectly, for many of the diseases of the aged. It may, for example, result in
heart attack.

<b>Aging is not a uniform process</b>. Different parts of the body wear out at
different rates. There are great differences among people in their rate of aging.
Even the cells of the body differ in the way they age. The majority of cells are

capable of reproducing themselves many times during the course of a lifetime.
Nerve cells and muscle fibers can never be replaced once they wear out.

Gerontologists - scientists who study the process of aging - believe this
wearing out of the body is controlled by a built-in biological time-clock. They are
trying to discover how this clock works so that they can slow down the process.
This could give man a longer life and a great number of productive years.

<b>Question 5. </b> What is the main idea of the first paragraph?

<b>A.</b> Aging occurs in every living thing after it has reached maturity.
<b>B.</b> Signs of aging are easier to detect in animals than in plants.
<b>C.</b> Not all signs of aging are visible.

<b>D.</b> The outward signs of aging may be seen in old people.

<b>Question 6. </b> Which piece of information is given in the passage?
<b>A.</b> Gerontologists can give man a longer life.

<b>B.</b> Gerontologists have discovered that aging is controlled by a built-in
biological time clock.

<b>C.</b> Gerontologists can prevent diseases connected with aging.

<b>D.</b> Gerontologists are studying how they can slow down the process of aging.
<b>Question 7. </b> The human body begins to lose vigor and the ability to function

<b>Question 8. </b> In old age, the bones _______________.

<b>A.</b> cause much pain <b>B.</b> become more flexible

<b>Question 9. </b> According to the passage, what condition is responsible for many
of the diseases of the old?

<b>A.</b> Their trouble in remembering recent events.
<b>B.</b> The rigid and inflexible joints between the bones.

<b>C.</b> The blood vessels that have become thickened and constricted.
<b>D.</b> The worn-out nerve cells and muscle fibers.

<i><b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your</b></i>
<i><b>answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the following</b></i>

<i><b>questions.</b></i>

People generally have one of two responses to snakes: either they find
them totally repulsive, or they are attracted to these smooth, silent, fast-moving
creatures. Certain species of snake are poisonous and harmful to humans, but
there are many which are non-venomous and can easily be kept at home.

Snakes differ from other reptiles, such as lizards and alligators. Their
well-developed system of muscles enables them to move with amazing speed and
agility, even though they have no legs.

They have no ears and do not hear sounds, but they are able to sense
ground vibrations. Snakes have limited vision, but they compensate for this with
an excellent sense of smell. Their forked tongues pick up tiny molecules in the
air and these are then deposited and identified in a special structure in the
mouth, known as "Jacobson's organ."

Strange as it may seem, some people keep snakes as pets. Raising a snake
has a number of advantages. Snakes require no special attention, and they don't
need to be walked. They are normally quiet and remain confined to their cages.
Most adult snakes must be fed every 7-10 days. Snakes swallow their prey
whole, thanks to a uniquely-formed joint in their jaw which enables them to open
their mouths amazingly wide. They digest their food slowly and need to be in a
state of rest during this period.

Studying snakes, or better still, keeping one at home, is an ideal way to
overcome the primitive fears that prevent many people from appreciating these
fascinating animals.

number of societies including the Inuit people of Greenland and North America.
Whaling became big business from the seventeenth century as the demand for
