ABSTRACT

This thesis is concerned with the incorporation of English cultural elements into
English training with the Comparing - Contrasting approach at Haiphong Community
College. More specifically, consideration is given to the why and the how of teaching
culture for Tourism students. It is proved that teaching a foreign language is not only
focusing on teaching syntactic structures or new vocabulary and expressions, but mainly
should incorporate some cultural elements, which are overlapped with language itself. The
author made an attempt to incorporate English culture elements into HCC classes by means
of considering some activities currently used in the light of communicative language
teaching. Effective communicative is more than a matter of language proficiency and, apart
from enhancing and enriching communicative competence, cultural competence can also
lead to empathy and respect toward different cultures.
