behavior is more a legacy from psychoanalytic theory, although therapeutic

Beck (1967) identifies a number of
illogical thinking processes
(i.e.
distortions of thought
processes
). These illogical thought patterns are self-defeating, and can cause great anxiety or
depression for the individual.
1.
Arbitrary interference
: Drawing conclusions on the basis of sufficient or irrelevant evidence.
2.
Selective abstraction
: Focusing on a single aspect of a situation and ignoring others.
3.
Magnification
: exaggerating the importance of undesirable events.
4.
Minimisation
: underplaying the significance of an event.
5.
Overgeneralization
: drawing broad negative conclusions on the basis of a single insignificant
event.

Cognitive therapy: foundations, conceptual models, applications and research
Paulo Knapp, Aaron T Beck,
Rev Bras Psiquiatr. 2008;30(Suppl II):S54-64.
- CT is not a set of techniques applied mechanically as we would think at a first glance.
The therapist’s competence in a full range of therapeutic skills is needed to ensure
efficacy to CT procedures.
- First and primarily, to fulfill the therapeutic endeavor, it is important to establish a
good working relationship with the patient, a therapeutic procedure called
collaborative empiricism. Patient and therapist work as a team of scientists in
evaluating the patient’s beliefs, testing them out to see whether they are accurate or
not, and modifying them according to reality.

Throughout the treatment, the

to treatment is used, with specific learning experiences designed to teach clients to:
1.
Monitor and identify automatic thoughts;
2.

Beck Depression Inventory
Aaron T Beck also created the Beck Depression Inventory.
The inventory is a simple questionnaire that individuals
can use to evaluate 21 different items that can lead to
depression. These items include things like guilt, work
difficulty, insomnia, change in body image, loss of libido,
pessimism, self-dislike, sense of failure, and mood.
A person goes through the questionnaire chooses how
they are feeling for each area and receives a score. You
are determining what range your answer is to the
question. Here is an example:
0 - I don't feel disappointed in myself
1 - I am disappointed in myself
2 - I am disgusted with myself
3 - I hate myself
Total
