The environment is everything around us, both natural and made by man. A major problem in the
world today is the destruction of the natural environment.

This is a complicated problem. We burn fuel, and this causes air pollution. We throw away
plastic bags, containing toys and other objects. These stay in the e nvironment, they are not like
paper or wood that slowly disappear. We made thousands of new chemicals. Factories that make
or use chemicals always have chemical wastes. These are often poisonous, and they also stay in
the environment.

Air pollution is by far the most harmful form of pollution in our environment. Air pollution is
caused by the exhaust fume emitted by cars, buses and trucks, trains, and factories. Even smoke
from burning leaves and cigarettes is harmful to the environment and causes a lot of damage to
man and the atmosphere. Evidence of increasing air pollution is seen in lung cancer, asthma ( hen 
suyễn), allergies (dị ứng), and various breathing problems. Even the birds have been affected, 
with severe air pollution preventing from reaching their seasonal metropolitan destinations of
centuries.

and pumpkin carving contests. Adults often have costume parties and give prizes for the best
costumes. In some places, both children and adults can take tours of haunted houses. In Canada
and the USA, children also carry small UNICEF boxes and together with their treats, they collect
money for this international children’s charity.

Pollution happens when chemicals that are harmful to living things get into the
environment. Chemicals that cause pollution are not easy to get rid of. They stay in the air,
ground and water for a long time. The best way to fight against pollution is to stop producing it in
the first place. Governments can pass laws that forbid or limit the use of chemicals that cause
pollution. Laws can stop factories from dumping poisonous chemicals in lakes, rivers, and the
oceans. Factories and power plants can clean up the smoke that they give off. Engineers can build
cars that burn less gasoline. They can find ways for cars to give off cleaner exhaust gazes.

Scientists are looking for fuels to replace coal and oil. They are looking for ways to use
the power in wind and in rays from the sun. They are looking for safe ways to get rid of nuclear
waste. We can help cut down on the amount of garbage we produce. We can recycle paper,
