Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, c, or D to indicate the correct

answer to each of the questions.

All over the country, young people are entering a world of homelessness and poverty,

according to a recent report by the housing group, Shelter.

Nearly 150,000 young people aged between sixteen and twenty-five will become

homeless this year, says Shelter. Some of the young homeless may sleep out in the open

in such places as the “cardboard city” in London, where people of all ages sleep in the

open air in their only homes – cardboard boxes. Others may find accommodation in

shelters run by

voluntary organisations or get a place in a hostel, which gives them board

up to ten weeks.

But who are these people? Those who are seeking a roof over their heads are mostly not

runaways but “throwaways” – people who have been thrown out of their homes 0r forced

to leave because of parental divorce, an unsympathetic step-parent or one of many other

reasons.

Take the case of one sixteen-year-old schoolgirl, Alice. She did not come from a poor

home and had just passed her exams with good results. The Shelter team met her in a

hostel where she was doing her physics homework. Her parents had thrown her out of her

home for no other reason that she wanted to do Science Advanced Level Exams – which

her parents refused her permission to do, saying that studying sciences was unladylike!

Shelter says that the government’s laws do nothing to help these youngsters. Rising rents,

the shortage of cheap housing and the cut in benefits for young people under the age of

twenty-five are causing a national problem, according to Shelter. The recent changes in

the benefit laws mean that someone aged between sixteen and twenty-five gets less than

older people and they can only claim State help if they prove that they left home for a

good reason.

Shelter believes that because of the major cuts in benefits to young people, more and

more are being forced to sleep on the streets. Shelter also points out that if you are

homeless, you can’t get a job because employers will not hire someone without a

permanent address; and if you can’t get a job, you are homeless because you don’t have

any money to pay for accommodation. It’s an impossible situation.

(Source: FCE success workbook)

Question 21. The word “Others” in paragraph 2 refers to _________.

A. People of all ages B. young people

Question 22. Most young people become homeless because _________ .

A. Circumstances make it impossible for them to live at home

B. They do not want to live with a divorced parent

C. They have run away from home

D. They have thrown away any chances of living at home by behaving badly

Question 23. Why was Alice turned out of her home?

A. Her parents didn’t agree with what she wanted to do.

The postponed Tokyo Olympic Games will go ahead next year "with or without Covid", the
vice-president of the International Olympic Committee says. John Coates confirmed to news agency AFP that
the Olympics would start on 23 July next year, calling them the "Games that conquered Covid".

They were originally scheduled to start in July 2020, but were postponed due to Covid-19 fears.
The IOC had earlier said they would not delay the Games beyond 2021.

"The Games were going to be their theme, the Reconstruction Games after the devastation of the
tsunami," Mr Coates told AFP, referring to 2011 catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

"Now very much these will be the Games that conquered Covid, the light at the end of the tunnel."
Tokyo 2020 chief executive Toshiro Muto said it was possible that the Games be held to a "limited"
audience, but said they wanted to avoid the possibility of having no spectators at all. Instead, he added that

the Games could potentially "simplify" its opening and closing ceremonies, as well as reduce the number
of staff and delegations from each country.

16. Who is John Coates?

Thanksgiving is associated with the time when Europeans first came to North America. In 1620 the ship the Mayflowers

foods were safe to eat, so that they could save food for the next winter. They held a big celebration to thank God and the Native
Americans for the fact that they had survived.

Shopping used to be my favourite activity. It started when I was a teenager and I worked in a

clothes shop. At that time I had a staff discount in the shop and I used to spend all my wages

buying clothes. When I got a job in an office I carried on spending all my spare money buying

clothes – even after I had got married, bought a house and had children!

I used to go shopping every weekend and I probably spent about £500 a month buying

clothes. It wasn’t something I only did when I wasn’t very happy, I always went shopping however

I felt. Sometimes I’d look for ages to find what I wanted. Other times, I’d just buy the first thing I

saw.

Most of the things I didn’t need. One day I bought three pairs of boots, even though I already

had another ten pairs at home. I never even took the most expensive pair out of the box!

I realised I had a problem when one day my five-year-old daughter looked into my wardrobe

and asked me why I had so many handbags. I counted them. I had seventy-five handbags and they

must have cost me thousands of pounds. I couldn’t believe what I’d done!

First of all, I threw away my credit card. Then I gave away all the clothes that I’d never worn.

After that I made arrangements every Saturday to visit friends or go on a day trip, so I wouldn’t be

able to go shopping. Now I’m happy because I’m not a shopaholic any more.

Question 21. The word “a shopaholic” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to _____ .

Completing a marathon is considered very difficult, but many coaches believe that it is possible for anyone who
is willing to put in the time and effort. Obviously, most participants don't run a marathon to win. Being more important
for most runners is their personal finish time and their placement within their specific age group and gender. Another
very important goal is to break certain time barriers. For example, ambitious recreational first-timers often try to run the
marathon under 4 hours, more competitive runners will attempt to run under 3 hours. Many runners prefer to finish for
example in 3:29:59, which makes them "sub-3:30h marathoners", instead of 3:30:01.

For most runners, the marathon is the longest run they have ever attempted. Many coaches believe that the most
important element in marathon training is the long run. Recreational runners commonly try to reach a maximum of
about 20 miles in their longest weekly run and about 40 miles a week in total when training for the marathon. More
experienced marathoners may run a longer distance. During marathon training, adequate recovery time is crucial. If pain
is felt, it is recommended to take a break for a couple of days or more to let the body heal. Overtraining is a condition
that results from not getting enough rest to allow the body to recover from difficult training. It can actually result in a
lower endurance and speed and place a runner at a greater risk of injury.
