 GHI NHỚ:
• Các phụ âm không đề cập đến ở phần dưới thì thông thường có ký hiệu phiên âm quốc tế
giống như ký tự trong chữ viết.
• Các nguyên âm, phụ âm về đa số, sẽ được ký hiệu phiên âm quốc tế như được ghi đầu tiên ở
phần I dưới đây.
• Hãy để ý kỹ đến các lưu ý và các ngoại lệ trong mỗi phần được đề cập đến.
PHẦN I: CÁCH PHÁT ÂM CỦA MỘT SỐ NGUYÊN ÂM VÀ PHỤ ÂM:
1) au phát âm là / ɔ: / như: automobile, automatic, auditory, audio, authority, author, authorize,
autograph, autumn, autopsy, autonomous, auxillary, autocross, automotive, autocracy, …
2) ee, ea, ei, ie phát âm / i: / như: meeting, greeting, kneel, feet, feed, cheeks, meat, feast, eat, cheat,
teach, neat, breathe, ceiling, perceive, receive, achieve, relieve, believe, ……
Ngoại trừ: 1) head, bread, breath, health, wealth, breasts thì ea / e /

5) our phát âm là / auə / như: our, hour, flour, sour, …
Ngoại trừ: pour, four, fourteen, adour, course: our / ɔ: /
6) ore phát âm là / ɔ:/ như: sore, more, shore, store, forever, tore, score, therefore, before, ….
7) ay, a phát âm là / ei / như: day, May, hay, stay, X-ray, state, fate, date,radio, yesterday….
8) ar phát âm là / a: / như: car, Mars, stars, far, card, March, ….
Ngoại trừ: chữ có tận cùng là: -liar, -lar thì ar / ” / như: particular, familiar, similar, …
9) ch, tch phát âm là / t∫/ như: chance, cheat, chase, march, watch, scratch,…………
Ngoại trừ: chemistry, chemist, school, scholarship, …thì: ch : / k /
machine, machinery, chef, parachute, champagne, brochure, ... thì ch : / ∫/
10) sh phát âm là / ∫ / như: wash, cash, shed, shoot, shut, shrimp, shall, shell, sheet, … với các chữ sure
và surgar
11) ng, nx phát âm là / ŋ / như: bang, strength, strong, string, sting, .......
12) nk , ndk, nc phát âm là / ŋk / như: bank, think, mink, pink, link., sink, handkerchief, function....
13) g phát âm là / g / như: gate, goat, give, get, forget, good, gain, again, ghost .....
14) ge, gi, j , gy phát âm là / dჳ / như: gene, generator, generous, general, engage, advantage,storage,
engineer, just, justice, juice, Egypt, gymnastics.....
15) age phát âm là / eidჳ/ như: age, stage, cage, teenage, engage, outrage ...

Ngoại trừ:  put, flu, flute, pollute,... thì u phát âm là / u /

34) Cách phát âm chữ S :
Đại đa số s phát âm là / s /: khi s nằm ở đầu, giữa hoặc cuối tư, trong –use, -ics, -sis, sau hai nguyên âm
cuối từ hoặc sau –o cuối từ như: saint, six, seven, physics, upset, use, useful, house, chouse, mouse,
louse, bamboos, tatoos, employees, refugees, referees, potatos, chaos, chaparajos [,t∫ỉp” 'rỉ:hous] ...
Chữ s phát âm là / z / khi: s nằm ở giữa hai nguyên âm hoặc giữa một nguyên âm với -y như: base,
chase, case, raise, phrase, purchase, choose, close, organisation, busy, easy, loosy, greasy, .......
Lưu ý: sure và sugar thì s phát âm là / ∫ /
35) ci phát âm là / ∫ / như gracious, suspicious, racial, official, optician, musician, mathematician,
efficient, sufficient,...

Như vậy, ci phát âm là / ∫ / trong các chữ có tận cùng là: -cial, -cian, -cient, -cious.
36) f, ff, fe, gh, ph phát âm là / f / như: fan, fence, life, wife, cliff, laugh, cough, rough, tough,
paragraph, cinematographer, geography, orphanage, infant, draught,...
Lưu ý: gh không được phát âm trong các chữ sau: high, plough, brought, through,
though, although, thigh, right, might, bought, taught, naughty, drought, caught, fought, sought, thought,
nought.
37) th phát âm là / / như: thing, think, thumb, thump, thunder, three, South, North, mouth, thousand,
breath, ....
Lưu ý: th, -the được phát âm / ð / như: with, without, Northern, Southern, Notherly,
Southerly, breathe, bathe then, thee, there, these, those, this, that, they, them, within, mother, father,
brother, feather, leather, though, although, the, their, bathe, breathe, clothes, clothing, thine,
thorough,....

38) ir, ur, -er-, -or- được phát âm / ə / như: irregular, irrigate, purchase, purpose, purse, term, germ,
generation, work,.......
Lưu ý:  souvenir thì ir phát âm là / iə /
 clerk thì er phát âm là / a:/
39) -er, -or, -ar nằm ở vị trí cuối từ thì được phát âm / ə / như: teacher, farmer, tamer, doctor, visitor,
editor, popular, familiar, liar, ...
40) -ar- nằm ở vị trí đầu hoặc giữa từ thì được phát âm / a: / như: army, arm, arithmatic, farmer,
harmful, charming, alarm, .......
41) –ire được phát âm / ai / như: fire, hire, tire, admire, wire, empire, ......
42) –o được phát âm / ɔ / như: hot, cost, lost, on, lot, spot, pot, boss, not, knot, shot, hon, honor, honest,
donkey, don, doll, dollar, dog,....
–o còn được phát âm / əu / như: go, no, so, most, old, cold, coco-nut, home, hope,...
–o còn được phát âm / ∧/ như: cover, none, done, gone, monkey, money, come, other, mother,
brother,.....
–o còn được phát âm / ə / như: complaint, comb, common, compare, complex,...

–o còn được phát âm / i / như: women
PHẦN II: CÁC ÂM CÂM ( CÁC KÝ TỰ KHÔNG ĐƯỢC PHÁT ÂM )
Các chữ b, c, d, e, g, gh, h, k, l,n, p, r, u , w không được phát âm khi:
 Ký tự cuối cùng là –mb như: comb, climb, bomb, tomb.... và b trước t ( –bt ) như: debt, doubt,
subtle, lumber, plumber, ...
Ngoại trừ: timber thì b phát âm là / b /
 Chữ c câm khi nằm sau s và trước e, i, y hoặc trong chữ czar, czarism và chữ victuals như: scene,
science, scientist, scissors, scythe, miscelancous, muscle,.....
 Chữ d câm trong chữ handsome, sandwich.
 Chữ e câm khi nó nằm cuối từ hoặc sau c, sau g như: love, life, five, fine, time, mine, fence, stage,
courage, encourage, courageous,...
 Chữ g câm khi nó nằm trước n như: gnaw, gnarled, sign, reign, foreign, campaign, champaigne,
gnome,...
Ngoại trừ: signal, signature
 Chữ gh không được phát âm khi trong các chữ có tận cùng là –ght và các chữ sau: right, might,
bought, taught, naughty, drought, caught, fought, sought, thought, nought, high, plough, brought,
through, though, although, thigh,
 Chữ h không được phát âm trong các chữ:
hon, honour, honest, honesty, hour, vehicle, ghost, exhaust.....
bắt đầu là rh- như: rhetoric(al), rhino(ceros), rhizome, rhomboid, rhubard, rhapsody, rheumatic,
rhythm(ic), rhyme, rhombus.
 Chữ k câm khi ký tự đầu là kn– như: know, knew, known, kneel, knowledge, knitting, knit,
knot, ...
 Chữ l câm khi trong các chữ như: could, should, talk, folks, calf, .....
 Chữ n câm khi nó nằm cuối v sau m như: autumn, column, condemn, hymn, damn, solemn, .....
 Chữ p câm khi nó nằm đầu chữ và trước n, s, t như: psalm, psalter, psychology, psylla, pneuma,
pneumatocyst, pneumonia, pteridium, ptosis, pterygote, pterosaur, pterins,pteridophyte,
pterylae, ptisan, ptochocracy, .... và trong chữ receipt.
 Chữ r câm khi trong chữ iron, ironing, irk, và trước –s, –t như: first, thirsty, thirty, thirteen, shirt,
skirt,....

 Chữ u câm khi trong các chữ buy, buoy, build, built, và khi nó đứng sau g, q như: guess, guest,
quest, question, guitar, catalogue, language, linguistics, tongue, oblique, unique, Romanesque,
picturesque, quote,........
 Chữ w câm khi trong các chữ bắt đầu bằng wr- như: wrack,wrangle, wrap, wrath, wreak, wreath,
wreathe,wreck, wreckage, wren, wrench, wrest, wrestle, wrestling, wretch, wriggle,wring,
wrinkle,wrinkly, wrist, write, writhe, wrong, wrought, wrung, wrang, wry,và các chữ who,
whom, whose, whole, wholly,two, who, whom, whose, whole
