Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet indicate
the correct answer to each of the following questions from 1 to 5
If parents bring up a child with the aim of turning the child into a genius, they will cause great

damage to him. According to several leading educational psychologists, this is one of the biggest
mistakes which some parents make. Generally, the child will understand very well what the
parents expect, and will fail. Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage to the
children.
However, if parents are not unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are
hopeful in a sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well especially if the parents are
very supportive of their children.
Michael Smiths is very lucky. He is very fond of music, and his parents help him a lot by
taking him to concerts and arranging private piano and violin lessons. Although Michael's father
plays the trumpet in a large orchestra, he never makes Michael enter music competitions if the is
unwilling.
Michael's friend, Winston Maier, however, is not so lucky. As both his parents are successful
musicians, they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful as
they are, and so they enter him in every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he
does not win. "When I was at your age, I used to win every competition I entered," Winston's
father tells him. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always
seems quiet and unhappy.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet indicate
the correct answer to each of the following questions from 6 to 10
WEDDING CUSTOMS
In many countries, it is customary for the bride to wear a white dress as a symbol of purity. In
traditional Japanese wedding ceremonies, the bride wears a white kimono. The tradition of
wearing a special white dress only for the wedding ceremony started around 150 years ago.
Before that, most women could not afford to buy a dress that they would only wear once.
In different countries, colors other than white are worn by the bride or used as part of the
wedding ceremony. In certain Asian countries and in the Middle East, red and orange are
considered symbols of joy and happiness. In Chinese cultures, wedding invitations are usually red
and gold as these are colors symbolic of wealth and happiness. Wedding guests give gifts of
money to the newlyweds in small red envelopes. Not all cultures, though, consider money a
suitable gift. In many Western countries, especially the U.K, wedding guests give the bride and
groom household items that they may need for their new home.

In many cultures, couples exchange rings, usually made of gold or silver, during the marriage
ceremony. The circular shape of the ring is symbolic of the couple's eternal union. In Brazil, it is
traditional to have the rings engraved, with the bride's name on the groom's ring, and vice versa.
Many wedding customs that originated in one part of the world have been incorporated into
marriage ceremonies in other countries. Today, couples can choose from many of the world's traditional
customs to create their own special ceremony.

have fun and learn how to make good food.
Class member Bill, aged ten, says, 'I love my mum's cooking and now I can do it better than her.
The teachers make us laugh, especially when we sit down with them to share the food we've made.'
Flora is twelve, and she's having problems preparing onions. 'I love cooking. I did a meal for ten
friends which they really enjoyed. Then my mum suggested I take up a hobby, instead of doing
nothing at weekends. I was happy staying at home, so I wasn't too keen at first. I'm really glad I
decided to come, though.'
Their teacher, Philippe, says, "It's great fun. Children pay attention and remember things better
than adults, although the kitchen isn't always as tidy when they're cooking! As adults, we're always

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions.
Improving girls’ educational levels has been demonstrated to have clear impacts on the
health and economic future of young women, which in turn improves the prospects to their entire
community. The infant mortality rate of babies whose mothers have received primary education is
half that of children whose mothers are illiterate. In the poorest countries of the world, 50% of girls
do not attend secondary school. Yet, reseach shows that every extra year of school for girls
increases their lifetime income by 15%. Improving female education, and thus the earning potential
of women, improves the standard of living for their own children, as women invest more of their
income in their families than men do. Yet, manybarriers to education for girls remain. In some
African countries, such as Burkina Faso, girls are unlikely to attend school for such basic reasons as
a lack of private toilet facilities for girls.
Higher attendance rates of high schools and university education among women,
particularly in developing countries, have helped them make inroads into professional careers with
better – paying salaries and wages. Education increases a woman’s (and her partner and the
family’s) level of health and health awareness. Furthering women’s levels of education and
advanced training also tends to lead to later ages of initiation of sexual activity, later age at first
marriage, and later age at first childbirth, as well as an increased likelihood to remain single, have
no children, or have no formal marriage and alternatively, have increasing leavels of long- term
partnerships. It can lead to higher rates of barrier and chemical contraceptive use (and a lower level
of sexually transmitted infections among women and their partners and children), and can increase
the level of resources available to women who divorce or are in a situation of domestic violence. It
has been shown, in addition, to increase women’s communication with their partners and their
employers, and to improve rates of civic participation such as voting or the holding of office.
Câu 36. It is started in the first paragraph that ……………….. .
A. women’s educational levels have influence on the prospect of their community
B. women who have little schooling often have no idea of raising their children

C. it is the children’s schooling that helps their mothers increase their lifetime income
D. earning their own living, women take the responsibilty of running the household
Câu 37. It is implied in the first paragraph that …………….. .
A. the husband in a family takes little responsibility in rearing the children
B. the mother in a family makes every effort to raise the children effectively
C. the children’s standard of living largely depends on their mother’s income
D. there are numerous reasons for women not to come to class worldwide
Câu 38. The word “barriers” in the passage is closest in meaning to …………… .

In the past, both men and women were expected to be married at quite young ages.
Marriages were generally arranged by parents and family, with their children having little chance
to say no in the matter. In the past it was not surprising to find that a bride and groom had only
just met on the day of their engagement or marriage.
In modern Vietnam, this has changed completely as people choose their own marriagepartners based on love, and in consideration primarily to their own needs and wants. Moreover

early marriage is quite illegal.
The traditional Vietnamese wedding is one of the most important of traditional
Vietnamese occasions. Regardless of westernization, many of the age-old customs practiced in a
traditional Vietnamese wedding continue to be celebrated by both Vietnamese in Vietnam and
overseas, often combining both western and eastern elements. Besides the wedding ceremony,
there is also an engagement ceremony which takes place usually half a year or so before the
wedding. Due to the spiritual nature of the occasion, the date and time of the marriage ceremony
are decided in advance by a fortune teller. The traditional Vietnamese wedding consists of an
extensive array of ceremonies: the first is the ceremony to ask permission to receive the bride,
the second is the procession to receive the bride (along with the ancestor ceremony at her house),
the third is to bring the bride to the groom's house for another ancestor ceremony and to welcome
her into the family, then the last is a wedding banquet. The number of guests in attendance at
these banquets is huge, usually in the hundreds. Several special dishes are served. Guests are
