I. Reported speech with infinitive(s):
1. Reported requests and orders


* to tell/ask someone to do something


- “Listen to me.”, my teacher said. => My teacher told me to listen to her.
- “Shut the door.” She said . => She asked me to shut the door.


* to tell/ask someone not to do something


- “Don’t talk in class.” => My teacher asked me not to talk in class.
2. Reported offers and suggestions


* offer, promise, refuse, agree, threaten, hope, wish,…. => S +reported verb+ to –inf
- “I will do my homework.” => She promised to do her homework.


* remind, warn, advise, invite, allow, ….. => S +reported verb+ object + to-inf
- “You should not drink too much beer.” => He advised me not to drink too much beer.
II.Reported speech with Gerund


We use reported speech with Gerund in order to report feelings or suggestions.


suggest , admit , deny, insist on , think of, dream of, look forward to , apologize (sb) for…
accuse sb of , thank sb for , congratulate sb on ,prevent sb from, warn sb against…


Ex:


- “It was nice of you to help me. Thank you very much,” Tom said to you.
=> Tom thanked me for helping him.


- “I’m sorry I didn’t phone you earlier,” Mary said.


=> Mary apologized for not phoning me earlier.


- “Stay here! I can’t let you go out tonight” her mother said to Jane
=> Her mother prevented Jane from going out that night.
