I. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:
• Write a complaint letter
II. Content:
• Vocabulary: resolution , float , prohibit ,complain , complaint
• Grammar: Review.
III. Method
• Individually.
• Ask – answer.
• Pair works.
• Teamwork.
IV. Teaching aids:
• Pictures and posters.
• Real objects.
• Books and notebooks.
V. Procedure:
1. Warm up (7 minutes)

- Have Ss write in two groups
- Check and give feedback

- Write the parts of the letter in groups

2. Pre- writing (12 minutes)
1. Have you ever written to anyone?
2. What kind of the letter – friendly or complaint letter?
- Today we learn how to write a complaint letter?
- Teach some new words and have Ss guess and give the
meaning of these words
- Answer teacher’s questions.
- Listen and answer the questions.
I. Read
1. New words:
+ Resolution : sự quyết tâm (translation)
+ Float : trôi , nổi bồng bềnh
+ Prohibit : ngăn cản , ngăn cấm
+ Complain : phàn nàn
- Guess and give the meaning of new words.

- Model, repeat, and read before class.
- Call some Ss to check their pronunciation.
- Teacher uses technique “slap the board” to check new
words.
- Introduce the five parts of the complaint letter and have Ss
discuss to match sections with the definitions.
(Ss match with closed book)

- Have Ss give feedback on the board (two groups)
- Check and give the key
- Set a scene: Mr. Nhat wrote a letter to the direction of L &
P company in HCM city ….
- Have Ss read the letter and label each section with the
appropriate letter.
Dear Sir / Madam,
I would suggest that your company should tell your drivers
to clear up all the trash on the ground before leaving.
I am writing to you about the short stop of your trucks
around my house on their way to the north.
I look forward to hearing form you and seeing good response
from your company.
When the trucks of your company have a short break on the
streets around my house, the drivers have left lots of garbage
on the ground after their refreshment. When the trucks leave
the place, the ground id covered with trash and a few
minutes later there is smell and flies.

2. Matching :
A complaint letter has five sections
1. Situation
2. Complication

3. Resolution
4. Action
5. Politeness
a. ends the letter politely
b. states the reason for writing
c. makes a suggestion
d. mentions the problem
e. talks about the future action.
3. Rewrite the letter.
- Discuss in group to match sections with the definitions.
(with close book)
1- b , 2-d , 3-c ,4-e ,5- a
- Check whole class
- Listen to teacher’s leading
- Read the letter then label each section with the appropriate
letter in pair.
- Write on the board

Dear Sir / Madam,
R - I would suggest that your company should tell your
drivers to clear up all the trash on the ground before leaving.

3. While – writing (16 minutes)

- Ask Ss to read the situation in part “b” in page 53.
- Ask Ss some questions about this situation
(Ss answer the questions from the situation)
- Ask Ss to write the letter individually.
- Ask Ss to share with their partners and correct.
- Hand in some students’ writing and correct before class.
- Give suggested writing and have Ss read.
II. Write
1. What do people do in the lake behind your house these
days?
2. What make you worried?
3. To whom do you write the letter to?
4. What suggestion do you want to make?
5. Any future plans do you want to make?
b) Now write a letter to the head of the local authorities to
complain about the way of catching fish in the lake behind
your house. Following SCRAP format.
Begin with :
Dear Mr. President ,
I am writing to you about the problem of fish catching in
the lake behind my house.
4. Post – writing (7 minutes)

- Call on some students to read aloud the letters.
- Give feedback, correct some letters.
* Sample :
Dear Mr. President ,
I am writing to you about the problem of fish catching in
the lake behind my house.
I am very worried because they use electricity to catch fish.
After a short time, they leave the lake; a lot of small fish died
and float on the water surface.
I would suggest the local authorities should prohibit and
fine heavily anyone using this way of catching fish. I look
forward to hearing from you and seeing the protection of
environment from the local authorities.

5. Homework (3 minutes)
• Rewrite the letter in the notebook.
• Prepare for Unit 6 – Lesson 6: Language focuses 2, 4, and 5.

• Use adjectives and adverbs to make sentences with conditional sentence type 1 and to make
sentences with because / as / since.
II. Content:
• Vocabulary: careless, cut down, exhaust fume, dynamite, …….
• Grammar: conditional sentences, adverb clause of reason ………..

III. Method
• Individually.
• Ask – answer.
• Explanation
• Pair works.
• Teamwork.
IV. Teaching aids:

V. Procedure:
1. Warm up (7 minutes)

- Give the game of “Find someone who”: Give the members
in each team the half sentences. One S student in team A
read their sentence and the student in team B has the half
other sentence is read their sentence if it is suitable.
1. If the weather is hot today,

5. If you play soccer on the street,
a. she will watch TV.
b. you will be fined heavily.

- Play the game in two teams.
2. Conditional sentences: type 1 (18 minutes)
- Ask Ss to look at the sentences on the poster and tell what
structure are they?
- Ask Ss to look at the exercise 4 (56) and match the half
sentences in A with the suitable ones in B.
- Call some Ss to read their answers.
- Check the answers and give feedback.
I. Conditional sentences type 1.
- Look at the poster and answer Teacher’s question.
+ There are two clauses: if – clause and main clause.
+ There is a comma between two clauses if “if – clause is in
the front position. Two clauses can be changed position.
+ Form:
If – clause Main clause
S + V (HTDG) S + will + V
- Look at the book and work in pairs.

- Some Ss read their answers.
Column A:
1. If we pollute the water,
2. If you cut down the trees in the forest,
3. If there is two much exhaust fume in the air,
4. If you can keep your neighborhood clean,
5. If people stop using dynamite for fishing,
Column B:
a) there will be big floods every year.
b) a lot of sea creatures will be well preserved.
c) more and more people will cope with respiratory

problems.
d) you will have an ideal place to live.
e) we will have no fresh water to use.
- Call some Ss to read the completed sentences loudly.
- Ask Ss to read the sentence a) in exercise 5 (56).
a) If the rice paddies are polluted, ………. (rice plants / die)
If the rice paddies are polluted, the rice plants will die. 
- Ask Ss to work in 4 groups to do the exercise.
- Give the feedback.
b) If we go on littering, ………… (environment / become /
seriously pollutes)
c) If we plant more trees along the streets, ……….. (we /
have / more shade and fresh air)
d) If we use much pesticide on vegetables, …………. (the
1 – e: If we pollute the water, we will have no fresh water to
use.

more people will cope with respiratory problems.

Exercise 5: Complete the sentences.
- Work in groups. G1, 3 : b, c.
G2, 4: d, e.
- Hang the posters and compare the answers.

3. Adverb clauses of reason (10 minutes)
- Show the picture of Ba to set the scene. Then have Ss
combine two sentences into one using “because”.
- Look at the picture.
- Read the completed sentence.
- Explain grammar in the sentence
- Have Ss do exercise.
- Ask Ss share with the partner
- Call some Ss write on the board their sentences.
- Correct if necessary.
- Listen and answer
- Remind the formation of the adverb and its usage
Ex: a. Ba is tired .
b. He stayed up late watching TV.
Ba is tired because he stayed up late watching TV.
Because / since / as => Bởi vì

- Take note carefully
Exercise 2: Join the pair of sentences together. Use
because/since / as.
- Complete the sentences individually
- Share with the partner
- Give the answer and check whole class
b) Ba has a broken leg because he fell over while he was
playing basketball.
c) Lan is going to be late for school since the bus is late.
d) Hoa broke the cup as she was careless.
e) Mai wants to go home because she feels sick.
f) Nga is hungry as she hasn’t eaten all day.
