The last two decades have seen enormous changes in the way people's lives are affected
by IT. Twenty years ago, few people had access to a computer while today most people use
them at work, home or school and use of e-mail and the Internet is an every day event.
These developments have brought many benefits to our lives. E-mail makes communication
much easier and more immediate. This has numerous benefits for business, commerce, and
education. The World Wide Web means that information on every conceivable subject is now
available to us. Clearly, for many people this has made life much easier and more convenient.
However, not all the effects of the new technology have been beneficial. Many people feel that
the widespread use of e-mail is destroying traditional forms of communication such as letter
writing, telephone and face-to-face conversation. In addition, the huge size of the Web means it
is almost impossible to control and regulate. This has led to many concerns regarding children
accessing unsuitable websites. In conclusion, developments in IT have brought many benefits,

negative effects that will need to be addressed very carefully.

Read the passage carefully and choose the correct answer.

In Southeast Asian, many forests have been cut down to produce timber and to clear land for
farms and industries. The destruction of forests has reduced the living space of wildlife. Much of
Asian’s wildlife is also threatened by over-hunting. Many people kill animals for food or hunt
them to sell to the zoo, medical research, and pet trader. Because of habitat destruction and
over-hunting, many large Asian animals, including elephants, rhinoceroses, and tigers, have
become endangered.

In China, people have cut down most of the forests for wood, which has caused serious soil
erosion. The soil is deposited in rivers and streams, which lowers the quality of the water. The
Huang He, or Yellow River, is so named because the light-coloured soil gives the water a
yellowish colour. The soil has also raised the riverbed. As a result, the Huang He often floods,
causing great property damage and loss of life along its banks.

As computers have become powerful tools for the rapid and economic production of
pictures, computer graphics has emerged as one of the most rapidly growing fields in computer
science. It is used routinely in such diverse areas as business, industry, art, government,

education, research, training, and medicine.

One of the initial uses of computer graphics, and ultimately its greatest use, has been as
an aid to design, generally to referred to as computer-aided design (CAD). One of its greatest
advantages is that designers can see how an object will look after construction and make

changes freely and much more quickly than with hand drafting. For three-dimensional rendering

of machine parts, engineers now rely heavily on CAD. Automobile, spacecraft, aerospace, and
ship designers use CAD techniques to design vehicles and test their performance. Building
designs are also created with computer graphics system. Architects can design a building
layout, create a three-dimensional model, and even go for a simulated ‘walk’ through the rooms
or around the outside of the building.

Business graphics is another rapidly growing area of computer graphics, where it is used
to create graphs, charts, and cost models to summarize financial, statistical, mathematical,
scientific, and economic data. As an educational aid, computer graphics can be used to create
weather maps and cartographic materials. Computer art also has creative and commercial art
applications, where it is used in advertising, publishing, and film productions, particularly for
computer animation, which is achieved by a sequential process.

32. What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. Routine uses of computers B. Computer graphic applications

While some are arguing that global warming is a completely natural process and that there's
nothing to worry about, most scientists agree that human actions are a major contributing factor.
With each passing year, the Earth's average surface temperature is increasing. This is mainly

due to the release of CO2 and other greenhouse gases caused by humans. The greatest
amount of greenhouse gas is produced by the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas
and human daily activities, including operating a motorbike that uses petroleum, cutting down
and burning trees, and manufacturing everything we need.

floods, land erosion, excessive snow or desertification!

While others are arguing about whether humans are the only ones causing global warming, we
should take action! Turn off electrical devices you're not using, walk or use your bike if your
journey is short, and save water when you take a bath or do the washing. We've all heard the
advice given by scientists and environmental groups, but these above are simple things that
you don't need to work for NASA or any environmental protection organisations to know what to
do.
