Air pollution can affect our health in many ways with both short-term and long-term effects.
Different groups of individuals are affected by air pollution in different ways. Some individuals are
much more sensitive to pollutants than are others. Young children and elderly people often suffer
more from the effects of air pollution. People with health problems such as asthma, heart and
lung disease may also suffer more when the air is polluted. The extent to which an individual is
harmed by air pollution usually depends on the total exposure to the damaging chemicals
Examples of short-term effects include irritation to the eyes, nose and throat, and upper
respiratory infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Other symptoms can include
headaches, nausea, and allergic reactions.

Long-term health effects can include chronic respiratory disease, lung cancer, heart disease, and
even damage to the brain, nerves, liver, or kidneys. Continual exposure to air pollution affects the

Global warming is the phenomenon that the average temperature of the earth raises continuously.
Its temperatures may rise by 1.4 to 5.8 degrees Celsius. The greenhouse gases such as carbon
dioxide or methane are the cause of the global warming. The greenhouse gases create a natural
greenhouse effect.

Human activities such as burning fuels, lumbering, and agriculture will release greenhouse gases.
Some of the non-human causes are volcanic emissions, solar activity, variations in the earth’s
orbit.

What are the effects of global warming? The rising temperature of the earth will cause the polar
ice to melt. As the ice melts, the water will cause the rising sea level and pattern of climate
changes. The extreme weather such as hurricanes, tornados, droughts, heat wave, and floods
occur more frequently. Other effects of global warming are lower agricultural productions, animal
extinctions, or reduced summer stream flows.

There are still many scientific uncertainties of causes and effects of global warming. Some
scientists argue that, “Even if there are no greenhouse gases, the events of rising sea and global
warming would continue. The carbon dioxide is known for its long average atmospheric lifetime”.

A good deal of fascinating research has been done about the reading patterns of young people,
and it is surprising to discover at what an early age children start expressing preferences for
particular kind of books. A recent report, which examined in detail the reading habits of
primary-school children showed that even seven-year-old boys and girls have clear views about what
they want to read. Girls, in general, read more, and far more girls than boys preferred reading
stories. Boys were showing a taste for the more instant appeal of picture stories, or else books
about their hobbies. These tastes continue unchanged until the children are teenagers.

Apparently girls read more in general, but more fiction in particular .You could say that there are
more opportunities for girls to read fiction: magazines encourage the fiction habit in girls in their
early teens, and by their late teens they have probably moved on to the adult women’s

magazines. Teenage boys tend to buy magazines about their hobbies: motorcycles, heavy
transport and to on.

Adult reading tastes are also the subject of research. Again the number of women who read for
pleasure is considerably higher than the number of men. It seems that the majority of women
still want love stories. There has also been some analysis of what men actually read.

Apparently only 38 percent of men read anything, but 50 percent of what they read is fiction in
the form of action-packed stories of space or gunmen.

Question 41: The recent research into children’s reading has shown that they _______.
A. begin to read very fast at an early age.

B. examine in detail what they read at school.
C. can read clearly in primary school.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 46 to 50.

Until recently, humankind seemed to view the ocean as a source of infinite resources. Its vast
size and depth and unexplored frontiers made the ocean appear invulnerable to

overexploitation. The truth is that the populations of many species are decreasing at an
unsustainable rate, and the number of species listed as endangered from marine life families
such as whales, dolphins, manatees and dugongs, salmon, seabirds, sea turtles, and sharks to
name a few, are on the rise. The threats to marine species are difficult to perceive because
marine animals are not as visible as animals on land. But unfortunately, marine creatures are
equally, if not more, vulnerable to problems such as habitat destruction and overexploitation.
Shallow water animals that breathe air, like turtles, manatees, dugongs, and whales are often
hit by boats and caught in fishing gear. Species such as turtles that lay their eggs on land often
lose their nurseries due to coastal development. Animals that have taken millions of years to
evolve, that are invaluable to all ecosystems, have and continue to vanish from places where
they once flourished.

Question 46: What is human’s perception of the ocean so far?
A. The ocean resources will never be exhausted.

B. The ocean is capable of resisting overexploitation.
C. Both A & B are correct.

D. Neither of A & B is correct.

THE SUCCESS OF J. K. ROWLING

There are few modern-day writers as renowned as Joanne Kathleen Rowling, the creator of
Harry Potter. With over 30 awards under her belt, she is one of the most successful authors of
all time. In addition, her novels have famously been adapted into a series of box-office hits.
These earn her so much income that the 47-year-old could comfortably retire, and live off Harry
Potter royalties for the rest of her life! However, this lucrative success story started at the most
humble of beginnings, with a talented but insecure writer too afraid to pursue her dreams.
Joanne grew up in a house full of books that fuelled her creativity. She was so enchanted by
fairy tales that she began to dream up her own, and by the time she was six years old she had
written her first story about a rabbit and a giant bee. “Ever since Rabbit and Miss Bee, I have
wanted to be a writer, though I rarely told anyone so,” recalls Joanne, “I was afraid they'd tell
me I didn’t have a hope."

books,” he warned Joanne. Well, she certainly proved him wrong! To date, she has sold 500

million copies of her novels globally, and the Harry Potter franchise has reaped profits of £15
billion! Now, as the richest author in the world, no publisher in their right mind would dream of
turning down one of her books! And as for Joanne’s confidence; well, let’s just say It’s been
