Louis Braille was born in France in 1809. His father was a shoemaker who made shoes and other things
from leather. When Louis was small, he liked to help his father make shoes. One day, when Louis was
cutting some leather, he suddenly slipped the knife which hit him in his eyes. He soon became completely
blind.


When he was ten, he went to study at the National Institute for the blind. One day, his class went to a


special exhibition where he first knew the code which was used to send the messages. Louis thought a lot
about the code. Then he decided to write other codes which the blind could " read" with their fingers. It was
very difficult to feel the differences between the letters in codes, so Louis used signals called six dots. He
rearranged the dots with each groups of dots matching with a letter in the Alphabets. And Louis invented
the Braille Alphabets which the blind can read and write easily.
