A Vintage Solution for Southcorp
Southcorp Limited and Rosemount Estates merged
to form the world's largest premium branded wine
company, Southcorp Wines.
The combination of Rosemount with Penfolds and
Lindemans brought together three of the world's
premier global wine brands, creating one of the
largest wine companies in the world with export
markets in 80 countries.
In its first year of operation, Southcorp Wines has
more than 7,500 hectares of vineyards under
production in the winemaking regions of the
Barossa and Clare Valleys in South Australia, the
Sunraysia region of Victoria and the Hunter,
Mudgee and Orange districts of New South Wales.
It delivers more than 10 million cases of premium
wines for estimated revenue of more than AUD$1.1
billion.
At the time of the merger, Rick Allert,
Southcorp's Chairman, said: "Rosemount is an
excellent strategic fit with Southcorp and also
delivers significant cost savings and synergies
through the consolidation of two businesses. In
particular, we anticipate benefits from the
combination of sales and distribution, product
efficiencies, improved purchasing power and
reduced administration costs."
To upgrade and future-proof the IT&T network
infrastructure of key winemaking, distribution and
production sites, Southcorp's Byron Moult-Smith,
Neil Martin and Graham Whitfield are working with
KRONE Premis

endorsed installer, Gary Tennant,
of Fibre and Data Networks (FDN).
"We are progressively installing KRONE Premis
NET
Cat 5e and KRONE fibre solutions," said Byron
Moult-Smith, Communications and Technology
Support for Southcorp's South Australian and
Victorian operations.
"We outsource the remote management of our
local area and wide area network infrastructure to
IBM GSA whose main data centre is in Tullamarine,
Victoria and they, in turn, work with various
Southcorp IT&T project managers such as Neil,
Graham and myself.
"I am based at Magill in South Australia which is
the network hub for the state's Nurioopta region
and our main distribution centre at Outer Harbour
in Adelaide."
Southcorp Wines' new International Distribution
Centre is located at OuterHarbour. The 30,000
square m site dovetails with the adjacent Mackenzie
transport Centre which handles Southcorp's
container packaging.
"As well as being integrated for the smooth and
climate-controlled transfer of wines in containers,
the communications network for the two centres is
also connected by a KRONE Premis
NET
structured
fibre optic system," said Mr Moult-Smith.

"We actually run two networks throughout the
Southcorp group - one for our information systems
such as financials and data and voice and the other,
which is site dependent, is a SCADA (Supervisory
Control and Data Acquisition) system for line
management of the winemaking”.
Southcorp Wines has 100 sites around the world
and they are connected in varying degrees to the
network. The number of people per site ranges
from one or two in a small vineyard to up to 450 at
Nurioopta in the Barossa.
"We use a Telstra OnRamp service for sites with 25
to 30 people on a local area network around a
dedicated local server," said Mr Moult-Smith. "The
major links for our accounting and warehouse
systems go back to IBM GSA's Tullamarine site.
"Most of our fibre communications networks are
local campus-style connections for sites that span
anything up to one kilometre in width, such as
Nurioopta and Karadoc."
Neil Martin, Communications Co-ordinator at
Nurioopta explains that the local area network for
which he is responsible has 12 network nodes using
KRONE equipment.
"Nurioopta is a 40-acre site in the Barossa Valley,"
said Mr Martin. "We serve as a crush and bottling
plant for our Southcorp vineyards of Kalimna,
Eden Vale, The Waltons and Seppeltsfield.
"Primarily, though, we are responsible for
premium and super premium Penfolds wine
production.
"KRONE is virtually the industry standard for
structured cabling solutions which is important to
us because our organisation is widespread," said
Mr Martin. "Some of our sites are in the middle of
nowhere but you can always count on one local
Telstra technician to have a KRONE tool in his back
pocket to provide support to the equipment.
KRONE is also a local manufacturer which is
important when it comes to surety of supply."
Graham Whitfield is located in the Sunraysia region
of Victoria at Karadoc near Mildura. As Electrical
Supervisor, he is responsible for the automation and
control of the Karadoc site.
"Karadoc was the old Lindeman's site," said
Mr Whitfield. "This year we'll be crushing
between 50,000 and 60,000 tonnes of
grapes and producing all the cask products
for the group as well as some bottled lines.
"We have 150 people using our network and
our staff numbers swell to 250 during the
vintage. We use a Telstra OnRamp service and
KRONE Premis
NET
Cat 5e as well as KRONE
fibre patch panels.
"Like Nurioopta, Karadoc also runs a SCADA
system through a fibre optic programmable logic
control (PLC) network.
"Our SCADA system controls tank temperature
monitoring, the blending process, bottling line
progress and various other winemaking processes,
feeding the production status back to the local
winemaker or engineer at a number of PCs
distributed across the site," said Mr Whitfield.
If you've enjoyed a wine from Rosemount, Penfolds,
Lindemans, Seaview, Coldstream Hills, Hungerford
Hill, Seven Peaks, Seppelt, Devil's Lair, Tollana,
Queen Adelaide, Leo Buring, Killawarra or Wynns
Coonawarra, you've tasted the fruits of the labour
of Southcorp's award-winning winemakers,
harvested on KRONE network infrastructure.
