Skilled Communications
leads by example
Australia's largest workforce resources company,
Skilled Engineering, has installed a KRONE
structured cabling system in its new premises, as a
customer reference site for its Communications
Division.
Born of the deregulation of the Australian
telecommunications industry and the roll-out of
cable television networks, Skilled Communications
installs, maintains and tests a wide range of
products for the telecommunications and power
distribution industries.
When Skilled acquired and began refurbishing a
building in Melbourne for the company's new
headquarters, it was natural that it chose to design
and install the cabling using its own resources.
The Communications Division designed a cabling
infrastructure for the two-storey building for 600
outlets to be used for voice and data applications by

all head office staff, from the board of directors
through to accounts and administration staff.
Daryl Mangles, Skilled Communications' national
business manager for installation and service,
explained "The building was being rebuilt internally,
giving us the perfect opportunity to install the
'ideal' cabling infrastructure as an example to our
customers.
"We had recently installed KRONE's HIGHBAND for
Ansett Australia, so were aware of the product's
benefits, compared to competitor products. We also
wanted the flexibility lent by its 'Patch by Exception'
capabilities, which weren't replicated anywhere else.
"Skilled has a philosophy of expanding the skills of
its own people to facilitate corporate growth, so the
movement of personnel through various departments
occurs fairly regularly. That's why we needed a
flexible solution that would be easy for the network
administrator to manage without turning it into a
huge mess of cables."
Patch by Exception allows network managers, with
minimum knowledge of cabling systems, to create
temporary 'patches' in the network's configuration.
Instead of calling out a certified technician to re-
configure the cabling every time an employee moves
desks in an office, a temporary patch cable instantly
re-routes the traffic from the old to the new outlet
until a technician can make the change permanent.
"Costs can be reduced significantly due to the
economy of using jumper cable instead of patch cords

and the patch frame remains a lot tidier because less
cable is required to make the jumpered leads cross
connect. When patching is required, it can be carried
out reliably using latched patch plugs without any
interruption to live circuits," said Mr Mangles. "This
saves on maintenance costs and there is a noticeable
difference in the speed of the changes.”
Approximately 80 per cent of the installation work
done by Skilled Communications involves KRONE
products and, as such, it was the obvious choice in
the company's own premises.
"Because the product is so easy to install, the
project was completed in less than four months,
even though we had to work around other
contractors, such as painters and plasterers.
"We have installed more outlets than we can
currently use, so that with future growth the system
will still be able to take care of all our needs"
concludes Mr Mangles.
