Throughput and Warranty a
Healthy Solution for St Andrew’s
St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital is using
KRONE's cutting-edge information technology to
improve communication and efficiency.
St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital at Spring Hill,
Brisbane, specialises in technologically advanced
surgical and medical care. It has earned its
reputation through its commitment to the provision
of the highest quality healthcare.
Doctors and staff at St Andrew's are using cutting-
edge information technology to improve
communication and efficiency and thus it is vital St
Andrew's communications network infrastructure is
able to cope with existing and emerging
technologies.
At present St Andrew’s is undergoing a major
redevelopment, which is complex because it
involves converting the compact inner city site to
provide new facilities while maintaining the

operations of the existing hospital.
Stage one of the development has recently been
completed and consists of a nine-storey building
containing four ward floors and five levels of car
parking.
The Information Technology Project Team for stage
one comprised Steve Englart, Information Services
Manager for St Andrew’s, who worked closely with
communications consultants, Norman Disney &
Young and voice and data cable installer, TriState.
" We have progressively moved into the building
over the past few months as the builder has
finished various ward floors," said Steve Englart.
" In time, the whole of the existing hospital will
be refurbished or rebuilt. We had used KRONE
Cat 5 products over a number of years in other
areas of the site and were endeavouring to
standardise on a company infrastructure for our
communications network.
" The project team looked at higher technologies
such as Cat 6 and options such as pair managed,
RJ45 and Patch-by-Exception solutions from KRONE
and other suppliers.
" St Andrew's runs both a clinical local area
network (LAN) and an administrative LAN. We
needed the flexibility to patch between LANs and
wall outlets while limiting the number of active
switching components. Given the crucial nature
of our communications, data throughput was
extremely important and we wanted a solution

that was going to last - possibly for ten years,"
he explained.
" KRONE's TrueNet

Cat 5e solution was our
choice for horizontal connectivity and we are
using KRONE fibre for vertical cabling," said Mr
Englart.
St Andrew’s automatically receives our exclusive
'20/5' warranty. This incorporates a 20-year all-
inclusive industry standards compliance warranty

including parts, labour and technical support plus a
five-year throughput warranty guaranteeing zero
bit error rate performance from the structured
cabling channel.
Price, performance, the known reliability of the
brand and TrueNet's capacity to handle future

technologies were key factors in St Andrew's
decision.
" In the long run, if you can standardise on
infrastructure and infrastructure suppliers, it makes
your job so much easier. The value in having just
one manufacturer's warranty rather than many is
incalculable," said Mr Englart.
The new building's four floors of wards bring an
additional 80 beds to the hospital's existing 230
beds. Depending on its location, each bed has
approximately four data outlets - for phone, clinical
LAN, administrative LAN and the Internet.
As with the other areas at St Andrew’s, the new
facility patches back to the central computer room
in an adjacent building.
" We have a total of 540 outlets at this stage. The
Internet is not yet connected to the patient bedside
- but it is something that has been requested in
patient surveys and the infrastructure is now in
place. St Andrew's aim is to provide expanded
support to doctors, their patients and families, in
every sense. Our new network facilitates our
achievement of this goal," said Mr Englart.

ST

ANDREW’S
St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital specialises in

general medical, high-tech and surgical care - that
means anything from open-heart surgery and hip
replacements to intensive eye surgery and
hysterectomy. The hospital aims to provide the most
advanced technology and best possible skills
available, at all times, and for every patient.
St Andrew's was the first Private Hospital in
Queensland to be accredited by the Australian
Council on Healthcare Standards, an award that
recognises its higher quality of care by way of
additional rebates to the hospital's patients.
The hospital was established as a living memorial to
those who died in the two World Wars and
embraces an innovative attitude to patient care, an
holistic attitude that provides expanded support to
doctors, their patients and families both before and
after hospitalisation.
