For the next few weeks, tour operators will be sorting through the annual deluge of customers’ complaints. Ron
Wheal, head of customer relations for Britain's biggest holiday company, which took more than a million abroad
this summer, says, "Holidaymakers are complaining about <b>petty</b>,<b> </b> silly little things." "The fact that their hotel is
next to a road. How do they expect to get to their hotel if it's not next to a road?" Perhaps one of the most common
complaints is that the holiday fails to live up to the brochure promises. A family from Berkshire with two young
children was attracted by a two-week package in a three-star hotel that was described as "friendly" and

"particularly suitable for families with children". It offered "cots, <b>baby minding </b>, high chairs and early suppers".
When they arrived, the hotel was not up to three-star standard, the staffs were <b>rude</b> and the promised facilities for
children were practically non-existent. An initial complaint which had been sent to the holiday company by the
family was answered with an "<b> ex-gratia</b>"<b> </b> payment of $30. With the help of a consumer magazine, the family
issued a summons claiming $500 - which the holiday company eventually met in full.

<b>HAWAII, ISLAND STATE</b>

Out in the Pacific Ocean, 3700 kilometers from Los Angeles, are the islands of Hawaii, the 50th state of the

United States. This group of eight main islands has a land area of only 16,700 square kilometers stretched over
2500 kilometers of ocean. Hawaii became a state in 1959 and is smaller than 46 of the other states.

The first Hawaii arrived from other Pacific islands sometime around 100 A.D. Their society developed for
centuries without visitors from Europe, Asia, or Africa. Then all this changed. In 1778, Captain James Cook, the
great English explorer, visited Hawaii. He put the islands on his maps of the Pacific. Ships searching for whales
began stopping there for supplies.

In 1820, a small group of people from the eastern United States came to teach the Hawaii people about

Christianity. They started farms to grow sugarcane and, later, pineapples. Soon there were not enough people to do
all the farm work, so the farm owners brought in Asians–Chinese starting in 1852, Japanese in 1868, and Filipinos
in 1906. Koreans, Portuguese, and Puerto Ricans also came. The people in each group worked hard, saved their
money, and built homes. Some of them got better jobs or started their own small businesses. More people came
from the U.S. mainland and from other Pacific islands. Hawaii became an island with traditions from several
countries.

Today about 1.1 million people live in Hawaii, but only 10,000 are native Hawaiians. People from the various

national groups have married each other, so today the groups are partly mixed. For example, a child might have
Chinese-Hawaiian mother and a Portuguese-Filipino father. Hawaii has some special traditions. Hawaiians are
very friendly and always welcome visitors. They give visitors leis. A lei is a long necklace made from beautiful
fresh flowers from the Hawaiian islands. Men wear bright flowered shirts, and women often wear long flowered
dresses. People celebrate traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino holidays as well as the holiday from the
United States. Hawaii is known as the Aloha State. Aloha means both “hello” and “good bye” in Hawaiian. It also
means “I love you.”

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(4)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=4>

sugar and pineapple companies have moved to the Philippines, where they do not have to pay workers as much
money. The families of the first people who came from the U.S. mainland own most of the important banks and
companies. Many Japanese are also buying or starting businesses in Hawaii. Sometimes when people from many
different countries, races, and traditions live together there are some problems. But in Hawaii, there are very few
serious problems. In general, the people of Hawaii have learned to live together on those beautiful islands in
peace.

<b>Keeping our teeth healthy</b>

It’s very important to have healthy teeth. Good teeth help us to chew our food. They also help us to look nice.
How does a tooth go bad? The decay begins in a little crack in the enamel covering of the tooth. This happens
after germs and bits of food have collected there. Then the decay slowly spreads inside the tooth. Eventually,
poison goes into the blood, and we may feel quite ill.

How can we keep our teeth healthy? First, we ought to visit our dentist twice a year. He can fill the small holes in

our teeth before they destroy the teeth. He can examine our teeth to check that they are growing in the right way.
Unfortunately, many people wait until they have toothache before they see a dentist.

<b>EXAM STRESS</b>
<i>1. Symptoms of exam stress</i>

According to Professor Turnbull, a neurologist, more than 25% of America teenagers feel stressed at least once a day.
And nothing gets students down than exams. Nearly 90% of teenagers suffer from stress at least once. “They come
down with migraines, and many have problems eating and sleeping.”

<i>2. Extra stress</i>

<b> C. Pete – Guitarist and singer - 50 years old </b>

When I was 16, I played the lead guitar in a band, doing versions of songs by The Beatles and
The Stones. The other guys in the group seemed to think our chances of success were slim, but I
took no notice. I was confident I’d make a name for myself one day, with or without the rest of the
band. I left when I was 20 to become a session musician, which was a mistake, I realized
afterward, as it took me away from the one place I wanted to be – the stage. Then my wife and I
had two children and I decided to put them first and got a more stable job in a bank. Now they are
both grown up, I’ve started performing again – songs I write myself, this time. I play the local pubs
and clubs at weekends only, which is enough for me at my age!

<b>D. Jake – Rap singer - 19 years old </b>

I remembered when I was five and I sang a couple of songs on the karaoke machine at my
uncle’s 30th birthday party. When I finished, everyone cheered and came up and gave me hugs
and kisses. ‘This is good,' I thought, ‘I could get used to this!’ Then at school, I performed in plays
and musicals – always the lead part, of course – and once again, the audience’s reaction made
me feel good. I think I knew at that stage I was going to be a star. It was just a question of time.
<b>B. Natasha – Violinist - 34 years old </b>

When I was just seven, I was accepted into a music conservatory in Moscow and had to spend
four or five hours a day practising. That’s a long time for someone of that age to keep their mind
on something as intense as that, and I didn’t always succeed. Friends and family tried to put me
off becoming a professional musician because it’s such a hard life. They’re right of course but I’m
glad I ignored them. Now, as I get older, I want to move away from performing and the constant
tours, and start composing my own music. It’ll also be easier to start my own family if I have a
more permanent home.

Fear of failing exams is understandable. However, pressure from parents and teachers adds to the stress. “My parents
expect me to be good at everything – academic subject, sport, and music! It’s ridiculous,” says Macy, 16, from
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

<i>3. Prepare your environment </i>

“You should make a revision plan that is realistic and that gives you enough time to study,” recommends Prof Turnbull.
“Students should eat healthy meals – oily fish and green vegetables contain chemicals that help you memory. The
revision environment is important. Student ought to find a quiet place to revise. They mustn’t leave things on their desk
that can distract them, such as a cell phone. And they should see their friends just a few times a week – and if
possible, no testing and no emails.

<i>4. How to revise</i>

“Make a list before you start revising each day. Study the most difficult things early in the day, when your memory is
fresher. After you have finished revising, check the list – and then rest. Exam stress wears off when you read a
magazine, listen to music, or do sports.”

<i>5. On the big day</i>

“If you start to feel nervous, breathe deeply for a minute. Then skim all the exam questions. Read all the instruction
carefully. How many questions do you have to answer? Are there any sections that you don’t have to answer? Be
prepared – then you won’t get any nasty surprises halfway through the exam.”

<i>6. When it is all over </i>

“Well done! You’ve done the best you could. Don’t look at the questions with your friends, as this can make you worry
more. Concentrate on your next exam. But take a rest first.

<i> Many countries around the world have no caves. This is not because there are no hills or mountains in those</i>
places. Some of the world's biggest mountains have no caves because they are not made of the right sort of stone.
But the low, limestone hills of the north of England and the south of France are full of interesting caves.

For hundreds of years, people have enjoyed finding caves and going inside them. This sport is called

cavers come from there. That is why we know so much about European caves. But in many other parts of the
world there are hundreds of caves which few people have ever visited. For example, there are many caves in
Russia and Afganistan, in Albania and China, but not many cavers in those countries and it is often very difficult
for foreign cavers to get permission to visit.
