Introduction
At ADC, we set the standards the industry follows. This is no more evident than with the introduction of
our new RZX-3 (Reduced Si
Z
e DSX-3). No one packs more jacks, performance, flexibility, and durability into
DSX than ADC’s new RZX-3. In fact, with the possibility of 448 midsize jack ports utilizing BNC connector
interfaces in a 7-foot rack, the new RZX-3 has more capacity than any other midsize DSX in the world.
With greater density, unparalleled robustness, unrivaled modularity, diagnostic superiority, simplified restoral
capabilities and the only solution available with modular pre-termination, you’ll find that ADC leads the way.
Again, RZX-3 sets the new standard.
A System Solution
RZX-3 is designed as a total system solution – not just components. Focused on simplifying the solution,
the system approach provides ease of expansion, streamlines cross-connect jumper installation and reduces
premature jumper exhaustion. And with one part-number ordering, your engineering, purchasing and
installation labor is greatly reduced.
Standard system features include what’s most important to your success. RZX-3 is the ultimate in density.
The 4” chassis contains up to 32 circuit frames in a 19” width offering greater density than any other mid-
size jack interface in the industry. RZX-3 continues ADC’s tradition as the industry leader in cable manage-
ment. Designing the RZX-3 system with a rear adjustable cable tray, you’re prepared to accommodate maxi-
mum cable density. Permanent equipment connections have been recessed to allow the quick identifiable
access to semi-permanent cross-connect BNCs. And, with its “plug and play” architecture, the RZX-3 system
is fully modular throughout chassis, circuit frames and jacks. Individual BNC circuit frames remove easily
from the chassis providing the most simplified and cost-effective restoral capabilities available.
Built for Reliability
Our robust DSX jack design is constructed with mechanical support to ensure lifetime service, not by a sol-
der type connection on a printed circuit board. ADC’s highly durable BNC is standard in the RZX-3 system.
Its solid cylinder design has a closed entry contact to prevent spring contact overstress. We don’t use
Teflon insulators, ensuring true 75 ohm impedance. RZX-3’s sealed jack has firewall protection preventing
environmental contaminants from disturbing switch contacts. Add to all this ADC’s proven “make-before-
break” switching design. Make-before-break contacts ensure that high speed signals never go open or un-

terminated during in-service patching. DS3 signals are always terminated to a 75 ohm load preventing sig-
nal oscillation that can lead to bit errors during patching.
Setting the Standard
The ultimate in density. Unparalleled robustness and unrivaled modularity. Diagnostic superiority, simplified
restoral capabilities and the only solution available with modular pre-termination. RZX-3. Setting the new
standard.

Maximum cable limits (based on 735 type coaxial cable) and cable connection diagram are illustrated above.
The RZX-3 system is designed for miniature 735 type coaxial cable. The use of larger diameter coaxial cable
will add to cable congestion and may limit the growth of the DSX system.
To keep pace with technology and customer demands that seem to change daily, your network must be
100 percent reliable and completely flexible. A vital part of today’s network migration strategy, the DSX
enables patching, terminating and rearranging of circuits as traffic patterns change and demands on the
network grow.
The RZX-3 Rear Cross-Connect System is designed for configurations capable of 24 or 32 modules in a
single 4" high x 19" wide chassis. These incremental chassis counts match up perfectly to North American
SONET group counts of 3 and 12, digital cross-connect (DCS) group counts of 12 and 16, and international
SDH group counts of 16. RZX-3 supports all Coaxial Interface Digital Signal Rates; including DS3, DS-4NA,
DS4, STS-1, STS-3, E1, E3, STM-1
RXZ-3 is suitable for all locations where high density space savings are required, such as:
• Central office hub nodes
• Intermediate distribution nodes
• Point of presence (POP) carrier handoff nodes
• Customer premise nodes
• Huts, CEVs, Cabinets

This high density Digital System Cross-Connect (DSX) provides cable termination, jack access and cross-con-
nect functions in a coaxial based broadband network to form a centralized cross-connect (distribution frame)
for digital signals. Designed to be transparent in the digital hierarchy, DSX equipment permits temporary
jack access, cross-connection, reconfiguration and restoration of various digital circuits. Internal jack circuits
provide input/output connections to each digital signal level source.
Each Network Element (NE) is permanently cabled to a separate DSX-3 module. Any NE may be connected
to any other NE in a non-dedicated manner by means of a semi-permanent cross-connect jumper placed
between two DSX-3 modules. The cross-connect jumper allows flexibility for network reconfiguration in the
future. LEDs at each DSX module identify both NEs that are cross-connected together. Digital signals are
accessed through the IN, OUT and MONITOR jacks at each DSX module for testing and patching operations.

Modules
3 Port Module
The 3 port module provides IN and OUT switching jacks for direct access to the network element’s input and out-
put signals, and a single MONITOR jack connected to the OUT jack for non-intrusive access to the network ele-
ment’s output signal.
4 Port Module
The 4 port module provides IN and OUT switching jacks for direct access to the network element’s input and out-
put signals. DUAL MONITOR jacks allow monitoring both directions of transmission at a single module location.
6 Port Module
The 6 port module provides IN and OUT switching jacks for direct access to the network element’s input and out-
put signals. DUAL MONITOR jacks allow monitoring both directions of transmission at a single module location. In
addition to these four jacks, the 6 port module provides auxiliary X-IN and X-OUT switching jacks that access
toward the cross-connect. These additional access ports are especially helpful when the other end of the cross-
connect is physically located at a great distance (such as another room or floor) or when access to the other end
is restricted (such as the collocation of two different service providers).
Pre-Termination Option

The RZX-3 chassis may be initially configured with circuit frame modules, but no jacks, in order to create a fully
modular pre-termination connection point for equipment cables. Similar to the deployment of network elements
that are not equipped with electronic circuit cards until service is required, the RZX-3 can defer the cost of jacks
until service is required. The chassis and cable infrastructure may be constructed in preparation of future service
demand, while jack costs are deferred until revenue generating service is turned up. Unlike any other pre-termi-
nation DSX chassis, this fully modular design allows any single component to be replaced if damaged, without
interrupting adjacent in-service circuits.
Rack Mounting
Whether selecting the 24 or 32 position 4” high mounting chassis, all configurations are compatible with 19” rack
mounting. With its basic architecture, RZX-3 is ideal for any 19" or 23" mounting arrangement in racks or cabinets.
Traditional DSX requirements are defined to have an IN, OUT and MONITOR jack. Each DSX position or
module provides an IN and OUT switching jack for direct access to the network element’s input and output
signals. These jacks provide a means to temporarily break the connection between network elements that
are cross-connected together and allow access to the signals for test and patching operations. A MONITOR
jack with a high impedance bridge network (21.5 dB below the active signal) is connected to the OUT jack
for non-intrusive access to the output signal of each network element
The rear cross-connect modules have jacks for temporary access on the front of the module, permanent
equipment cable interface connections on the rear of the module, and semi-permanent cross-connect inter-
face connections on the rear of the module.

The DSX-4R pre-terminated chassis option allows

network elements to be cabled to the DSX without
deploying the DSX jacks. This feature allows the
cost of jacks to be deferred until revenue is gener-
ated by service demand.
Each position of the pre-termination chassis is
equipped with a circuit frame including BNC recep-
tacles. Network elements are cabled during initial
installation. When service turn-up is required, a
jack kit is plugged into the circuit frame to com-
plete the circuit and provide jack access for testing
and patching.
Jumper rings are sold separately. See pages 13-16 for jumper ring kits and skeleton bays with cable management and fuse panel.
