DON’T WORRY IN SILENCE
When we are young, sometimes the hardest thing about feelings is actually sharing them with others,
though, I realise now, it is certainly worth making the effort to do so. Sharing with others helps us to share the load,
as it were.
It was not until much later, looking back over my childhood, that I realised that the first step in sharing was
to identify what feelings I actually had! Making a list of them seemed to help. Was I happy or was I sad? Was it all
emotion experienced only at that particular time or did I tend to feel like that all the time?
My problem was that I had not realised that some fears are quite acceptable and even helpful at times,
while others can actually get in the way of enjoying everyday things such as learning, playing with a friend or
experiencing for the first time the change from Primary to Secondary level. This is when I really should have had a
chat with my parents instead of holding it all inside, as they would have been able to lessen my anxiety about
moving up.
There were times when my anxiety would also be accompanied by a headache, a stomachache or dizziness.
My grandmother used to tell me that there is a certain part of the brain that controls that fight or flight feeling. Not
that I had any idea what she was talking about as I must have been only about knee-high at the time!
I recall a small group of us feeling uncomfortable at the idea of meeting new teachers or moving up to the
“big” school. That kind of discomfort at such an age is natural when faced with something new. Better late than
never, I realised that being shy is not such a bad thing. Nobody actually sets out to be like that, it just happens
naturally. I understood quite quickly that the key to shyness is just to be yourself. No matter the age, it’s healthy to
get things off your chest! In fact, I quickly found that some of my friends had the same feelings and became quite
happy to share their secrets. Sometimes, just inviting a shy child to join in a game a couple of times helped them to
get over their feelings of shyness.
There were other times when I felt sad about leaving Primary school, but then again, it was one of the many
normal emotions or moods we have all experienced during that period of change. Unhappiness was the emotion I
felt when I had to say goodbye to certain dear friends. It made me feel like crying, though even crying made me
feel better as tears slowly washed away the negative emotions. When the sadness started to disappear, it felt as if a
heavy weight had been lifted from my shoulders.
I now realise at the tender age of twenty- eight that, even though, there might sometimes seem to be no
reason to look on the bright side of life, for every bad there is a good. Also, having friends who think optimistically
can help you get on your feet again and move forward onto a more positive path.

Reading passage:
As heart disease continues to be the number-one killer in the United States, researchers have become
increasingly interested in identifying the potential risk factors that trigger heart attacks. High-fat diets
and "life in the fast lane" have long been known to contribute to the high incidence of heart failure. But
according to new studies, the list of risk factors may be significantly longer and quite surprising.
Heart failure, for example, appears to have seasonal and temporal patterns. A higher percentage of
heart attacks occur in cold weather, and more people experience heart failure on Monday than on any
other day of the week. In addition, people are more susceptible to heart attacks in the first few hours
after waking. Cardiologists first observed this morning phenomenon in the mid-1980, and have since
discovered a number of possible causes. An early-morning rise in blood pressure, heart rate, and
concentration of heart stimulating hormones, plus a reduction of blood flow to the heart, may all
immediately preceding and following their birthdays. And unmarried men are more at risk for heart
attacks than their married counterparts. Though stress is thought to be linked in some way to all of the
aforementioned risk factors, intense research continues in the hope of further comprehending why and
how heart failure is triggered.

You can usually tell when your friends are happy or angry by the looks on their faces or by
their actions. This is useful because reading their emotional expressions helps you to know
how to respond to them. Emotions have evolved to help us respond to important situations
and to convey our intentions to others. But does raising the eyebrows and rounding the
mouth say the same thing in Minneapolis as it does in Madagascar? Much research on
emotional expressions has centered on such questions.
According to Paul Ekman, the leading researcher in this area, people speak and
understand substantially the same “facial language”. Studies by Ekman’s group have
demonstrated that humans share a set of universal emotional expressions that testify to the
common biological heritage of the human species. Smiles, for example, signal happiness and
frowns indicate sadness on the faces of people in such far- flung places as Argentina, Japan,
Spain, Hungary, Poland , Sumatra ,the United States, Vietnam, the jungles of New Guinea ,
and the Eskimo villages north of Artic Circle. Ekman and his colleagues claim that people
everywhere can recognize at least seven basic emotions: sadness, fear, anger, disgust,
contempt, happiness, and surprise. There are, however, huge differences across cultures in
both the context and intensity of emotional displays – the so called display rules. In many
Asian cultures, for example, children are taught to control emotional responses – especially
negative ones- while many American children are encouraged to express their feelings more
openly. Regardless of culture, however, emotions usually show themselves, to some degree ,
in people’s behavior. From their first days of life, babies produce facial expressions that
communicate their feelings.
species boundaries. Cross - cultural psychologists tell us that certain emotional responses
carry different meanings in different cultures. For example, what emotion do you suppose
might be conveyed by sticking out your tongue? For Americans, this might indicate disgust,
while in China it can signify surprise. Likewise, a grin on an American face may indicate joy,
while on a Japanese face it may just as easily mean embarrassment. Clearly, culture
influences emotional expressions.

answer to each of the questions from 51 to 60.
At 7pm on a dark, cold November evening, thousands of people are making their way across a vast car park.
They're not here to see a film, or the ballet, or even the circus. They are all here for what is, bizarrely, a global
phenomenon: they are here to see Holiday on Ice. Given that most people don't seem to be acquainted with
anyone who's ever been, the show's statistics are extraordinary: nearly 300 million people have seen Holiday on
Ice since it began in 1943; it is the most popular live entertainment in the world.
But what does the production involve? And why are so many people prepared to spend their lives travelling
round Europe in caravans in order to appear in it? It can't be glamorous, and it's undoubtedly hard work. The
backstage atmosphere is an odd mix of gym class and workplace. A curtained-off section at the back of the arena
is laughably referred to as the girls' dressing room, but is more accurately described as a corridor, with beige,
cracked walls and cheap temporary tables set up along the length of it. Each girl has a small area littered with pots
of orange make-up, tubes of mascara and long false eyelashes.
As a place to work, it must rank pretty low down the scale: the area round the ice-rink is grey and mucky with rows of
dirty blue and brown plastic seating and red carpet tiles. It's an unimpressive picture, but the show itself is an
unquestionably vast, polished global enterprise: the lights come from a firm in Texas, the people who make the
audio system are in California, but Montreal supplies the smoke effects; former British Olympic skater Robin
Cousins is now creative director for the company and conducts a vast master class to make sure they're ready for
the show's next performance.
The next day, as the music blares out from the sound system, the cast start to go through their routines under
Cousins' direction. Cousins says, The aim is to make sure they're all still getting to exactly the right place on the ice
at the right time - largely because the banks of lights in the ceiling are set to those places, and if the skaters are all
half a metre out they'll be illuminating empty ice. Our challenge,' he continues, 'is to produce something they can
It may be a job which he took to pay the rent, but you can't doubt his enthusiasm. 'The only place you'll see
certain skating moves is an ice show,' he says, 'because you're not allowed to do them in competition. It's not in the
rules. So the ice show world has things to offer which the competitive world just doesn't.' Cousins knows what he's
talking about because he skated for the show himself when he stopped competing - he was financially unable to
retire. He learnt the hard way that you can't put on an Olympic performance every night. 'I'd be thinking, these people
solution, he realised, was to give 75 per cent every night, rather than striving for the sort of twice-a-year excellence
which won him medals.
To be honest, for those of us whose only experience of ice-skating is watching top-class Olympic skaters, some
of the movements can look a bit amateurish, but then, who are we to judge? Equally, it's impossible not to be swept
up in the whole thing; well, you'd have to try pretty hard not to enjoy it.

answer to each of the questions from 61 to 70.
Being aware of one’s own emotions – recognizing and acknowledging feelings as they happen – is at the very
heart of Emotional Intelligence. And this awareness encompasses not only moods but also thoughts about those
Managing emotions does not mean suppressing them; nor does it mean giving free rein to every feeling.
Psychologist Daniel Goleman, one of several authors who have popularized the notion of Emotional Intelligence,
insisted that the goal is balance and that every feeling has value and significance. As Goleman said, “A life without
passion would be a dull wasteland of neutrality, cut off and isolated from the richness of life itself.” Thus, we
manage our emotions by expressing them in an appropriate manner. Emotions can also be managed by engaging
in activities that cheer us up, soothe our hurts, or reassure us when we feel anxious.
ability to manage them. In other words, if two individuals are intensely angry, the one who is better able to
understand why he or she is angry will also be better able to manage the anger.
Self-motivation refers to strong emotional self-control, which enables a person to get moving and pursue worthy
goals, persist at tasks even when frustrated, and resist the temptation to act on impulse. Resisting impulsive
behavior is, according to Goleman, “the root of all emotional self-control.”
Of all the attributes of Emotional Intelligence, the ability to postpone immediate gratification and to persist in
working toward some greater future gain is most closely related to success – whether one is trying to build a
business, get a college degree, or even stay on a diet. One researcher examined whether this trait can predict a
child’s success in school. The study showed that 4-year-old children who can delay instant gratification in order to
advance toward some future goal will be “far superior as students” when they graduate from high school than will
4-year-olds who are not able to resist the impulse to satisfy their immediate wishes.

share their knowledge.
Encyclopedias began in ancient times as collections of writings about all aspects of human
knowledge. The word itself comes from ancient Greek, and means “a complete general education”. Real
popularity for encyclopedias came in the nineteenth century in Europe and the United States, with the
publication of encyclopedias written for ordinary readers. With the invention of the CD-ROM, the same
amount of information could be put on a few computer discs. Then with the Internet, it became possible
to create an online encyclopedia that could be constantly updated, like Microsoft’s Encarta. However,
even Internet-based encyclopedias like Encarta were written by paid experts. At first, Wikipedia, the
brainchild of Jimmy Wales, a businessman in Chicago, was not so different from these. In 2001, he had
the idea for an Internet-based encyclopedia that would provide information quickly and easily to
everyone. Furthermore, that information would be available free, unlike other Internet encyclopedias at
that time.
But Wales, like everyone else, believed that people with special knowledge were needed to write
the articles, and so he began by hiring experts. He soon changed his approach, however, as it took

Fiberscopes are one of the most are one of the most important outcomes of he science of fiber
optics. Fibers made of glass and transparent acrylic plastic are capable of conveying light energy, and
when thousands of these fibers are combined in what is called a fiberscope, they can transmit images.
The most common fiberscopes contain about 750,000 fibers, each 0.001 centimeter, or 10 microns, in
diameter. For certain uses, the diameter of the fiber may be as small as 5 microns.
Fiberscopes have a wide range of applications. In the medical field, physicians use fiberscopes to
examine internal organs and as an aid in delicate surgeries. Miniature probes have also been developed
to view muscle fiber, skin tissue, and blood cells. Fiberscopes have also found varied uses in industry,
particularly to inspect or control operations in inaccessible areas. Bundles of fiberscopes fused together
in a solid plate, called a faceplate, are being used in the manufacture of television tubes and other
cathode-ray tube devices.
The most far reaching applications of fiber-optic technology are in communication. Optical fibers
carry voice messages for telephone service. The sound of the voice is electronically broken down into
thousands of pulses per second, which causes a transmitting laser to send coordinated pulses of light
through the optical fibers. At the receiving end, the light pulses are converted to electrical signals and
the voice message is reconstructed. Light-wave communication systems can handle an immensely
greater number of telephone calls and television programs than the current system, and they will form
the basis of the “electronic superhighway” expected to crisscross the nation in the near future of the
information age.

ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISTS
Paul Watson is an environmental activist. He is a man who believes that he must do something,
not just talk about doing something. Paul believes in protecting endangered animals, and he protects
them in controversial ways. Some people think that Watson is a hero and admire him very much. Other
people think that he is a criminal.
On July 16th, 1979, Paul Watson and his crew were on his ship, which is called the Sea
Shepherd. Watson and the people who work on the Sea Shepherd were hunting on the Atlantic Ocean
near Portugal. However, they had a strange prey; instead of hunting for animals, their prey was a ship,
the Sierra. The Sea Shepherd found the Sierra, ran into it and sank it. As a result, the Sierra never
returned to the sea. The Sea Shepherd, on the other hand, returned to its home in Canada. Paul Watson
and his workers thought that they had been successful.
The Sierra had been a whaling ship, which had operated illegally. The captain and the crew of the
Sierra did not obey any of the international laws that restrict whaling. Instead, they killed as many whales
as they could, quickly cut off the meat, and froze it. Later, they sold the whale meat in countries where it
is eaten.
Paul Watson tried to persuade the international whaling commission to stop the Sierra. However,
the commission did very little, and Paul became impatient. He decided to stop the Sierra and other
whaling ships in any way that he could. He offered to pay $25,000 to anyone who sank any illegal
whaling ship, and he sank the Sierra. He acted because he believes that the whales must be protected.
Still, he acted without the approval of the government; therefore, his actions were controversial.
Paul Watson is not the only environmental activist. Other men and women are also fighting to
protect the Earth. Like Watson, they do not always have the approval of their governments, and like
Watson, they have become impatient. Yet, because of their concern for the environment, they will act to
protect it.
