<b>DON’T WORRY IN SILENCE</b>

When we are young, sometimes the hardest thing about feelings is actually sharing them with others,
though, I realise now, it is certainly worth making the effort to do so. Sharing with others helps us to share the load,
as it were.

It was not until much later, looking back over my childhood, that I realised that the first step in sharing was
to identify what feelings I actually had! Making a list of them seemed to help. Was I happy or was I sad? Was it all
emotion experienced only at that particular time or did I tend to feel like that all the time?

My problem was that I had not realised that some fears are quite acceptable and even helpful at times,
while others can actually get in the way of enjoying everyday things such as learning, playing with a friend or
experiencing for the first time the change from Primary to Secondary level. This is when I really should have had a
chat with my parents instead of holding it all inside, as they would have been able to lessen my anxiety about
moving up.

There were times when my anxiety would also be accompanied by a headache, a stomachache or dizziness.
My grandmother used to tell me that there is a certain part of the brain that controls that fight or flight feeling. Not
that I had any idea what she was talking about as I must have been only about <b>knee-high</b> at the time!

I recall a small group of us feeling uncomfortable at the idea of meeting new teachers or moving up to the
“big” school. That kind of discomfort at such an age is natural when faced with something new. Better late than
never, I realised that being shy is not such a bad thing. Nobody actually sets out to be like that, it just happens
naturally. I understood quite quickly that the key to shyness is just to be yourself. No matter the age, it’s healthy to
get things off your chest! In fact, I quickly found that some of my friends had the same feelings and became quite
happy to share their secrets. Sometimes, just inviting a shy child to join in a game a couple of times helped them to
get over their feelings of shyness.

There were other times when I felt sad about leaving Primary school, but then again, it was one of the many
normal emotions or moods we have all experienced during that period of change. Unhappiness was the emotion I
felt when I had to say goodbye to certain dear friends. It made me feel like crying, though even crying made me
feel better as tears slowly washed away the negative emotions. When the sadness started to disappear, it felt as if a
heavy weight had been lifted from my shoulders.

I now realise at the tender age of twenty- eight that, even though, there might sometimes seem to be no
reason to look on the bright side of life, for every bad there is a good. Also, having friends who think optimistically
can help you get on your feet again and move forward onto a more positive path.

<b>it</b>

produced, at least in its popular forms, in the main by

solemn, typically moralistic men from New England and the Old South; no longer

were polite, well-dressed, grammatically correct, middle-class young people the

only central characters in its narratives; no longer were these narratives to be set in

<b>exotic</b>

places and remote times; no longer,

<b>indeed</b>

, were fiction, poetry, drama,

and formal history the chief acceptable forms of literary expression; no longer,

finally, was literature read primarily by young, middle class women.

In sum, American literature in

<b>these years</b>

fulfilled in considerable measure the

condition Walt Whitman called for in 1867 in describing Leaves of Grass: it treats,

he said of his own major work, each state and region as peers "and expands from

them, and includes the world ... connecting an American citizen with the citizens of

all nations." At the same time, these years saw the emergence of what has been

designated "the literature of argument," powerful works in sociology, philosophy,

psychology, many of them impelled by the spirit of exposure and reform. Just as

America learned to play a role in this half century as an autonomous international

political, economic, and military power, so did its literature establish itself as a

producer of major works.

Questions : 51 - 60

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C ,or D on your answer sheet to indicate

the correct word for each of the blanks.

Ask anyone over forty to make a comparison (51)--- the past and the present and nine

(52)---ten people will tell you that things have been getting (53)--- worse for as long as

they can remember. Take the weather for example, which has been behaving rather strangely

lately. Everyone remembers that in their childhood the summers were(54)--- hotter, and that

winter always included abundant falls of snow just when the school holidays had started. Of

course, the food in those days was far superior too, as nothing was imported and everything

was fresh. Unemployment was negligible, the pound really was worth something, and you could

buy a sizeable house even if your means were limited. And above all, people were

(55)---better in those days, far more friendly, not inclined to crime or violence, and spent their free time

making model boats and tending their stamp collections (56)--- than gazing at the

television screen for hours on end. As we know that this picture of the past (57)--- cannot

be true, and there are plenty of statistics dealing with health and prosperity which prove that it is

not true, why is it that we all have a (58)--- to idealize the past ? Is this simply nostalgia? Or

is it rather that we need to believe in an image of the world which is (59)--- the opposite of

what we see around us? Whichever it is, at least it leaves us with a nagging feeling that the

present could be better, and perhaps (60)--- us to be a little more critical about the way we

live.

Aging is the process of growing old. It occurs eventually in every living thing

provided, of course, that an illness or accident does not kill it prematurely. The most

familiar outward signs of aging may be seen in old people, such as the graying of the

hair and the wrinkling of the skin. Signs of aging in a pet dog or cat include loss of

playfulness and energy, a decline in hearing and eyesight, or even a slight graying of

the coat. Plants age too, but the signs are much harder to detect.

Most body plants grow bigger and stronger, and function more efficiently during

childhood. They reach their peak at the time of maturity, or early adulthood. After that

they begin to decline. Bones, for example, gradually become lighter and more brittle.

In the aged, the joints between the bones also become rigid and more flexible. This

can make moving very painful.

All the major organs of the body show signs aging. The brain, for example, works

less efficiently, and even gets smaller in size. Thinking processes of all sorts are

slowed down. Old people often have trouble in remembering recent events.

One of the most serious changes of old age occurs in the

<b>arteries</b>

, the blood

vessels that lead from the heart. They become thickened and constricted, allowing

less blood to flow to the rest of body. This condition accounts, directly or indirectly, for

many of the diseases of the aged. It may, for example, result in heart attack.

<b>Aging is not a uniform process</b>

. Different parts of the body wear out at different

rates. There are great differences among people in their rate of aging. Even the cells

of the body differ in the way they age. The majority of cells are capable of

reproducing themselves many times during the course of a lifetime. Nerve cells and

muscle fibers can never be replaced once they wear out.

Gerontologists - scientists who study the process of aging - believe the wearing out

of the body is controlled by a built - in biological time - clock. They are trying to

discover how this clock works so that they can slow down the process. This could

give man a longer life and a great number of productive years.

74. In old age , the bones ___________

(A) become more flexible (B) become heavier (C) cause much pain(D) break easily

75. According to the passage, what condition is responsible for many of the diseases of the old?

(A) Their trouble in remembering recent events

(B) The blood vessels that have become thickened and constricted

<b>Reading passage:</b>

As heart disease continues to be the number-one killer in the United States, researchers have become
increasingly interested in identifying the <b>potential</b> risk factors that<b> trigger</b> heart attacks. High-fat diets
and "life in the fast lane" have long been known to contribute to the high <b>incidence</b> of heart failure. But
according to new studies, the list of risk factors may be significantly longer and quite surprising.

Heart failure, for example, appears to have seasonal and <b>temporal</b> patterns. A higher percentage of
heart attacks occur in cold weather, and more people experience heart failure on Monday than on any
other day of the week. In addition, people are more <b>susceptible</b> to heart attacks in the first few hours
after waking. Cardiologists first observed this morning <b>phenomenon</b> in the mid-1980, and have since
discovered a number of possible causes. An early-morning rise in blood pressure, heart rate, and
concentration of heart stimulating hormones, plus a reduction of blood flow to the heart, may all

contribute to the higher incidence of heart attacks between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 10:00 A.M.

immediately preceding and following their birthdays. And unmarried men are more at risk for heart
attacks than their married counterparts. Though stress is thought to be linked in some way to all of the
aforementioned risk factors, intense research continues in the hope of further comprehending why and
how heart failure is triggered.

You can usually tell when your friends are happy or angry by the looks on their faces or by
their actions. This is useful because reading their emotional expressions helps you to know
how to respond to them. Emotions have <b>evolved</b> to help us respond to important situations
and to convey our intentions to others. But does raising the eyebrows and rounding the
mouth say the same thing in Minneapolis as it does in Madagascar? Much research on
emotional expressions has centered on such questions.

According to Paul Ekman, the leading researcher in this area, people speak and
understand substantially the same “facial language”. Studies by Ekman’s group have
demonstrated that humans share a set of universal emotional expressions that testify to the
common biological heritage of the human species. Smiles, for example, signal happiness and
frowns indicate sadness on the faces of people in such far- flung places as Argentina, Japan,
Spain, Hungary, Poland , Sumatra ,the United States, Vietnam, the jungles of New Guinea ,
and the Eskimo villages north of Artic Circle. Ekman and his colleagues claim that people
everywhere can recognize at least seven basic emotions: sadness, fear, anger, disgust,
contempt, happiness, and surprise. There are, however, huge differences across cultures in
both the context and intensity of emotional displays – the so called display rules. In many
Asian cultures, for example, children are taught to control emotional responses – especially
negative ones- while many American children are encouraged to express their feelings more
openly. Regardless of culture, however, emotions usually show themselves, to some degree ,
in people’s behavior. From their first days of life, babies produce facial expressions that
communicate their feelings.

species boundaries. Cross - cultural psychologists tell us that certain emotional responses
carry different meanings in different cultures. For example, what emotion do you suppose
might be conveyed by sticking out your tongue? For Americans, this might indicate disgust,
while in China it can signify surprise. Likewise, a grin on an American face may indicate joy,
while on a Japanese face it may just as easily mean embarrassment. Clearly, culture
influences emotional expressions.

<i><b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct</b></i>
<i><b>answer to each of the questions from 51 to 60.</b></i>

At 7pm on a dark, cold November evening, thousands of people are making their way across a vast car park.
They're not here to see a film, or the ballet, or even the circus. They are all here for what is, bizarrely, a global
phenomenon: they are here to see Holiday on Ice. Given that most people don't seem to be acquainted with
anyone who's ever been, the show's statistics are extraordinary: nearly 300 million people have seen Holiday on
Ice since it began in 1943; it is the most popular live entertainment in the world.

But what does the production involve? And why are so many people prepared to spend their lives travelling
round Europe in caravans in order to appear in it? It can't be glamorous, and it's undoubtedly hard work. The
backstage atmosphere is an odd mix of gym class and workplace. A curtained-off section at the back of the arena
is laughably referred to as the girls' dressing room, but is more accurately described as a corridor, with beige,
cracked walls and cheap temporary tables set up along the length of it. Each girl has a small area littered with pots
of orange make-up, tubes of mascara and long false eyelashes.

As a place to work,<b> it must rank pretty low down the scale</b>: the area round the ice-rink is grey and mucky with rows of

dirty blue and brown plastic seating and red carpet tiles. It's an unimpressive picture, but the show itself is an
unquestionably vast, polished global enterprise: the lights come from a firm in Texas, the people who make the
audio system are in California, but Montreal supplies the smoke effects; former British Olympic skater Robin
Cousins is now creative director for the company and conducts a vast master class to make sure they're ready for
the show's next performance.

The next day, as the music blares out from the sound system, the cast start to go through their routines under
Cousins' direction. Cousins says, The aim is to make sure they're all still getting to exactly the right place on the ice
at the right time - largely because the banks of lights in the ceiling are set to those places, and if the skaters are all
half a metre out they'll be illuminating empty ice. Our challenge,' he continues, 'is to produce something they can

sell in a number of countries at the same time. My theory is that you take those things that people want to see and
you give it to them, but not in the way they expect to see it. You try to twist it. And you have to find music that is
challenging to the skaters, because they have to do it every night.'

It may be a job which he took to pay the rent, but you can't doubt his enthusiasm. 'The only place you'll see
certain skating moves is an ice show,' he says, 'because you're not allowed to do<b> them</b> in competition. It's not in the

rules. So the ice show world has things to offer which the competitive world just doesn't.' Cousins knows what he's
talking about because he skated for the show himself when he stopped competing - he was financially unable to
retire. He learnt<b> the hard way</b> that you can't put on an Olympic performance every night. 'I'd be thinking, these people

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(23)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=23>

solution, he realised, was to give 75 per cent every night, rather than striving for the sort of twice-a-year excellence
which won him medals.

To be honest, for those of us whose only experience of ice-skating is watching top-class Olympic skaters, some
of the movements can look a bit amateurish, but then, who are we to judge? Equally, it's impossible not to be swept
up in the whole thing; well, you'd have to try pretty hard not to enjoy it.

<i><b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct</b></i>
<i><b>answer to each of the questions from 61 to 70.</b></i>

Being aware of one’s own emotions – recognizing and acknowledging feelings as they happen – is at the very
heart of Emotional Intelligence. And this awareness encompasses not only moods but also thoughts about those

moods. People who are able to monitor their feelings as they arise are less likely to be ruled by them and are thus
better able to manage their emotions.

Managing emotions does not mean suppressing them; nor does it mean giving free rein to every feeling.
Psychologist Daniel Goleman, one of several authors who have popularized the notion of Emotional Intelligence,
insisted that the goal is balance and that every feeling has value and significance. As Goleman said, “A life without
passion would be a dull wasteland of neutrality, cut off and isolated from the richness of life itself.” Thus, we
manage our emotions by expressing them in an appropriate manner. Emotions can also be managed by engaging
in activities that cheer us up, <b>soothe</b> our hurts, or reassure us when we feel anxious.

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(24)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=24>

ability to manage <b>them</b>. In other words, if two individuals are intensely angry, the one who is better able to
understand why he or she is angry will also be better able to manage the anger.

Self-motivation refers to strong emotional self-control, which enables a person to get moving and <b>pursue</b> worthy
goals, persist at tasks even when frustrated, and resist the temptation to act on impulse. Resisting impulsive
behavior is, according to Goleman, “the root of all emotional self-control.”

Of all the attributes of Emotional Intelligence, the ability to postpone immediate gratification and to persist in
working toward some greater future gain is most closely related to success – whether one is trying to build a
business, get a college degree, or even stay on a diet. One researcher examined whether this trait can predict a
child’s success in school. The study showed that 4-year-old children who can delay instant gratification in order to
advance toward some future goal will be “far superior as students” when they graduate from high school than will
4-year-olds who are not able to resist the impulse to satisfy their immediate wishes.

<b>Question 61:</b> Which of the following can we infer from paragraph 1?

<b>A. </b>If people pay attention to their feelings, they will not be able to manage them.

<b>B. </b>If people pay attention to their feelings, they can control their emotions better.

<b>C. </b>People who can manage their emotions will be controlled by them.

<b>D. </b>Some people can understand their feelings better than others.

<b>Question 62:</b> The word “<b>soothe</b>” in paragraph 2 could be best replaced by ______.

In the twentieth century , people depend on unlimited energy to power their everyday lives

.A wide range of energy -run devices and modern coveniences are taken for granted , and

although it may seem that we will never in danger of living without thoses coveniences,

the fact is that many supplies of energy are dwindling rapidly .Scientists are constantly

searching for new sources of power to keep modern society running .Whether future

populations will continue to enjoy the benefits of abundant energy will depend on this

sesearch .

Coal , oil , and natural gas supply modern civilization with most of its power

.However , not only are supplies of these fuels limited , but they are a major source of

pollution .If the energy demands of the future are to be met without seriously harming the

environment , existing alternative energy sources must be improved or further explored

and developed .These include nuclear , water , solar , wind , and geothermal power , as

well as energy from new , nonpolluting types of fuels .Each of these alternative , however ,

has advantages and disadvantages.

Nuclear power plants efficiently produce large amounts of electricity without

polluting the atmosphere ; however , they are costly to build and maintain , and they pose

the daunting problem of what to do with nuclear wastes .Hydroelectricity power is

inexpensive nd environmentally safe , but impractical for communities located far from

moving water .Harnessing energy from tides and waves has similar drawbacks . Solar

power holds great promise for the future but methods of collecting and concentrating

sunlight are as yet inefficient , as are mothods of harnessing wind power .

Every source of energy has its disadvantages .One way to minimize them is to use

less energy .Conservation efforts coupled with renewable energy resourses , such as

combination of solar , water , wind and geothermal energy and alternative fuels , such as

alcohol and hydrogen , wil ensure supplies of clean , affordable energy for humanity 's

future .

<b>50.</b>

A

<b>. people use energy without giving great thought to where it's coming from .</b>

<b>POLES APART </b>

many ways . Antarctica is a high , ice-covered land-mass . In the Artic the landmass are

grouped around the ice-covered Artic Ocean .

Largely because of this difference , the climate of the two areas is very different .

Antarctica is the coldest area in the world .On the average it is about 30 degrees colder

than the Artic .At the South Pole , nearly 10,000 feet high ,monthly mean temperature run

well below rezo .Only in coastal regions do temperatures sometimes rise about freezing in

the summer ( December to March ) In contrast , near the North Pole monthly mean

temperatures often rise above freezing .

At both poles , daily temperatures may drop far below the monthly mean .At the

American South Pole Station , winter temp[eratures sometimes fall below - 100 degrees

Fahrenheit .Elsewhere , on higher parts of the south polar plateau , even lower

temperatures are recorded .A temperature of -127 degrees Fahrenheit was measured in

August 1960 .It is the world's record low temperature .

Partly because of this climatic difference, the land animals and plants of the two

regions are very different . On the continent of Antarctica , there are very few plants .In the

Artic there are many plants .In some of the few ice-free areas of Antarctica , mosses ,

lichens , and algae are found .Penguins polulate Antarctic coastlines but do not exist in the

Artic .the land animals of the Artic are foxes , bears , reindeer , and lemmings .These

animals are unknown in the Antarctic .Old rock layers show that this " oppositeness "

between north and south extends far back into the early chapters of earth history .

Ice is the great feature of Antarctica .More than 4.5 million square miles of ice sheet

cover the area .Great rivers of ice , called glaciers . push down the mountains .Antarctica is

the storehouse of about 85 percent of the total world supply of ice .

The ice cap is very thick , averaging nearly 8,000 feet .At one spot . scientists have

found the distance from the surface to the rock undertneath the ice to be more than 13,000

feet .

<i><b>Read the following passage </b></i>

<i><b>and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the</b></i>

<i><b>correct answer to each of the questions from 46 to 55.</b></i>

Because the low latitudes of the Earth, the areas near the equator, receive more heat than the

latitudes near the poles, and because the nature of heat is to expand and move, heat is transported from the

tropics to the middle and high latitudes. Some of this heat is moved by winds and some by ocean currents,

and some gets stored in the atmosphere in the form of latent heat. The term “latent heat” refers to the

energy that has to be used to

<i><b>convert</b></i>

liquid water to water vapor. We know that if we warm a pan of

water on a stove, it will evaporate, or turn into vapor, faster than if it is allowed to sit at room temperature.

We also know that if we hang wet clothes outside in the summertime, they will dry faster than in winter,

when temperature are colder. The energy used in both cases to change liquid water to water vapor is

supplied by heat – supplied by

<i><b>the stove</b></i>

in the first case and by the Sun in the latter case. This energy is

not lost. It is stored as vapor in the atmosphere as latent heat. Eventually, the water stored as vapor in the

atmosphere will condense to liquid again, and the energy will be released to the atmosphere.

In the atmosphere, a large portion of the Sun’s incoming energy is used to evaporate water,

primarily in the tropical oceans. Scienctists have tried to quantify this proportion of the Sun’s energy. By

analyzing temperature, water vapor, and wind data around the globe, they have estimated the quantity to

be about 90 watts per square meter, or nearly 30 percent of the Sun’s energy. Once this latent heat is

stored within the atmosphere,

<i><b>it </b></i>

can be transported,

<i><b>primarily</b></i>

to higher latitudes, by

<i><b>prevailing</b></i>

, large –

scale winds. Or it can be transported vertically to higher levels in the atmosphere, where it forms clouds

and subsequent storms, which then release the energy back to the atmosphere.

<b>Question 46: The passage mainly discusses how heat_________</b>

<i><b>Read the following passage </b></i>

<i><b>and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the</b></i>

<i><b>correct answer to each of the questions from 56 to 65.</b></i>

Most people can remember a phone number for up to thirty seconds. When this short amount of

time elapses, however, the numbers are erased from the memory. How did the information get there in the

first place? Information that makes its way to the short term memory (STM) does so via the sensory

storage area. The brain has a filter which only allows stimuli that is of immediate interest to pass on to the

STM, also known as the working memory.

There is much debate about the capacity and duration of the short term memory. The most

accepted theory comes from George A. Miller, a cognitive psychologist who suggested that humans can

remember approximately seven chunks of information. A chunk is defined as a meaningful unit of

information, such as a word or name rather than just a letter or number. Modern theorists suggest that one

can increase the capacity of the short term memory by chunking, or classifying similar information

together. By organizing information, one can optimize the STM, and improve the chances of a memory

being passed on to long term storage

When making a conscious effort to memorize something, such as information for an exam, many

people engage in "rote rehearsal". By repeating something over and over again, one is able to keep a

memory alive. Unfortunately, this type of memory maintenance only succeeds if there are no

interruptions. As soon as a person stops rehearsing the information, it has the tendency to disappear.

When a pen and paper are not handy, people often attempt to remember a phone number by repeating it

aloud. If the doorbell rings or the dog barks to come in before a person has the opportunity to make a

phone call, he will likely forget the number instantly. Therefore, rote rehearsal is not an efficient way to

pass information from the short term to long term memory. A better way is to practice "

<b>elaborate</b>

rehearsal". This involves assigning semantic meaning to a piece of information so that it can be filed

along with other pre-existing long term memories.

not paid and their names are not published. They contribute to Wikipedia simply because they want to
share their knowledge.

Encyclopedias began in ancient times as collections of writings about all aspects of human
knowledge. The word itself comes from ancient Greek, and means “a complete general education”. Real
popularity for encyclopedias came in the nineteenth century in Europe and the United States, with the
publication of encyclopedias written for ordinary readers. With the invention of the CD-ROM, the same
amount of information could be put on a few computer discs. Then with the Internet, it became possible
to create an online encyclopedia that could be constantly updated, like Microsoft’s Encarta. However,
even Internet-based encyclopedias like Encarta were written by paid experts. At first, Wikipedia, the
<b>brainchild of Jimmy Wales, a businessman in Chicago, was not so different from these. In 2001, he had</b>
the idea for an Internet-based encyclopedia that would provide information quickly and easily to
everyone. Furthermore, that information would be available free, unlike other Internet encyclopedias at
that time.

But Wales, like everyone else, believed that people with special knowledge were needed to write
the articles, and so he began by hiring experts. He soon changed his approach, however, as it took

them a long time to finish their work. He decided to open up the encyclopedia in a radical new way, so
that everyone would have access not only to the information, but also to the process of putting this
information online. To do this, he used what is known as “Wiki” software (from the Hawaiian word for
“fast”), which allows users to create or alter content on web page. The system is very simple: When you
open the web site, you can simply search for information or you can log on to become a writer or editor of
articles. If you find an article that interests you – about your hometown, for example – you can correct it
or expand it. This process goes on until no one is interested in making any more changes.

Fiberscopes are one of the most are one of the most important outcomes of he science of fiber
optics. Fibers made of glass and transparent acrylic plastic are capable of conveying light energy, and
when thousands of these fibers are combined in what is called a fiberscope, they can transmit images.
The most common fiberscopes contain about 750,000 fibers, each 0.001 centimeter, or 10 microns, in
diameter. For certain uses, the diameter of the fiber may be as small as 5 microns.

Fiberscopes have a wide range of applications. In the medical field, physicians use fiberscopes to
examine internal organs and as an aid in delicate surgeries. Miniature probes have also been developed
to view muscle fiber, skin tissue, and blood cells. Fiberscopes have also found varied uses in industry,
particularly to inspect or control operations in inaccessible areas. Bundles of fiberscopes fused together
in a solid plate, called a faceplate, are being used in the manufacture of television tubes and other
cathode-ray tube devices.

The most far reaching applications of fiber-optic technology are in communication. Optical fibers
carry voice messages for telephone service. The sound of the voice is electronically broken down into
thousands of pulses per second, which causes a transmitting laser to send coordinated pulses of light
through the optical fibers. At the receiving end, the light pulses are converted to electrical signals and
the voice message is reconstructed. Light-wave communication systems can handle an immensely
greater number of telephone calls and television programs than the current system, and they will form
the basis of the “electronic superhighway” expected to crisscross the nation in the near future of the
information age.

<b>ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISTS</b>

Paul Watson is an environmental activist. He is a man who believes that he must do something,
not just talk about doing something. Paul believes in protecting endangered animals, and he protects
them in controversial ways. Some people think that Watson is a hero and admire him very much. Other
people think that he is a criminal.

On July 16th, 1979, Paul Watson and his crew were on his ship, which is called the Sea

Shepherd. Watson and the people who work on the Sea Shepherd were hunting on the Atlantic Ocean
near Portugal. However, they had a strange prey; instead of hunting for animals, their prey was a ship,
the Sierra. The Sea Shepherd found the Sierra, ran into it and sank it. As a result, the Sierra never
returned to the sea. The Sea Shepherd, on the other hand, returned to its home in Canada. Paul Watson
and his workers thought that they had been successful.

The Sierra had been a whaling ship, which had operated illegally. The captain and the crew of the
Sierra did not obey any of the international laws that restrict whaling. Instead, they killed as many whales
as they could, quickly cut off the meat, and froze it. Later, they sold the whale meat in countries where it
is eaten.

Paul Watson tried to persuade the international whaling commission to stop the Sierra. However,
the commission did very little, and Paul became impatient. He decided to stop the Sierra and other
whaling ships in any way that he could. He offered to pay $25,000 to anyone who sank any illegal
whaling ship, and he sank the Sierra. He acted because he believes that the whales must be protected.
Still, he acted without the approval of the government; therefore, his actions were controversial.

Paul Watson is not the only environmental activist. Other men and women are also fighting to
protect the Earth. Like Watson, they do not always have the approval of their governments, and like
Watson, they have become impatient. Yet, because of their concern for the environment, they will act to
protect it.

<i><b>Passage 1</b></i>

<b> Rachel Carson was born in 1907 in Springsdale, Pennsylvania. She studied biology in college and</b>

zoology at Johns Hopkins University, where she received her master’s degree in 1933. In 1936, she was

hired by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, where she worked most of her life.

Carson’s first book, Under the Sea Wind, was published in 1941. It received excellent reviews, but

sales were poor until it was reissued in 1952. In that year, she published The Sea Around Us, which

provided a fascinating look beneath the ocean’s surface, emphasizing human history as well as geology

and marine biology. Her imagery and language had a poetic quality. Carson consulted no less than 1,000

printed sources. She had voluminous correspondence and frequent discussions with experts in the field.

However, she always realized the limitations of her non-technical readers.

In 1962, Carson published Silence Spring, a book that sparked considerable controversy. It proved

how much harm was done by the uncontrolled,

<i><b>reckless</b></i>

use of insecticides. She detailed how they poison

the food supply of animals, kill birds, and contaminate human food. At that time, spokesmen for the

chemical industry mounted personal attacks against Carson and issued propaganda to indicate that her

findings were

<i><b>Passage 2</b></i>

After two decades of growing student enrollments and economic prosperity, business schools in the

United States have started to face harder times. Only Harvard's MBA School has shown a substantial

increase in enrollment in recent years. Both Princeton and Stanford have seen decreases in their enrollments.

Since 1990, the number of people receiving Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degrees, has

dropped about 3 percent to 75,000, and the trend of lower enrollment rates is expected to continue.

There are two factors causing this decrease in students seeking an MBA degree. The first one is that

many graduates of four-year colleges are finding that an MBA degree does not guarantee a plush job on

Wall Street, or in other financial districts of major American cities. Many of the entry-level management

jobs are going to students graduating with Master of Arts degrees in English and the humanities as well as

those holding MBA degrees. Students have asked the question, "Is an MBA degree really what I need to

be best prepared for getting a good job?" The second major factor has been the cutting of American

payrolls and the lower number of entry-level jobs being offered. Business needs are changing, and MBA

schools are struggling to meet the new demands.
