In 1850, when Levi Strauss arrived in California, he saw that workers needed strong clothes, so he began
to make them. These pants were very strong and did not wear out easily. The pants became very popular
immediately.

The word “ jeans” comes from the word “ Genoa”. Mr Strauss made the first jeans in the United States, but
the idea and the kind of cloth came from Europe. The names came from France and Italy.

5.Floods are the most common and widespread of all natural disasters. Most communities can experience some
kind of flooding after pouring rains, heavy thunderstorms or winter snow thaws. Floods can be slow or fast rising
but generally develop over a period of days. Dam failures are potentially the worst flood events. When a dam fails,
a gigantic quantity of water is suddenly let loose downstream, destroying anything in its path.

Floodwaters can be extremely dangerous. The force of six inches of swiftly moving water can knock people off
their feet. The best protection during a flood is to leave the area and go to shelter on higher ground.

Flash floods usually result from intense storms dropping large amounts of rain within a brief period. Flash floods
occur with little or no warning and can reach full peak in only a few minutes. Flash flood waters move at very fast
speeds and can roll boulders, tear out trees, destroy buildings, and obliterate bridges. Walls of water can reach

heights of 10 to 20 feet and generally are accompanied by a deadly cargo of debris. The best response to any signs
of flash flooding is to move immediately and quickly to higher ground.

7.ACCIDENTS IN THE HOME

Many thousands of children have accidents in their houses. As a result some children die.

The most common accidents are with fire and hot water. Small children often touch pots of boiling water on
the stove. The pots fall over and the hot water falls on the children and burns them. Some children like to play
with fire. They enjoy striking matches or throwing things on a fire to make it burn brightly. If a fire gets too big, it
gets out of control. Then the house catches fire. It is very dangerous to play with matches. When a child strikes a
match, the blame soon burns near his fingers. Then he drops the match on the floor. Many houses catch fire in this
way.

Some kinds of clothing burn very easily. Many children have been badly burned because they have stood
near a fire and their clothing has suddenly caught fire.

Although fire and hot water cause most accidents in their home, many children cut themselves with knives.
Others get an electric shock.

Some children are made very ill from taking their parents’ medicine. Many small children have to go to
hospital every year because they thought a box of medicine was a box of sweets.

11.The first real bicycle was made in Scotland. It was built in 1839 by a man named Macmillan. His bicycle had
two wheels like a modern bicycle. But it was much difficult to ride. It was heavier because it was made of wood
and iron. It did not have rubber tires like a modern bicycle. Instead, it had wooden wheels. This made it very
uncomfortable on bumpy roads. But Macmillan was lucky about one thing: he could not get a flat tire!

Bicycles are very popular today in many countries. Many people use bicycles for exercise. But exercise is
only one of the reasons why bicycles are popular. Another reason is money. Bicycles are not expensive to buy.
They do not need gas to make them go. They also are easy and cheap to fix. In cities, many people like bicycles

better go to the supermarket". A supermarket is a special kind of market. It is usually much larger than an
ordinary store. In a supermarket, you can buy all kinds of food, household, products and daily necessities.
In a store, a customer is served by a storekeeper but in a supermarket, the goods are arranged on rows of

41.In Britain, natural gas is the most popular fuel for heating homes, and for cooking. It is piped all over the
