Charles Dickens is one of the greatest novelists in English Literature. He was born
into a poor family in England. His father was a clerk in an office. It was a good job but he
always spent more moneythan he earned, so he was often in debt. When Dickens was
eleven years old, his father was put into prison because he could not pay his debts. At
the age of twelve, Dickens was sent to work in a factory labeling bottles for six shillings a
week.

When Dickens was sixteen, he worked for a newspaper, and soon became a good
journalist. He also wrote many short stories and novels about London’s life. Many of his
characters were poor and hungry people. Some of his novels have been translated into
many different languages. His two novels “Oliver Twist” and “David Copperfield” are
well-known all over the world.

Sydney is Australia’s most exciting city. The history of Australia begins here. In
1788 Captain Arthur Philips arrived in Sydney with 11 ships and 1624
passengers from Britain (including 770 prisoners). Today there are about 3.6

the South Pacific and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. In Sydney,

At radio station WJLT in Fort Wayne, Indiana, letters poured in for the Christmas
wish contest. The workers had fun reading about all the different presents that boys
and girls from across the city wanted for Christmas. When Amy’s letter arrived at the
radio station, manager Lee Tobin read it carefully. He knew cerebral palsy was a
muscle disorder that might confuse Amy’s schoolmates who didn’t understand her

disability. He thought it would be good for the people in Fort Wayne to hear about this
special third-grader and her unusual wish. Mr. Tobin called up the local newspaper.

The next day, a picture of Amy and her letter to Santa made the front page of
the News Sentinel. The story spread quickly. All across the country, newspapers and
radio and television stations reported the story of the little girl in Fort Wayne, Indiana,
who asked for such a simple yet remarkable regular at the Hagadorn house.
Envelopes of all sizes addressed to Amy arrived daily from children and adults all
across the nation. They came filled with holiday greetings and words of
encouragement.
