The first robots were invented in the 1920s. Robots have appeared in many
American films. In some films, they are stronger, faster and cleverer than people.
In real life, robots are mainly used in factories. They do some dangerous and
difficult jobs for humans.

Robots also help disabled people, for example, blind people. Today many blind
people have a guide dog to help them. In the future, guide dogs might be robot dogs.
One kind of robot guide dogs has wheels. It moves in front of the owner. It is very
clever. It knows the speed of its owner’s walk. The owner wears a special belt. This belt
sends instructions to the owner from the dog, such as “Stop here”, “Turn left” or “Turn
right”.

In the United States, another kind of robot helps disabled people to take care of
themselves in their daily life. The robot hears the sound of its owner’s voice. It follows
instructions such as “Turn the page” or “make a cup of coffee”.

Robots are also used in American hospitals. They can do simple jobs. At one
hospital, for example, a robot takes meals from the kitchen to patient’s rooms. It never
gets lost because this robot has a map of the hospital in its computer memory.

Though robots can help people in many ways, they will never take the place of
humans.

Traditions, sayings, beliefs, language, and values are just a few things that make up
our culture. Culture is the framework in which families are structured. It shapes our
expectations and ideals. Culture plays a part in the meaning of marriage and our roles as
husbands, wives, children and parents.

Understanding cultural differences and similarities related to marriage is important.
Culture affects the roles that spouses take within marriages, the age at marriage and the
number of children a couple have, the meaning of divorce, cohabitation and non-marital
childbearing, and the way parents raise children. Understanding how relationships and

marriages vary across cultural contexts, and how they are similar, we will be able to
identify the unique ways that marriages and family life affect people of various cultures.
As a result, we will be able to help families and sustain happy marriages.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the American educational system was
desperately in need of reform. Private schools existed, but only for the very rich. There
were very few public schools because of the strong sentiment that children who would
grow up to be laborers should not “waste” their time on education but should instead
prepare themselves for their life’s work. It was in the face of this public sentiment that
educational reformers set about their task. Horace Mann, probably the most famous of
the reformers, felt that there was no excuse in a republic for any citizen to be
uneducated. As Superintendent of Education in the state of Massachusetts from 1837 to
1848, he initiated various changes, which were soon matched in other school districts
around the country. He extended the school year from five to six months and improved
the quality of teachers by instituting teacher education and raising teacher salaries.
Although these changes did not bring about a sudden improvement in the educational
system, they at least increased public awareness as to the need for a further strengthening
of the system.

From approximately 1920 to 1946 the United States departed from the
international rules for water polo by adopting for play a loosely inflated ball that could
be gripped in one hand and carried toward the goal. Opposing players usually attempted
to seize the ball carriers, wrestle them under water and render them helpless from loss of
breath. This rough style of play virtually disappeared by 1946. Since that time traditional
water polo has grown rapidly in North America, especially as a college sport. It is
particularly popular in southern California and other parts of the West.

Women have played water polo since the Game’s early days, but participation
was not widespread until the 1960s. In 1961 United States Water Polo established a

It is very important to have healthy teeth. Good teeth help us to chew our food.
They also help us to look nice. How does a tooth go bad? The decay begins in a little
crack in the enamel covering of the tooth. This happens after germs and bits of food
have collected there. Then the decay slowly spreads inside the tooth. Eventually,
poison goes into the blood, and we may feel quite ill.

How can we keep our teeth healthy? Firstly, we ought to visit our dentist twice a
year. He can fill the small holes in our teeth before they destroy the teeth. He can
examine our teeth to check that they are growing in the right way. Unfortunately,
many people wait until they have toothache before they see a dentist. Secondly, we
should brush our teeth with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day
-once after breakfast and -once before we go to bed. We can also use wooden
toothpicks to clean between our teeth after a meal. Thirdly, we should eat food that is

good for our teeth and our body: milk, cheese, fish, brown bread, potatoes, red rice,
raw vegetables and fresh fruit. Chocolates, sweets, biscuits and cakes are bad,
especially when we eat them between meals. They are harmful because they stick to
our teeth and cause decay.

A combination of water, salt, air pollution, sun, sand, and wind is destroying the
huge statue just outside Cairo. This five-thousand-year-old statue, which has the body
of a lion and the face of a human being, is too badly damaged to be completely saved.
First, there is not a good drainage system around the statue and too much water has
been running into the stone statue for several years. As a result, tiny pieces of salt
have been left on the stone and have damaged it. Second, air pollution from the
increasing amount of traffic in Cairo is also destroying the ancient statue. The air is
so full of poisonous gases that it is damaging the statue even faster. Third, the statue
is being destroyed by extremes of temperature. The air is very cold at night, but
during the day the stone of the statue becomes very hot under the strong sunlight.
Other natural forces such as severe sandstorms attack the statue as well. Finally, the
tourists who visit the statue every day also cause a lot of damage to it.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 6 to 10.

By adopting a few simple techniques, parents who read to their children can
considerably increase their children's language development. It is surprising, but true.
How parents talk to their children makes a big difference in the children's language
development. If a parent encourages the child to actively respond to what the parent is
reading, the child's language skills increase.

A study was done with two or three-year-old children and their parents. Half of
the thirty children participants were in the experimental study; the other half acted as the
control group. In the experimental group, the parents were given a two-hour training

session in which they were taught to ask open-ended questions rather than yes-no
questions. For example, the parent should ask, "What is the doggy doing?" rather than,
"Is the doggy running away?" Experimental parents were also instructed how to expand
on their children's answer, how to suggest alternative possibilities, and how to praise
correct answers.

At the beginning of the study, the children did not differ on levels of language
development, but at the end of one month, the children in the experimental group were
5.5 months ahead of the control group on a test of verbal expression and vocabulary.
Nine months later, the children in the experimental group still showed an advance of 6
months over the children in the control group.

6. Parents can give great help to their children's language development by _____ them.
A. adopting B. responding to C. experimenting D. reading to

A. study many experiments B. use yes-no questions

C. give correct answers D. ask open-ended questions

9: What was the major difference between the control group and the experimental
one in the study?

A. The training that parents received. B. The books that were read.
C. The age of the children. D. The number of participants.
10. What conclusion can be drawn from this passage?

A. Children who read actively always act six months earlier than those who don't.
B. Children's language skills increase when they are required to respond actively.

C. Two or three-year-old children can be taught to read actively.

D. The more children read, the more intelligent they become.
