Today, many researchers are concerned with the information sent by communication that is
(1)...(depend) of and different from (2)... (verb) information; namely, the non-verbal
communication. Verba communication is organized by language; non-verbal communication is not.

Communication is the transfer of (3)... (inform) from one person tc another. Most of us spend about 75
percent of our waking hours communicating our (4)...(know), thoughts, and ideas to others. However,

most of us fail to realize that a great deal of our communication is of a non-verbal form as opposed to the oral and
(5)... (write) forms. Non-verbal communicatior includes (6)... (face) expressions, eye contact,
tone of voice, body posture and motions, and positioning within groups. It may also include the way we wear our
clothes or the (7)... (silent) we keep.

In person-to-person communications our messages are sent on two level (8)... (simultaneous). If the
non-verbal cues and the (9)... (speak) message are incongruous, the flow of communication is hindered.
Right or wrong, the receiver of the communication tends to base the (10)... (intend) of the sender on the
non-verbal cues he receives.

5. Fill each gap in the passage with a suitable word from the box.

conversation, end, introduced, listening, manners, message, offending, person, questions, treat

In today's fast-paced business world, telephone communication is more important than ever. By learning how to
practise telephone (1)..., you will find that people treat you with more respect. Here are some cell phone
etiquette tips.

Plan the call. Write down key objectives before making a call. By doing so, you are showing respect to the
(2)...you are calling.

Be polite. Be careful to keep your tone of voice modulated and never indicate impatience at having to leave a
(3)...Get to the point. Once you are successful in reaching your party and have

(4)...yourself, get to the point. Let the person know why you are calling and use your notes to keep your
agenda clear.

Listen. Allow the person you are calling to ask (5)...and convey his or her point of view. Do not
interrupt, and answer questions honestly and directly. Indicate that you are (6)...by saying, "I see," "1
understand," or simply, "Yes,".

Know when to end the call. Sometimes the person you have called may seem to want to extend the
(7)..., and you will need to politely conclude the conversation without (8)... the individual. Use
positive statements such as "I know you are busy, and want to thank you for your time," to politely signal the
(9)...of the conversation.

Remember to always (10)... people the way you would like to be treated yourself, and you can't go
wrong!

10.

1. Just as in your real everyday life, manners are important on the Internet as well.
2. You can save yourself a large amount of grief if you follow a few simple rules.
3. On the Internet, all capitals signify you are yelling so do not capitalize all letters.

4. Be careful because everything you send is permanent somewhere; people can post it, keep it for later use or
whatever.

5. What you write is the only way people know who you are because they can't see you unless you post your
picture on the net.

6. Your words are the only way to communicate so poor spelling indicates you are not very bright.

7. You should read what you have written before hitting the "send" button to make sure you have made no
mistakes.

8. Use symbols carefully. If you think something might sound sarcastic, you may put a smiley face at the end of
the sentence, like this.
