1. INTRODUCTION:
1.1. Reasons to choose the topic:
Vietnam is on the way to integrate with the world and regional countries,
the country is transforming itself in a market economy. English is an important
language and a bridge to developed countries, giving us access to the latest
human achievements in science, technology, social culture and mutual
understanding. Therefore, it requires our country to have a human resource in
addition to being professionally trained with a high quality system to meet
international communication requirements. Because of such a requirement, at
the high school level, English is one of the official subjects and compulsory
graduation exams.
Reading exercises are one of the most important parts for students when
they prepare for high school exam. In order to make this exercise part effective
and successful, learners have to use a lot of background knowledge and skills to

understand what the text expresses correctly. Good English reading will
encourage students to be passionate, confident in learning more and reinforce
other skills such as speaking, phonics, vocabulary, grammar ..
Actually learning English reading skills well, foreign language learners must
have a regular, long-term listening practice with different reading forms and
content.
However, teaching English in general and teaching reading skills in
particular in Vietnam in the past few years has encountered many difficulties,
such as a unified textbook, the general level of teachers is not uniform, old,
ineffective teaching methods, lack of teaching facilities, lack of communication
practice environment has led to low quality of teaching and learning. Students
lack learning motivation.
From the above facts, I realized that the renewal of general English
teaching methods and reading skills at high school level in particular is
necessary, contributing to the implementation of educational goals and
developing Vietnamese people in the period of industrialization and
modernization of the country and also contributing to improving the quality of
human resources for the country in the process of integrating into the world
economy.
1.2. Purposes of researching:
Through the years of directly teaching English in high school, I have realized the
fact that the majority of high school students, especially in mountainous areas,
are afraid to study English, often feeling heavy. during school hours. Therefore,
the lessons to prepare for the National High School exam are a difficult
challenge for them. Especially the "Reading" section exercise - Read the
following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
confirm the answer to each of the questions. Students are always afraid to do the
most part of this exercise, so they often do the last thing or have them leave to
wait for luck.
So, how to get students interested in learning foreign languages,

particularly English. How do I learn English to become a class that I look
2

forward to and do not have to wait impatiently for my time out of boredom?
How can you read and understand simple English sentences naturally? It is a
number of my concerns in the teaching process, so I always try to find and think
to find the most effective solutions to make my lecture attractive to students, It
is also aimed at improving the quality of subject teaching on the basis of
improving teaching methods, taking learners as a center.
Reading comprehension form in high school exam in English The
subject of English "scares" students with long and short sentences with strange
words and difficult ways of writing. Therefore, to conquer this form, we must
have appropriate methods.
Stemming from practical teaching for many years as a teacher of English, I
boldly draw some experience to write experience with the topic: "Some tips to
help students interested and doing well in reading National High School exam
review”
1.3 Research subjects:
Conducting research and reviewing the students in the process of doing their
English reading exercises at Thach Thanh 1 High School during the period from
20017 to 2019. But focusing on research on deep and milk Centralized treatment
of errors for control results is performed on students in grade 12 in the 2018 2019 school year. so my research subject is:
+ Most of Thach Thanh 1 high school students have studied high school English
program.
+ Skills to read English texts and documents.
+ Methods of reading reading.
+ About learning and using how to guess the meaning and understand the
vocabulary in a text
1.4. Research methods:

Through many years of teaching, I have found that it is very difficult for
students to learn English, students often make mistakes in methods of doing
English reading exercises. Through the learning and training of students, I pay
attention to listening to how students use their skills to do the reading then I
select the mistakes that they often make. Similarly, I conduct in many classes
with the same sentences and structures to find out how to solve each error in the
easiest way to remember. 2018 school year - 2019 is the school year to continue
to apply new methods in teaching and preparing lectures, giving students many
opportunities to practice, so help me realize that they need to practice many
possible topics Make reading easier than in previous years and students also
have the opportunity to correct themselves right away through talking to you or
practice on the spot through activities in pairs, in groups . The teacher observes
and listens to the students express their content in front of their friends, the
teachers, through the lessons. Teachers discover, record, find a solution,
sometimes needing to consult colleagues to find the right solution for the wrong
way.
3

So I studied the material, read the references to reinforce the method of teaching
students to do the reading more effectively. Besides that, I also surveyed the
actual situation, studied the students' learning situation to guide and help them to
practice on using English vocabulary in practice.
2. Contents of experience initiatives
2.1. The theoretical basis of the experience initiative.
. The purpose of teaching foreign languages is not only to provide students
with the knowledge of that language, but the ultimate purpose of teaching foreign
languages in general and English in particular is to teach students the ability to
communicate by English, and apply it in the process of studying and taking
exams. Applicability of students is demonstrated through the skills: listening,

speaking, reading and writing. English reading skills of students are formed
through a process of learning and practicing in
With new and positive teaching methods, teachers play the role of directing
and controlling students to work during the lesson.
In order to conduct an effective lesson, teachers need to perform well the
following basic elements:
- Choose and flexibly use listening techniques appropriate to each lesson
content.
- Organizing and controlling classes, allocating reasonable time.
- Proficiently using means and teaching aids for teaching and listening.
- Create appropriate teaching aids for teaching.
- Inspire, attract, attract students.
2.2. Actual situation before applying experience initiatives
+ Difficulties for students:
The level of students is uneven. As mentioned above, there are many
students with deep and wide knowledge of English but many students have not
heard well even some of the most basic communication questions such as asking
age, home , accommodation.
Some of the topics mentioned in the program are quite strange for
mountainous students: Technology and you, Undersea World, Conservation,
National Parks, Cities.
Some students have very little lower grade vocabulary so there are not
enough words or words to complete the Tasks.
+ Problems of students:
Most students are good and conscious of learning.
Classroom atmosphere is very lively when students meet familiar and familiar
topics such as "School talks", "Music", "Films and cinema", "The World Cup" ...
Because the level of students is not equal, for a limited time, students have
completed the requirements of the reading exercise but there are also students
who have only completed 50% of the work and even 30% .

2.3. Innovative experiences or solutions used to solve problems
For teachers:
In order for a lesson to be read well, the teacher should take the following steps:
4

- Study thoroughly the lesson content from the National High School
curriculum, teachers' books:
Textbooks, SGVs are an important basis, for teachers to plan their
teaching for lessons, the study of skills and syllabus will help teachers organize
and control teaching periods in the right focus and focus; allocate time for steps,
activities in a scientific way.
- Study the purpose of the lesson requirements:
The purpose and requirement of the lesson is the goal that both
teachers and students need to achieve after the lesson period. For lesson reading,
usually the purpose, the requirement of the lesson is to help students practice
and develop their skills: Reading, after finishing the reading exercise, the
students understand the main content of the listening lesson. and make certain
language requests or exercises.
- Painting illustrations (self-created or purchased): to introduce and practice
new lessons is required. No illustrations are required to ensure high
aesthetics, but there must be a close relationship with the lesson content.
If you cannot afford to buy, you can enlarge the illustration in the
textbook.
- Need to build a reasonable, scientific lesson. Teachers need to plan their
teacher activities, game activities, time for activities, requirements of each
exercise, and student response options. Prepare handouts, redesign hard
and long exercises. - Discuss, discuss teaching plans in professional
teams, with colleagues. The effectiveness of listening lesson will be
improved if the teaching plan is discussed with colleagues before

teaching, this job not only brings positive results for teaching period but
other skills also have results. so.
+ For students:
The teacher asks students to be well prepared for the next lesson by :
- Giving a system of open questions about the lesson that they are about to
learn so that students have time to think, learn materials ...
- Ask students to do some exercises related to the content of the lesson, but
for the other skills lessons there are also results like that.
- Encouraging and motivating students to be confident, proactive and
creative to raise issues and questions related to the lesson content.
2.4. Good implementation of the process of teaching readings
+ Step 1: Skimming for content
Aims: With reading comprehension, the first step is to read the first paragraph
to learn the basic topic of the reading. Then skim the first and last sentences of
the paragraphs, trying to extract the basic content in each paragraph.
KNOW WHAT YOU WANT
Before you start skimming, ask yourself what you want to get from the book or
article under your nose. Think of two or three terms that describe what you want
to know, and as you skim, keep an eye out for those two or three terms.
5

Aimlessly skimming with no particular purpose can cause drowsiness, and
eventually, sleep.
READ VERTICALLY AS WELL AS HORIZONTALLY
When skimming, you move your eyes vertically as much as you move your eyes
horizontally. In other words, you move your eyes down the page as much as you
move them from side to side. Skimming is a bit like running down stairs. Yes,
you should take one step at a time, and running down stairs is reckless, but you
also get there faster by running.

THINK LIKE THE AUTHOR
Every article, book, and Web page is written to make a point of some kind, and
if you can detect the author’s strategies for making his point, you can separate
the important from the unimportant material in the course of your reading. You
can focus on the original, meaningful material and skip over the material that
just supports the author’s argument without advancing it.
Detecting the author’s strategies requires you to put yourself in his place.
Besides noticing the material on the page, notice how he presents the material.
See whether you can recognize how the author places background material,
secondary arguments, tangential information, and just plain frippery.
PREREAD BEFORE YOU START SKIMMING
Examine an article before you read it. By prereading an article before you skim,
you can pinpoint the parts of the article that require your undivided attention and
the parts that you can skip.
+ Step 2: Solve vocabulary questions.
Aims: These sentences require "scanning" skills.
After having the most general view of the passage, look at the questions:
Form 1: Reference questions.
Question : Which choice does the word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. His spelling
B. His chair
C. His French
D. His name
Question The word “them” in paragraph 3 refers to _____.
A. words
B. slang phrases
C. memories
D. the majority
Question : The word "it" in line 22 refers to ___________.
A. writing poetry

B. becoming famous
C. earning a living
D. attracting readers
With form 1, we look at the sentence immediately before the sentence with the
word bold, easily find the answer. To be sure, please change the answer back to
see if there is any change.
6

Form 2: Vocabulary questions.
Question : The word “institution” in paragraph 3 refers to _____.
A. the presidency of the United States B. American society

D. lessen
Question : The word "succeeding" in line 19 is closest to ___________.

B. prospering
C. diverse
D. later
• As for form 2, because each word has a lot of meaning we need to read the
whole sentence to determine the definition that the expression represents, from
which to choose the right answer. Well, if the word is "new" then read the
sentence to guess, or try to match the 4 answers to see if this works.
SPECIAL ATTENTION
See if the question is nearly meaningless or antonym, avoid being distracted and
choose the wrong answer.
+Step3: : Use the information questions in the lesson.
Aims: A cursory reading of all the main ideas of Essay, not going into the
content of any paragraph. You do this reading quickly by reading through the
title to see the article content, reading topic and indexing sentences because the
paragraphs in English are mainly written in two ways: interpretation and
inductive, attention more on important nouns to master the main content.
Form 1: Factual questions:
According to the passage Why/ what/ when/ where…?
Example:
Question : According to the passage, why did Jackson oppose the Bank of the

imply?
A. Duncan Fife and his father had the same first name.
B. Duncan Fife worked for his father in Scotland.
C. Duncan Fife and his father were in the same business.
D. Duncan Phyfe made over 100 different kinds of tables.
Form 2: Negative factual information.
 Except…
 Not mentioned…

 LEAST likely
Example:
Question : Which of the following could NOT be inferred about Andrew
Jackson?
A. He served his country throughout his life
B. He supported democratic reforms.
C. He inspired populist politics
D. He was president during a violent war.
Question : Which of the following could NOT be inferred about Andrew
Jackson?
A. He served his country throughout his life
B. He supported democratic reforms
C. He inspired populist politics

Question : The author mentions all of the following as requirements for slang
expressions to be created EXCEPT _____.

Question : In his business, Duncan Phyfe used all of the following
EXCEPT________.
A. division of labor
B. an assembly line
C. continental designs
D. the least expensive materials
To do this lesson, we have to pay attention to the key words of the
question, and find the paragraph containing that information, read the passage
and the question to find the correct answer.
A very interesting thing is that the question is arranged according to the
paragraph order so if the above sentence is in paragraph 2, then the sentence is
found in paragraph 3 onwards. This saves considerable time.
ATTENTION
Almost all answers will be expressed in a different way, so if there are answers
that contain the same words in the paragraph but express the content incorrectly.
It is possible to exclude that answer.
+ Tep 4: questions about content.
Now we have a basic understanding of the reading, quickly skimming the lesson
once (skimming), stringing everything and finishing the questions about the
remaining content.

Remember:
• The topic must be an idea that covers the whole reading.
• The topic cannot be the meaning or the main idea of any paragraph in the text.
The content questions are likely to be very tricky, so once again I would like to
repeat this tip: "NEVER CHOOSE 1 ANSWER WHEN NOT EXCLUDING
THE LESSEST 2 RESPONSE".
Experience in reading comprehension test
Reading comprehension exercises to test the ability to read visually with
information to choose the correct option for questions about that reading. There
11

are requirements for main information (main idea), which get detailed
information (details).
Usually the questions require the candidate to choose the right
information about the data and the data (fact and data) included in the lesson
may also have more difficult questions, requiring students to understand the
meaning (implied idea) or the opinion, opinion (opinion) of the author on the
issue raised in the reading.
There are many different views on how to do lesson, here are some suggestions:
Quickly read a turn from start to finish. The purpose of this reading is to

understand the topic of the article and its outline. While reading, skip the new
word, not even understanding a sentence.
Read the questions carefully and all options A, B, C, and D, then
determine where in the reading there is information to help choose the best
option.
When choosing an answer, always check step 2 again to make sure that you
have the right information for the question you are answering.
In order to choose the right answer plan, first of all, it should eliminate the
wrong plan (data, data ...) the plan has no information in the reading, the plan is
only partially correct to remain. The final sentence is the best.
It is necessary to thoroughly analyze all the options that the person has
proposed, because the best answer may be only one word compared to the other
options.
When making the best choice, you should not use your knowledge of
the issues discussed (or knowledge not covered in the reading). The best option
is the most accurate answer based on the information contained in the reading.
With the change of English exam structure, students should understand the
knowledge they have learned. Learn foreign languages in a "long-lasting
rainstorm" every day to practice and accumulate a bit. Learning foreign
languages on the basis of training 4 skills "listening - speaking - reading writing", and doing many basic to advanced exercises, mastering some
communication situations from the situations of daily life as:
- How to ask for directions
- How to respond to a compliment to more complex situations.
Note: How to arrange supporting sentences in a paragraph
Depending on the problem, the writer can arrange supporing words in 1 of the
following order:
From the most important details to the least important.
From the least important details to the most important details (as opposed to way
1).
According to the chronological order (what happens before the previous story,

what happens after the following).
According to the order of the work to be done (for example, if you are
instructing others to cook, you will only follow them to follow the steps: First,
remove the rice into the pot. Secondly, roll the rice. Third, remove the pot. In the
12

rice cooker (if cooking with a rice cooker) Fourth, plug the plug into the power
outlet Thursday, turn on the cooking switch.
In order of space. Often this order is only applied in a description of the
scene / place. For example, the topic requires you to describe your learning
corner.
In this case, you can start from any position: from outside to inside, from inside
to outside, from left to right, from right to left, from bottom to top, from top to
bottom ... depending on the angle. degrees that you observe to describe.
Finally, you can end the paragraph with an conclusioning sentence. Usually the
sentence is done by rewriting the topic sentence in a different form only.
II: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
2.1.
Control
results
In the actual teaching process, I have conducted empirical research on the
renewal of 11th grade English teaching methods - Standard program. The
following results: * Experimental: I choose 4 classes 11B2, 11B3, 11B5, 11B7
and divided into 2 groups: Experimental group: Grade 11B2, 11B3; Control

After applying this innovation method for students in grades 11B2, 11B3, 11B5,
11B7 and through this experiment, I noticed in the lesson if applying the
innovation of reading method to students then I myself have achieved
satisfactory results as follows:
- Most students can understand lessons right in class.
- The children showed interest in learning, confident in reading exercises.
- Students are no longer afraid to do reading exercises.
- Students like to do this lesson.
- Students have learned some skills and how to do exercises.
- Students' reading skills have improved.
- Create many situations that stimulate the students' logical thinking.
- Helping children improve their knowledge of culture, society and science
through readings.
I realize that using the innovative method to teach my students is a right
direction that can bring about quite effective results in the process of teaching
and learning high school foreign languages in current conditions.
2.
Experiences

drawn
during
the
implementation
process
After successfully applying this topic I myself have achieved remarkable results
and valuable experiences for myself as follows:
13

2.1. Teachers must always create a foreign language environment during
school hours and must use English as the primary language for communication.
Depending on grades and students, teachers can use short, simple, easy-tounderstand, easy-to-remember and easy-to-memorize English sentences in
reading exercises in QuocGia high school exam.
Teachers should always encourage students to use the knowledge they have
learned to use in communication.
Teachers should integrate listening and speaking activities in the form of
"playing - learning".
While at home, guide the children to practice reading newspapers or stories in
English via radio, television, listening to songs in English ...
By creating such foreign language environments, students can practice reading
skills and other communication skills well.
2.2. Teachers need the attraction, attract students to the content of the
reading in the form of activities, appropriate reading and teaching techniques for
each stage of a reading lesson.
2.3. Teachers need to choose, use and coordinate flexible teaching
methods and techniques in the process of teaching hours. During the practice
stage after listening, in addition to the textbook exercises, teachers need to
provide appropriate and highly practical exercises.
2.4. During listening time, give students the opportunity to develop their

reading skills as well as practice it simply. Set out careful activities so that
students know the language and how to accomplish the task successfully
assigned.
2.5. Try to personalize as much personal activity as possible. This makes
listening and speaking practice practical and encouraging students to
communicate. Activities in groups and pairs must be organized scientifically.
Always ask why this activity must be done in pairs, in groups, if the goal is
achieved.
2.6. Teachers must have improved lectures to suit each student's level,
enabling weak students to confidently participate in exciting classes. Above all,
there is not much control over the class. If students are practicing and teachers
ask questions, students will not have the opportunity to practice. Summary: In
order to implement a lesson on how to make effective reading, teachers should
note the following issues:
- Context needs to be clearly introduced.
- Need to create opportunities for students to practice the necessary skills
while reading such as guessing the word, guessing the content in the context,
reading and combining the question information with the reading.
14

- For some songs with more complicated content, teachers try to apply
well the 3 steps of listening comprehension to facilitate students' ability to read
and understand language.
- Skills need to be flexibly coordinated in the process of reading.
3. Proposals
Teaching students to do high school exam reading is a difficult activity in
language teaching, so firstly the teacher needs to have proper awareness about
the skill as well as the steps to take a lesson in the right way. In order to get
students to be the center, teachers must improve teaching methods and

professional knowledge in many ways such as self-study in textbooks, programs
on the Internet, on television, learning through colleagues, participating attend
