Switchboard Cable
Shielded and Unshielded Switchboard Cables for Faster
Assemblies and Easier Installation
For cable assemblers and end users of cable
assemblies, it is important to consider many factors
when choosing a switchboard cable. As has been the
case in recent years, price seems to dictate which
products will be used for communications applications
without much consideration for features and benefits that
KRONE 25-Pair Shielded Switchboard Cable for assemblies
and central office wiring of POTS, T1 and Basic Rate ISDN
could offset the slightly higher price of top-quality cable.
KRONE Switchboard Cables are unique in a world of
“me too” products designed to meet cost targets with
little or no thought given to specifications. KRONE
Switchboard Cables are high quality, competitively
priced cables, that offer all the features and benefits for
central office and outside plant applications where cable
assemblies are required.
KRONE 25-Pair Unshielded Switchboard Cable
KRONE Switchboard Cables are designed for
terminating outside plant networks to digital switching
and transmission equipment at the service provider’s
central offices, outdoor cabinets and at the customer’s
premises. These products offer enhanced cross-talk
performance in 85- and 100-Ohm designs for supporting
Digital Subscriber Line (xDSL) technologies and
traditional Digital Signaling (DS1/1C/S) technologies.
The enhanced cross-talk performance improves the

network support for shared-sheath technologies.
KRONE Switchboard Cables have been specified by
some of the largest DSLAM and ASAM manufacturers in
the world for deployment of DSL. KRONE cables were
selected due to high-quality, adherence to standards of
tolerance, and competitive prices for use throughout
major service provider networks in North America.

Features and Benefits of
KRONE 25-Pair Standard
Switchboard Cable
Diameter
KRONE attributes its small cable diameter to its cabling
process. The double binder wraps the conductors four
times to the left and then four times to the right holding
conductors tightly together as they are combined to form
a compact cable. The core diameter of the KRONE 25-
pair Shielded Switchboard Cable (with shielding tape) is
0.285 inches or an average of 12% smaller than the
competition. The core diameter of the KRONE 25-pair
Unshielded Switchboard Cable is 0.255 inches or an
average of 7% smaller than the competition.

(Unshielded)

In many cable assemblies, the diameter of a 25-pair
switchboard cable must be less than 0.365 inches. The
overall diameter of the KRONE 25-pair Shielded
Switchboard Cable is 0.355 inches or 8% smaller than
the competition. The overall diameter of the KRONE 25-
pair Unshielded Switchboard Cable is 0.320 inches or an
average of more than 13% smaller than the competition.
Cross-Sectional Area
In looking at the significant diameter difference between
KRONE and competitive cables, this size difference
becomes even more apparent when comparing cross-
sectional area (CSA). It is no wonder that
manufacturers, value-added resellers and cable
assembly firms specify KRONE cable when space-
savings and flexibility are required.

The cross-sectional area of the KRONE 25-pair Shielded

or an average of 24% smaller than the competition. The
cross-sectional area of the KRONE 25-pair Unshielded

13% smaller than the competition. The overall cross-
sectional area of the KRONE 25-pair Shielded and
Unshielded Switchboard Cables is 0.0315 inches or 15%
smaller than the competition.
Roundness
In addition to maintaining tight diameters, the KRONE
cabling process also allows for overall roundness of the
cable. The double binder wraps the conductors tightly
as they first come together producing a more round
cable. The roundness of all KRONE Switchboard
Cables is not affected by spooling the cable onto reels,
as is the case with the competition.

Each cable sample was taken from a spooled reel.
Maintaining roundness of the cable eases
connectorization in cable assemblies. KRONE cables
help reduce assembly time, shrink-wrap and other
material scrap due to their consistent roundness.

Concentricity of Jacket
Concentricity is defined as the ability to maintain
consistent jacket thickness around its circumference.
The concentricity of the jacket for the KRONE 25-pair
Unshielded and Shielded Switchboard Cables is 90%,
which is excellent when compared to the competition.

Standards of tolerance are critical to the

exception. This cable dimension allows for faster
assemblies, reduced scrap, and easier installation.

Features and Benefits of
KRONE 25-Pair Unshielded Enhanced
Performance Switchboard (EPS) Cable
Diameter
While KRONE Standard Switchboard Cables exceed
industry standards and customer expectations, we live
up to our name for innovation through development of a
100-Ohm Enhanced Performance Switchboard (EPS)
Cable. This higher-performing cable with 24 AWG solid
tinned copper conductors has the same overall diameter
when compared to Competitor 1’s standard 85-Ohm

switchboard cable.

Features and Benefits of
KRONE 25-/50-/100-Pair Unshielded High
Performance Switchboard (HPS) Cables
KRONE switchboard cables are chosen time and again
for their excellent quality, performance, size and
flexibility in many applications, including DSL. Because
of the rapid deployment of DSL in smaller configurations
requiring even smaller cable assemblies, KRONE
developed the 25-/50-/100-Pair Unshielded High
Performance Switchboard (HPS) Cables. These cables,
which are even smaller than KRONE Enhanced
Performance Switchboard (EPS) cables, are excellent
for installations where space is limited and the
dimensions of the enclosure must be maintained.
Diameter
To maintain tight dimensions, a technician may be
tempted to remove the jacket of the cable to be installed.
However, to avoid the problematic issues of unprotected
pairs and difficult cable management, KRONE designed
the HPS cables to reduce the overall diameter, maintain
cable safety requirements and improve performance.
HPS cables use an insulation material with a higher
dielectric constant than traditional PVC, which makes it
possible to reduce the insulated conductor overall
diameter by 15-20% while still maintaining 100-Ohm

characteristic impedance.

Overall Diameter 100-Pair 0.850 0.680 20%
Cross-Sectional Area
While the space-saving ability of KRONE HPS cables
may be apparent in its smaller overall diameter, it
becomes overwhelmingly obvious when evaluating
cross-sectional area (CSA). HPS cables provide almost
a one-third reduction in cross-sectional area when
compared to the other smallest cables in the market,
KRONE’s own EPS cables.

Electrical Characteristics

The insulation material is flame retardant meeting cable
safety requirements. As previously stated, HPS cables
maintain 100-Ohm characteristic impedance due mainly
to the insulation material. Additionally, the lower
dielectric constant of the insulation material provides
other interesting performance benefits for HPS cables
when compared to EPS cables. At 772 kHz, attenuation
was reduced from 2.2 to 1.9 dB/100m (worst case). At
the same frequency, power-sum cross-talk improved by
5 dB (worst case).
