Copper cable solution surpasses fibre optic cost and
performance benefits
The Royal Australian Airforce's Amberley F111
airbase has just completed a significant network
infrastructure refitting with a TrueNet system from
KRONE Australia.
The base was suffering network outages and data
corruptions through a substandard cable
infrastructure. TrueNet, a system guaranteed to be
completely free from data errors in the cabling
channel, was specified above a previously
suggested fibre optic solution.
According to Chris Smith, SE Queensland branch
manager for installer Allied Technologies Group,
"Because of the activities at the base, the
infrastructure had to have a high security rating in
an 'intruder resistant building'. We originally
suggested a complete fibre solution, which would

not be affected by electromagnetic interference
(EMI), such as radar. However, while the cost of
fibre was comparable with copper, the overall cost
to the user after installation to the desktop would
have been three times the cost of cable.
"KRONE's TrueNET, which is a complete integrated
package of cable and connectors, offered low
impedance and far less reflection losses than other
cables, and gave us comparable performance to
fibre optic but at a lower overall cost."
The project involved 50km of KRONE cable, 10km
of steel conduit and 600 KRONE HIGHWAY dual
outlets (voice and data). The cable is carried in the
conduit, which was formed on site, all the way to
the desktop.
Because the conduit runs from the cabinets to the
desktop, across three levels of the building, Mr
Smith said it was a difficult installation. Nonetheless,
the project was completed in two months.
