The drop in industrial production of 10 percent in January was even worse than the
decline in December - setting a new and grim record as Japan sinks into its
worst economic crisis since the Second World War.
The latest figures come just days after the Government said exports had nearly
halved. Consumers around the world afraid of losing their jobs in the downturn no
longer want to buy Japanese electronic gadgets and cars. The Japanese themselves
are also shopping less - average household spending fell 5.9 percent in January
compared to the same month a year earlier. Jobs are being slashed - the number of
people unemployed rose by more than 200,000.
Japan was once seen as relatively immune to the global crisis because its banks
are not as exposed to bad loans as those in the United States or Europe. But its
reliance on foreign markets to drive its economy out of a long slump in the 1990s
has left it painfully exposed. In the last quarter of last year Japan's economy shrank
by 3.3 percent, a far sharper decline than in the United States or Europe.

After the shouts of rage from Congress, this was a vote that reflected the public
anger over the AIG bonuses. Eighty-five House Republicans joined with Democrats
to approve a 90% tax on bonuses awarded to high-earning employees from bailed
out companies.
This was despite opposition from Republican leaders, who argued that the measure
was intended to divert attention away from questions about the administration's
handling of the affair.
The tax, which the Senate will now consider, would apply to anyone earning more
than $250,000 and firms receiving over $5bn of public money.

This vote means that Benjamin Netanyahu can now form a government, one that
might be more internationally acceptable with Labour, than without. This will help Mr
Netanyahu, especially in Washington, where Israeli officials privately worry that they
face the most sceptical administration in decades.
The Labour leader, Ehud Barak, said just before the vote that he would be a
counterweight, not a fig leaf, for Mr Netanyahu. As well as five ministerial
portfolios, he also said he'd gained an agreement that the peace process would
continue and that previous deals with the Palestinians would be honoured. His was
an appeal to pragmatism rather than ideological purity.
The risk for Mr Barak is that some Labour members would accuse him of putting
personal ambition for office first and will opt to keep their principles unsullied,
heading for the back benches in the Knesset. The question is whether this historic
force in Israeli politics will be permanently split after this vote. That will be
something of a problem for Mr Netanyahu as well since it may delay by a few more
days the forming of his new government.

Scientists predict Peru will be one of the three countries most impacted by climate
change. The problems are largely geographic and demographic. Two thirds of the
population live in the main cities on the desert coast with a tiny proportion of the
nation's rainfall. They rely heavily on the fact that Peru is also home to seventy
percent of the world's tropical glaciers.
Peru is also home to the second largest swathe of Amazon rainforest which is under
enormous pressure from de-forestation and oil and gas exploration. Scientists say
it's crucial to preserve it not only for Peru's water supply but for the global climate
system. Researchers say half of Peru's main rivers are polluted, mostly by mining
operations in the Andes Mountains. Add to this the ever more frequent El Nino
phenomenon which alternately causes drought and flooding.
Peru is already split between the haves and the have nots when it comes to
access to water and conflicts are escalating. In Lima many people in poor

neighbourhoods pay up to ten times more for water than people living in middle class
suburbs.
