Research recently carried out suggestions that scientific and constructional toys should be (19) ….......... to girls from
an early age, otherwise the result is “socialization” into stereotypically female roles, which may explain why relatively
few girls study science and engineering at university in Britain. Only 14% of those who have gone for engineering (20)

The most extreme weather conditions experienced in Antarctica are associated with blizzards. These are simply
strong winds with falling snow or, more commonly, snow that is picked up and pushed along the ground by the wind.
Blizzards may (21) ………………. for days at a time, and in some cases it can be almost impossible for people to see.
It is not unusual for objects only about a metre or two away to become unrecognisable. Scientists (22)
…………………… research in the area are then confined to their tents or caravans. We think of blizzards (23)
………………… extremely cold, while in fact temperatures in the Antarctic are usually higher than normal during a
blizzard. Major blizzards of several days in (24) ………….. occur more frequently in some locations than in others.
There may be eight or ten such blizzards in any particular place on an annual (25) ………….. They often cause
considerable damage, so that any scientific buildings or equipment constructed in this region must be specially made to
give as much protection as possible.
If the weather is fine, (26) ………….. in Antarctica is usually excellent because of the clear air and the absence
of dust and smoke. (27) ………….. this means is that people often greatly underestimate the distance of objects and
features of the landscape. Also, very large features such as mountains may appear to be above the horizon, or even (28)
………… down. These ‘mirages’, which are just tricks (29) …………….. by the eyes in certain conditions, have led to
explorers in Antarclic making many errors in (30) ……………..

There are few experiences as unpleasant as being (0) bitterly cold and dripping wet on board a boat.
The (41) …………. that you may be several hours away from warm, dry clothing is enough to slow down even
(42) …………… sailor.

However, recent (43) ………….. developments in the types of material used to make waterproof clothes have,
hopefully, put an end to the (44) …………. of the sailor. New suits, trousers and jackets have been designed which
allow people to stay warm and dry at sea and can be worn (45) ……………. for days on end.
The new clothing is by no means cheap, but that will not stop it from selling well, and not just in the sailing
market. (46) …………. previous types of waterproof clothing, which tended to leave the wearer hot, sweaty and sticky
even after a (47) ………short burst of (48) ………activity, these new clothes are manufactured with an (49) ...……
inner layer. This is made of a special material which allows the clothes to “breath” – in other words, body heat can
