The Father of Modern Medicine
Hippocrates, a physician in Greece around 430 B.C, was the father of modern
medicine. There were physicians before Hippocrates, but his ideas about medicine and
the body were very different from the other doctors of his time. At the time, it was
believed that diseases were caused by angry gods or spirits. Hippocrates, however,
believed that there were natural causes for every disease. He was also the first doctor to
study the human body in detail. From his studies, he identified many diseases, and he was
the first doctor to claim that our thoughts come from our brains. Before that, people
believed that our thoughts and feelings came from our hearts.
Hippocrates’s greatest accomplishment was the Hippocratic Oath. Hippocrates
understood that doctors held great power over their patients. He worried that some
doctors would not use this power properly. So, he developed a promise. It said that
5
doctors would only work to help their patients, never to hurt them. He made all of his
students take his oath. Even today, all new doctors take the Hippocratic Oath.

B. Hippocrates found cures for many diseases.
C. Hippocrates identified many diseases.
D. Hippocrates believed our brains control our thoughts.
4. According to paragraph 2, which of the following best explains the term “Hippocratic
Oath”?
A. The power a doctor has over his patient.
B. The proper use of power by a doctor.
C. Hippocrates’s promise to his students.
D. A doctor’s promise not to hurt his patient.
5. According to paragraph 2, why did Hippocrates create the Hippocratic Oath?

III. Fill in each space with ONE suitable word to complete the passage below.
THE LOCH NESS MONSTER
Loch is the Scottish word (1) a lake. Loch Ness is a very long,
narrow lake (2) the Highlands in the north of Scotland. It is very deep, (3)
300 metres in some places. When the mist is (4) over
the lake in the evening, you can see the creature swimming (5) the
surface of the water, a series of great humps raised in the air, (6) a huge
snake. (7) you want to see the monster, it (8) if you
have a few drops of whisky first, just to (9) warm. It quickly gets cold
beside the Loch, even (10) a warm summer's day.

monsters in Scotland. Nessie was seen first in 565AD when she attacked some travellers
(13) were crossing the lake (14) a small boat. The first

IV. Circle the letter A, B, C or D next to the right word(s) to complete the passage
below.
WINE AT AUCTION
During the winter, most London auctioneers have wine auctions. Some are of
wines for (1) drinking, but most are of fine wines. Last winter, at Christmas, a
dozen bottles of Lafite 1945 were knocked down at £158 the bottle. 1945 and 1961 are
the two most (2) vintage years for claret. Of course, that is not the maximum
you could pay. Not (3) ago, an American at Christmas paid £8,500 for one
bottle of Lafite 1806.
Sometimes, it is a matter of personal indulgence by the (4) rich. At
other times there can be a commercial objective. Last October, a restaurateur from
Memphis, paid £9,000 for a magnum - that is, a two-bottle size - of 1864 Lafite. He (5)
30 people $1,500 each for a dinner with a small glass of the wine. It was (6)
ten times the cost of the wine in publicity for his restaurant.
Of course, some people buy wine purely for investment. On the other hand, a
real wine lover will use the (7) value of good wine to pay for his own
drinking. A syndicate of four will buy a (8) of Lafite 1945 at, say, £2,000.
Each takes three bottles. Then each drinks one bottle, and keeps the other two to sell later
at the (9) price as the three cost in the first place. That is, naturally, taking
inflation into account.
But there is no (10) that a bottle of wine at $1,000 is a hundred times
(11) than one that costs $10. Perhaps the top price you can pay for wine to enjoy
for drinking is $100 a bottle. Above $100, you are paying for something other than taste.
