1) Main objectives and goals of the course
Economics is the study of how society manages its scarce resources. Economics has been
divided into the subcategories of microeconomics and macroeconomics. While
microeconomics focuses on the behavior of individual economic agents, this course macroeconomics - studies how economists measure macroeconomic variables and covers
topics such as determination of national output, economic growth, unemployment, inflation,
interest rates, and exchange rates. Macroeconomics also discusses and assesses the
effectiveness of monetary and fiscal policies under different scenarios.
The main objective of the course is to improve macroeconomic literacy as well as critical
thinking and problem solving skills to explain and predict macroeconomic issues. After the
course, students are able to:
Understand macroeconomic principles and issues
Understand how labor and capital markets work
Identify the factors that determine national income and growth
Understand the dynamics and causes of inflation and unemployment
Evaluate how fiscal and monetary policies could stabilize the economy
Improve skills of analytical thinking, problem solving, writing ability, and team work.

d) Group assignment (GA):
1. Week or date: submission in slot 27, presentation in slot 29 and 30
2. Total weight: 20%
3. Structure:
Students will be divided into 4-6 groups in the first session. Students could join
some in-class activities as members of those groups. Each group will be assigned
one topic, or will choose one topic subject to the instructor's approval, which is
related to current economic issues in the real world. Students need to apply all
comprehensive knowledge of macroeconomics to explain and analyze those
issues. This group presentation will test critical thinking and skills of applying
macroeconomic theory to explain and predict the economic phenomena in the real
world. One suggestion for the group presentation is to give students some current
economic issues such as inflation, exchange rates, effective of macroeconomic
policies, etc. and ask students to identify the dynamics as well as the causes of
such issues. Students could be also asked to propose some policy implications.
The slides in .pdf format and written report of the presentation must be sent to the
instructor in advance. A deduction of 10% of the presentation mark will be applied
for each day of late submission. Each group presentation will take place in appx.
