2 Activity 1.1: Designing a New Type of Motorcycle

Exercise 1: Determining Your Gathering and Analysis Process
Your research indicates that more people would like to ride motorcycles, but
that they do not like the design of current motorcycles. You need to collect
information to make an informed decision about the type of motorcycle that

will attract new riders. After you collect and analyze the information, you will
be able to develop a design.
First, you will generate a list of questions and ideas in a small group.
!
Decide how you will obtain the information you need to develop the
motorcycle
1. Participate in small groups assigned by the instructor.
2. Provide at least three sources from which you can try to obtain information.
Be specific. If you want to interview a person, specify their job or
characteristics.
3. Indicate at least two questions that you can ask each source. Different
sources may require different types of questions.
4. Assume that the three sources you identified have provided all of the
information you need to start your motorcycle project. List four steps you
can take to analyze the information. Briefly describe the process involved in
each step.
5. List three ways in which you can present your results to designers at a
motorcycle factory.

Next, identify a spokesperson who can present the group’s ideas in a class
discussion. Brainstorm about your answers and present them in any format that
will communicate them most effectively. For example, you could present your
answers through visual images, text, or a combination of both.
