Situation
For services providers, there are thousands of customers beyond the Carrier Service Area (CSA) range
of 12kft. While each of these customers today represents main and perhaps second line service
revenue, they are all prospects for increased revenue from higher speed services such as ADSL.
Yet service providers face potent barriers to realizing new revenue from these customers. The first
barrier is technology. HDSL with DS-1 repeaters offers the reach, yet is incompatible with ADSL
when carried in the same cable bundle. HDSL2 eliminates this spectral interference with ADSL, but
is limited to a range of 12kft on 24 AWG. [Other technology options are repeatered T1 with worse
spectrum compatibility and higher costs than HDSLx, and fiber with high costs and long time-to-
delivery if fiber is even available] The second barrier is capex constraints. Today, every dollar of
investment is scrutinized carefully. Reaching customers beyond 12kft CSA range with ADSL may
appear attractive, yet additional plant and equipment may result in a poor return on investment.
Faced with balancing cost against revenue opportunity, and with balancing reach against
performance, service providers now have a new choice of technology to cost-effectively reach
customers beyond CSA range with DS-1 services.
Solution
The standards-based Soneplex®/HiGain HDSL4 delivers extended reach and DS-1 spectral
compatibility with improved performance and lower costs. It is a complementary technology that
expands the capabilities of HDSL and HDSL2, offering service providers another choice for DS-1
service delivery.
Data shows that 11% more customers can be reached through the extended reach of HDSL4 in the
12kft to 16kft range without adding expensive outside plant repeaters. The combination of
extended CSA reach to 16kft on 24 AWG and spectral compatibility with popular services such as
ADSL translates into cost-effective revenue opportunities for service providers.
Benefits:
• Spectral compliance with xDSL services. Standards-compliant HDSL4, such as
ADC’s Soneplex/HiGain, is the only DS-1 transport technology that is compatible with
xDSL in the same cable bundle when deployed beyond 12kft on 24 AWG.

Reach more customers to earn new xDSL revenue. Soneplex/HiGain HDSL4
extends spectrally compatible DS-1 service to 16kft on 24 AWG

without repeaters–a
30% increase in reach. Spectral compatibility is maintained to 46kft on 24 AWG with
just two repeaters.

Cost savings. Fewer repeaters reduce equipment, installation and maintenance costs.

Improved customer satisfaction. Spectral compliance ensures improved circuit
performance and reliability.

Implementation
Chassis to support DS-1 network feed
The high-density Soneplex Loop Extender Chassis houses HDSL4 modules as well as other modules
supporting HDSL, HDSL2, T1 repeaters, DS1, optical DS2, and D3LX that can be mixed to accommodate

unique requirements. Advanced diagnostic and management functions allow maximum control and visibility
throughout local networks.
Chassis to support DS-1 or DS-3 network feed
Wideband System 3190 provides full compatibility and interoperability with modules supporting HDSLx and
repeatered T1 services. The Wideband system combines an industry-standard SONET or DS-3 multiplexer
with ADC's industry-standard HDSL, HDSL2 and HDSL4 distribution system.
Outside Plant Installation
For above and below ground applications, EnCaser 819 apparatus case provides an optical thermal
environment for increased installation density and reliability of enclosed electronics.
DS-1 Service Module
Soneplex/HiGain HDSL4 provides xDSL spectral compatibility up to 16kft on 24 AWG without the use of
repeaters and up to 46kft on 24 AWG with two repeaters. It is fully NEBS compliant and follows the
Spectrum Management T1.418 Issue 2 standard. By use of Trellis Line coding techniques, lower transmit
power levels, spectrum shaping, power back off, and two-pair transmission, HDSL4 extends reach at a lower
cost in a spectrally compliant solution.
