Situation
For many buildings and campus environments, voice, data and Internet communications are
supported with DS-1 services. Yet as demands for bandwidth continue to increase, DS-1 is proving
insufficient for some applications. Today, DS-3 is more than just "nice to have". It has become a
necessity. Extending DS-3 services over longer distances to select floors in a building or to buildings
in a campus is required.
In this case, the customer could be an Interoffice Carrier (IOC) or a Competitive Local Exchange
Carrier (CLEC), buying DS-3 from the Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier (ILEC) to provide a local area
network within a building or campus. Or the customer could be a building owner, managing the
varied bandwidth requirements of multiple tenants within a building or of multiple buildings across
a campus.
For each of these customers, DS-1 may be fully deployed, yet distance limitations restrict deployment
of DS-3 service over copper pairs. For each customer, the issue remains the same—how to
selectively deploy highly reliable DS-3 services across a campus or up the risers in a building in a cost-
effective manner.
Solution
The Soneplex® DS-3 Loop Extender (D3LX) module enables efficient, cost-effective distribution of
DS-3 services throughout a building or campus. Mounted in the Soneplex Loop Extender Chassis,
D3LX extends distance by transmitting DS-3 signals over a single fiber cable. With a 13dB optical
budget, D3LX can extend DS-3 service up to about 16 miles—more than enough distance for tall
buildings and sprawling campus settings.
D3LX converts electrical DS3 signals into optical DS3 signals, which are transmitted on a single fiber
using wave division multiplexing (WDM) technology. Optical DS-3 signals are then converted back
into electrical DS-3 signals at Soneplex Remote Terminals. Using WDM, transmit and receive signals
are carried on different wavelengths on the same single mode fiber cable—leveraging the existing
fiber plant and reducing implementation costs.
Benefits – D3LX
• Leverage existing fiber plant. By using WDM, DS-3 transmit and receive signals
require one single mode fiber, not two.
•
Lower costs. Addresses bandwidth demands without the costs of laying new fibers.
D3LX is less costly than wireless or SONET-based DS-3 solutions.
•
Add flexibility. Allows selective DS-3 capacity expansion to any floor or building.
•
Extend distance. Enables a longer reach for DS-3 services with use of fiber cables.

Implementation
Chassis
The high-density Soneplex Loop Extender Chassis houses D3LX modules as well as low speed modules supporting
HDSL, HDSL2, HDSL4, T1 repeaters and optical DS2 that can be mixed to accommodate unique requirements.
Supporting both fiber and copper simulataneously, the Soneplex Loop Extender Chassis provides maximum
flexibility. Advanced diagnostic and management functions allow maximum control and visibility throughout local
networks.
DS-3 Service Module
Soneplex DS-3 Loop Extender (D3LX) Module converts electrical DS-3 signals to optical DS-3 signals for optical
transport over single mode fiber cable using 1310/1550nm WDM. D3LX supports both remote and central office
modules with central office and remote alarm capability as well as optional 1+1 switching capability. Up to 7
protected or 14 unprotected DS-3 circuits can be provided from a Soneplex Loop Extender Chassis.
Remote Terminals
Optical to electrical conversion is accomplished with Soneplex Remote Terminals. The two position terminal
supports up to two D3LX modules occupying a single rack unit. The four position terminal supports four D3LX
modules—two working and two protected—with a choice of indoor wall or rack mounting. The four position
chassis contains optional redundant rectifiers for AC powering, optional battery back-up and an optional DS-3
patch panel for easy monitoring, management and maintenance. Each terminal provides remote performance
monitoring and craft access for easy and lower cost maintenance.
D3LX enables DS-3 service to support the high speed, high volume requirements of multiple tenants within a
building. With distance capabilities of approximately 16 miles, D3LX—which is temperature hardened for outside
plant applications—is well suited for DS-3 distribution in campus environments, too.
