Farmland Can Sequester Carbon From the Atmosphere California rancher John Wick says the Marin Carbon Project could help save the world from climate change. “How would you possibly know, looking out at this beautiful day in front of us, that the Earth is crashing?" he asks, rhetorically. "But when scientists measure it and see the effect of it, and watch the ocean die-off and everything happening, this is scary as hell. And, then, we have evidence that there might be something that could stop that. And, then, we had measurement of something that holds promise to actually reverse it.” That "something" is carbon farming, using processed compost to cool the Earth. It's a theory developed by rangeland ecologist Jeff Creque, who also promotes beneficial land management practices to increase the health of agricultural systems. “Agriculture is the art of moving carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to the vegetation to the soil and, then, back again," he says, explaining, "If we can increase the rate of carbon capture and decrease the rate of carbon loss, we can actually begin to bend that Keeling curve of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in the other direction, which is what we need to achieve.” Wick met the ecologist when he turned to him for help restoring his ranchland, which had been overgrazed by cattle, and overrun with invasive weeds and brush. After implementing a strategic grazing disruption plan Creque designed, deep-rooted native flora gradually returned to the property. Hanoi, September 3rd 2009 Dear Long, How have you been doing? Have you got any plan for the coming school break? Perhaps I will go to see my grandparents in the countryside. I haven’t seen them since my last school holiday. Let me tell you about my last summer vacation at my grandparents’. It was almost a year ago and was one of my most unforgettable experiences. My grandparents live in a small village in Trung Khanh. There is a large river at the back of their house where I often go swimming every afternoon when I spend my vacation with them. One day when I was swimming with some of my friends, I suddenly caught a cold. I felt so dizzy and was too weak to continue swimming, so I started to sink. I thought I was going to drown but I couldn’t call out for help because I was too tired and terrified. Luckily, one of my friends saw that and shouted for help. Immediately, another friend who swims the best among us swam.

Now recalling the moment I thought I was going to die, I understand how precious life is. This event definitely taught me to appreciate my life. What about you? Have you got any unforgettable holiday that you would like to share with me? See you soon. CAND Read I knew it was going to be a bad day when, on the way to the airport, the taxi driver told me he was lost. I had booked my flight over the telephone, so when we finally arrived, I had to rush to the reservation desk to pay for my ticket. The woman at the desk told me that my name was not on the passenger list. It took fifteen minutes to realize that she had spelled my name incorrectly. She gave me the ticket and told me I'd better check in my luggage quickly or I'd miss my flight. I was the last person to get on the plane. I found my seat and discovered that I was sitting next to a four-year-old boy who had a cold. I sat down and wondered if anything else could go wrong. I hate flying, especially take-off, but the plane took off and everything seemed to be all right. Then, a few minutes later, there was a funny noise and everything started to shake. I looked out of the window and – oh my God - there was smoke coming out of the wing. All I could think was "The engine are on fire. We are going to crash. I am too young to die." Almost immediately, the captain spoke to us in a very calm voice "Ladies and gentlement. This is your captain speaking. We are having a slight technical problem with one of our engines. There is no need to panic. We will have to return to the airport. Please remain seated and keep your seat belts fastened." A few minutes later, we were coming on to land. The pilot made a perfect landing on the runway. It was over. We were safe. That day I decided not to fly again. I caught another taxi and went home. But as I closed the front door. I looked down at my case. Somehow I had picked up the wrong suitcase. What to Do with Contaminated Water from Fukushima? Japanese officials are considering what to do with the large amount of poisoned water being stored at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The plant went into meltdown after a 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Huge water storage tanks around the center currently hold an estimated 750,000 tons of water poisoned with a radioactive substance called tritium. People objected last month when news reports said the owner of the center, TEPCO, planned to release the water into the Pacific Ocean. Environmental groups and local fishermen do not want the water released. Takahiro Kimoto is general manager of TEPCO’s nuclear division. He says the company has not yet made a decision. “Since there may be an influence on the environment, and because there have been harmful rumors about what effects it may have on people and the environment, we are still consulting with various stakeholders before finally deciding on the solution,” Kimoto said. 1.
