Question 1 (6 pts)
Write an assignment to answer the questions “What are the roles of culture in doing
business? Are there any difficulties when high-context and low-context cultures do
business together? How do they overcome the cultural barriers?” Give specific examples
to illustrate your point of view.
Answer:
Every business has a unique culture that gives them so many benefits. Today, the world
increasingly integrates every business that needs to establish its own culture and at the
same time must follow the international culture when associating international
cooperation. So what is culture and what are the roles of it when doing business ?
1
Culture refers to the patterns of behavior or ways of life of people. It gives meaning and
impotance to activities done by a large group of people. Culture also includes knowledge,
beliefs, arts, laws, customs, capabilities, and habits of the individuals in these groups.
The business culture determines how the different levels of staff communicate with one
another as well as how employees deal with clients and customers.
First of all, culture plays an important role in the business. Business culture goes a long
with creating the brand image of the business. Corporate culture creates a special feature
in the working style of the business, from leaders to employees, so it helps a businesses
create their own brand. Culture is what makes your brand unique and gives it that special
edge. The more customer know about your brand, the more they trust and care about your
product. They will always want to be loyalt customer of your brand and it should thank to
your business culture. Culture just like your business’s soul because when you define
culture you are also defining your company’s value and goals. This really shows your
employees and the public that culture determines your brand.
Secondly, culture increase loyalty among employees. Employees are a business most
important asset. A great culture will bring positive and abundant energy to your
employees. Culture will shape the way work and workspace for employees. They will
know how to interact with customers, colleagues, superiors through learning corporate
culture. The culture gives employees the motivation and the goal to work, it unites the
members of the company that makes the employees unwilling to be separated. Once
employees are truly engaged they will want to devote themselves to the company and that
has kept them working long term.
Futhermore, business culture creates a professional working style, partners appreciate
your business, and competitors cannot pass your business when you have a unique
business culture. Not only domestic partners but also foreign partners respect a business
where a good culture is built. When businesses can combine the unique of their culture
with the partner's culture, their cooperation will be very convenient.
2
Finally, corporate culture plays a part in economic growth and longevity. You cannot
maintain a long-term business without designing its culture. Once the corporate culture is
in place and everyone follows it, your business will last for a long time. When employees
are satisfied with the corporate culture environment, they will create many ideas to
increase profitability for the company.
Business culture can be expressed through actions, behaviors, communication, etc. There
are high-context and low-context cultures in doing business. Low context in which the
partners clearly say what they mean, the language is direct and clear and there is no
ambiguity. High context cultures in which attitudes and circumstances are more important
than what is actually said. High context and low context cultures has many differences so
it is unavoidable the difficulties when they do business together.
The difficulty is the exchange of information. This problems can be separated into
differences about "direction", "quantity" and "quality." For example, employees from
high-context cultures like China and France share very specific and extensive information
with their in group members. Low-context cultures like the United States and Germany
prefer to limit communication to smaller, more select groups of people, sharing only that
information which is necessary.
An other difficulty is about different communication style. High context and low context
culture will have difficulty when they talk to each other, it might be the barrier of
language, the vocal and style. In hight context culture, you don’t have to say everything
because the listener can read the situation through mutual knowledge or experience. In
contrast, with low context culture, you have to say everything straight, less amount of
mutual knowledge. This different make both of two side often misunderstand each other.
For example, Japanese can find Westerners to be offensively blunt. Westerners can find
Japanese to be secretive, devious and bafflingly unforthcoming with information.
Cultural differences are a major barrier when businesses work together so to be successful
they need tips to over come culture barrier.
3
They first need to learn about each other's cultures when they begin to work together to
gain complete information about each other's cultural context. They need to learn about
the country's culture and partner's corporate culture. Once they understand each other's
culture they will decide whether or not to do business together and how they do business
in those countries. For example, when Vietnamese company and Japanese company do
business together. Vietnamese will learn the high culture of Japan to meet and negotiation
with them better.
Secondly, they put themselves in the position of the partner to better understand the
purpose and role of the partner's culture. By asking why other cultures have to follow
certain customs or behaviors differently, they can better understand each other. People
often don’t put themselves in position of other when they decide or do something that lead
to bad consequences because other may not agree their dicision. If it’s hard to put yourself
in someone else’s shoes, you should feel free to ask them to clarify your wondering. The
business will be supported if both of them know the purpose of each other’s culture.
Finally, they should also know the aspects of the target market. They should learn about
how to structure social communication and how people communicate high or low context
to get used to and follow it when working with other countries.
Each business has its own culture, diverse culture will make you adapt to more working
environments. To succeed in business you need to thoroughly understand about culture of
partner. Low cultural contexts and high cultural contexts are two contradictory cultures,
so it is necessary to understand and propose methods of conduct when cooperating with
each other.

Question 2:
Read the case below and write an assignment to answer the question that follow.
You and a friend design and sell your own line of T- shirts at rock concerts. You have
been very successful in your own country, and now several contacts in other countries
4
have expressed interest in your product. What problems do you anticiple if you start to
export, and what solution can you suggest?
Answer:
Any business wants to expand their market, especially to expand the market to other
countries. Exporting goods and products is a real opportunity to increase profits and
expand reputation. Exporting goods is always not easy if you do not anticipate the
difficulties and challenges when participating in international trade. Therefore, here is
some main difficulties I anticiple if I start to export our T- shirt and some solution I
suggest.
Firstly, we need to concern about geography and transportation. One of the first exporting
challenges that you might have to deal with is the distance. Geographical distance can
prevent you from transporting goods to countries as it will take a long time. Moreover, we
need to choose the shipping methods which usually transport by air and by water and
have to pay a high fee for them. The solution I suggest here is we should find out goods
quotas allowed by importing countries. In addition, we can find a company to find an
international cargo insurance company to protect your goods from fraudulence or loss on
the way of transportation.
Secondly, different customs and cultures is also concerned. When you tend to export in a
new country you need to consider their culture and traditions. It may happen especially
when you are exporting meat or even clothes. For example, you should not export sexy
clothes for woman to some country where almost people follow Muslim because most of
them often wear clothes which cover whole their body. The way to solve this problem is
first of all ourselves, before deciding to export goods to a country we need to learn about
their culture. We can find out by age, locality where can fit our goods.
In addition, we also need to anticiple about the different legal norms. When it comes to
the possible problem of exporting goods, the legal systems is an important one. You need
to find and understand import and export laws to countries wich you tend to export your
5
goods and product. Many foreign countries require certificates and export permits. So you
should have an expert on this issue to be able to work faster and more conveniently.
Finally, language barriers can be a real issue when trading internationally. If your importer
and you don’t speak in same language, it’ll be hard to understand each other. The main
trading language can be used is English but still have some country they don’t even use
english. The problem is our interpreter sometime can not translation all information so it
may loose some information. This problem I give suggestion is we should prepare
ourselves for an international language like English. In addition, when exporting to nonEnglish speaking countries, we need to find an interpreter to ensure the transmission of
information for us.
Exporting to foreign countries is a great thing to expand the market of businesses.
Reaching customers around the world is a great way to increase brand reach. We should
know the importance of exporting goods because it brings many benefits to businesses.
Besides, we need to anticipate difficult problems and come up with solutions to better
handle them. In addition to the difficulties and solutions above, we need to refer to many
issues such as payment methods, importers, ... to be able to safely export goods.
