KRONE has a long history as a market leader in the
communications and information industry.
Founded in 1928 by Gustav Krone, the KRONE
Group is one of the world’s leading suppliers of the
interconnection and distribution systems used in
telecommunications and data networks.
KRONE is represented in 140 countries around the
globe by 29 subsidiaries, 80 sales partners and
approximately 3,000 employees.
Our core LSA-Plus quick connection system, which
allows wire connection without soldering, screwing
or insulation removal, is considered an industry
standard in more than 140 markets worldwide.
INTRODUCTION
The use of KRONE’s HIGHBAND
TM
range within a
structured cable system enables highspeed LAN
and WAN systems “Maximum Headroom” in
transmission performance. It is the only product on
the market which far exceeds International
Category 5e performance standards and even
proposed Category 6
This improved cross connection system offers
extended bandwidth capacity and transmission
performance - a feature required in today’s
cabling systems to meet the demands of
tomorrow’s networks.
HIGHBANDconfigures and integrates easily with all

existing KRONE solutions and is part of the KRONE
PremisNET
TM
range of cabling systems. It also forms
a critical component of KRONE’s impedance
matched TrueNet
TM
structured cabling systems.
TrueNet is the first cabling system in the world to
eliminate data errors in the cabling channel
dramatically enhancing network efficiency and
performance. HIGHBAND is space saving, easy to
manage, and its ability to allow jumpering,
patching, or Patch-By-Exception, makes it the most
flexible system on the market today.
When patching, HIGHBAND gives you proven
reliability by the use of a centre port for the
connection which is separate to the wire
termination point.
The unique design of the silver plated KRONE LSA
Plus contact and its mechanical cable support gives
you the most reliable and secure connection
method available.
HIGHBAND is manufactured in Australia under the
ISO9001 Quality Standard and is sold world wide
through the KRONE global distribution network.

DESIGNINGBUILDINGANDFLOORDISTRIBUTORS
When configuring a floor distributor, using KRONE
HIGHBAND modules, a number of options are
available to meet the requirements of each specific
site. There is also a wide range of KRONE
mounting hardware to suit all distributor sizes.
The basic frame layout should comprise discrete
fields as shown in the example below. It is good
practice to balance up your frame, for example by
positioning your work area field in the centre of
the frame to segregate the vertical cabling and
data ports on the floor distributor.
HIGHBAND is unique in that it gives the user
multiple cross connect choices based on the
following two basic cross connect methods:
1. Jumper Cross Connect
- For both voice and high speed data traffic.
- The most economical method when there is
infrequent need for changes or where better
administration and control is required
- Subsequent savings on patch panels and cords

can be used to purchase additional data hub
ports to liven up spare outlets - simplifying
workstation moves and patch administration.
2. Patch Cross Connect
- For both voice and high speed data traffic.
- Provides the easiest method of cross connecting
A combination of both jumpering and patching can
be used for the optimum mix of methods to suit
particular operational requirements, eg:
Jumper the voice cross connects and
patch the data
This mix of methods could be used when flexible
data configuration is required but the telephone
environment is stable and the extensions can be
changed electronically at the PABX. This mix would
allow some cost savings.
Patch-By-Exception
This is the best all-round solution when you have a
large number of cross connections (>100) and
when:
- Cost-cutting is essential
- High reliability coupled with moderate flexibility
and ease of use are essential. The PBE method
facilitates administration and control of moves
and changes.
- High density Telco connectorised hub equipment
is used.

Category 4 is acceptable. This gives an advantage of increased
density and provides the possibility for the fitting of over
voltage protection should it be required on the distribution.

Example: Designing a Floor Distributor for
100 Workstations
Design Criteria
- Two outlets per workstation (one voice, one data)
i.e. RJ45
- The area is served by an electronic PABX with 120
four wire extensions to provide one extension to
every workstation using 10x25 pair cable or 250
pair riser cable
- Infrequent moves are expected

- 100 BASE-T hub with 64 ports to be initially
installed to serve 50 of the workstations
- Gigabit Ethernet and ATM expected to be used
on network cabling in two years’ time
- Need to keep budget costs down
Basic decisions from criteria:
- Use HIGHBAND 8 modules on PABX, data and
work area fields
- Jumper all cross connections and Patch-By
Exception when infrequent moves are required
- Run short patch cables from 100 BASE-T hub
ports to data vertical and terminate 2 ports
(i.e. 8 pairs) per HIGHBAND 8 module. Use
modular plugs suited to solid conductor cable or
cut pre-manufactured patch cords in half and
punch down stranded cable at Highband 8.
Calculations:
Question: How many HIGHBAND 8 modules are
needed?
Answer:
(a) On work area field: Answer = 100 HIGHBAND 8
modules. Remember, one HIGHBAND 8 module
can accommodate two 4 pair outlets. There are
100 workstations with two outlets per workstation,
making a total of 200 outlets. Therefore 100
HIGHBAND 8 modules are required.
(b) On data field vertical: Answer = 32 HIGHBAND
8 modules. Since we will terminate two 10 BASE T
ports per module and as there are 64 ports; 32
modules are needed.

(c) On the voice or riser field: Answer = 32
HIGHBAND 8 modules. There are a total of 120
x 2 pair telephone circuits. This equals 240
pairs. Therefore 30 HIGHBAND8 modules are
required to terminate the specified extensions
and two modules are required to terminate the
spare cable pairs.
In total, the Distributor will use 164 HIGHBAND
8 modules.

by exception, and use these when required.

TrueNet's zero bit error rate guarantee is
revolutionising the structured cabling industry. Until
now, no other cabling solution has been able to
deliver what Network Managers want most -

optimum data throughput. Companies worldwide
are now enjoying increased network speed and
efficiency resulting from adopting a TrueNet solution.
TrueNet Cat 5eT and Cat 6T systems are available in
a RJ solution format, and can also be configured
using KRONE's HIGHBAND 8 or Ultim8 IDC modules.
Utilising HIGHBAND modules as part of the TrueNet
solution makes KRONE's cost effective and easy to
manage Patch-By-Exception function possible.
During the research and development stage of
TrueNet, KRONE HIGHBAND connectors and KRONE
cable were finely tuned to achieve an impedance
match of 100 (±3) ohms, which is five times greater
than the IEEE standard of 100 (±15) ohms for
network cabling components. This level of
impedance matching has reduced the occurrence of
data errors, caused by the cabling system, and
subsequent re-transmissions to such a negligible
level that KRONE actually guarantees zero bit error
rate performance from the TrueNet system.

A Consolidation Point is particularly useful when
wiring to modular furniture, workstation clusters or
partitioned office areas. When moving modular
furniture or office partitions, there is no need to
run new cabling all the way back to the Floor
Distributor (which could be up to 90 metres). You
only need to renew the last few metres from the
Consolidation Point to the workstation outlets.

HIGHBANDConsolidation points can be
accommodated in:
•Wall boxes, e.g. KRONECTIONBoxes
•Floor boxes
•Ducting
•Ceiling spaces
•Utility poles

INSTALLATIONPRACTICES
Installation of Cables
Cables can enter the frame (either backmount or
Profil) from the top or bottom. Minimum cable
length should equal the distance to the termination
point plus 300 mm. Cables should be velcro tied
but not too tightly, at randomly spaced intervals (of
approx. 200 mm) inside the mounting frame.

Termination of Cables
Cables can be terminated either before or after the
module is mounted on the frame. When using a
Profil frame it is recommended to mount one end
of the module only to allow access to the rear of
the module, leaving both hands free for cable
feeding and termination.
Always commence with the module at the lowest
point on the frame. Ensure module is mounted
with KRONElogo facing up.
Fan the pairs to the corresponding termination
point. (The maximum untwist distance allowable
under the standards for Category 5e installations is
13 mm.) Place the wires in the termination slots
and terminate using a KRONE termination tool
(note: only a genuine KRONETool can be used).
After termination of the module is complete, place
the module on the mounting frame and repeat the
process on the next module.
Running of Jumpers &Patch Cords
Patch CordsPatch Cords
Insert the patch cord in the centre access port for
the pairs to be patched. Interlocking guides prevent
the patch cord from being inserted upside down.
Loop the patch cord back through the guide ring
provided on the side of the module nearest the
pairs to be patched.
Always maintain a minimum bend radius of four
times the cable diameter. The patch cord should
then be run to the top of the frame and across to

the desired location at the other end.
JumpersJumpers
Feed the Category 5e cable through the guide ring
provided on the side of the module.
Fan and place theCategory 5e jumper wire in the
termination slots of the desired pairs ensuring the
twist rate is maintained to the point of termination
(bottom row of the HIGHBAND 8 and HIGHBAND
10 disconnection modules).
Terminate each wire using a KRONE termination
tool. The jumper wire should then be run to the
top of the frame and guided across to the desired
location on the frame using the main jumper rings
and terminated appropriately.

Patch-By-Exception
PATCHBYEXCEPTION- HOWDOESITWORK?
Patch-By-Exception is a solution whereby you hard wire your network and make subsequent changes utilising
patch cords. The diagram shows a patch cord changing the input from workstation one to workstation two.
The cord disconnects the jumpers leading to workstation one and re-directs the signal through the patch
cord to workstation two. To go back to the original configuration, simply remove the patch cord. If the
change is to be made permanent, a cabling specialist can be called in to hard wire the configuration and the
removed patch cord can be reused for other temporary changes.
page twelve
Permanent services are hardwired
rather than patched
Data side frame does not need to be
co-located with active equipment

Category 5, 5e, or 6 cable is used
instead of patch cords.
Extensive labelling options
'19 inch' accommodation such
as racks is not required.
Capacity for mounting with
existing LSA modules
Testing convenience
This provides a neat and tidy cable management solution and allows
for greater flexibility of wiring arrangements and superior reliability.
Reduces cabinet and floor space requirements and costs. Is
particularly effective with high density Telco connectorised hubs
which allows further cabinet space reductions.
This method is more cost effective as jumper cable is cheaper
than the equivalent length of patch cord. Performance is
enhanced due to the lower attenuation of jumper cable and the
elimination of one plug and socket in the channel.
More information can be displayed on the modules reducing the
need to refer to other documentation.
Makes this solution cost effective as '19 inch' racks are more
expensive. Fits in shallow wall recesses or closets.
Cost Reduction.
Suspected faulty hub or PABX ports can be tested or rerouted to
locate problems without losing the underlying patch.

After the installation is complete, every installed
HIGHBANDcircuit should be tested. This can be
done using a hand held scanner. Using a
HIGHBAND 4 pair to RJ45 patch cord (as shown),
test each link for attenuation, crosstalk and ACR.
The table below is taken from AS3080-2000 (draft)
and indicates minimum results that must be
achieved for a Class D Cat5 link and Class E Cat6
link. (Check with your Standards organisation for
local requirements.) The results achieved should be
printed and given to the owner of the site at time
of hand over.

Insertion LossInsertion Loss- Attenuation is the amount of loss of a signal brought about through the characteristics of
any transmission medium.

Near End Crosstalk LossNear End Crosstalk Loss- This refers to interference caused by unwanted coupling of electrical signal power
from one pair into adjacent pairs within the same cable sheath. A high value indicates low levels of
unwanted signal and best performance.

IDENTIFICATIONOFPATCHCORDS
Description
HIGHBAND patch cords have contacts on both
sides of the printed circuit board. This allows the
same patch cord to be used on both the disconnect
modules i.e. HIGHBAND 8 and 10 and the patching
modules, i.e. HIGHBAND 16 and 20. Patch cord
wiring configurations are shown in figures 1 to 6
on the following page. High quality, flexible
Category 5e UTP cable is used in the manufacture
of these cords (except the one pair voice patch
cord which uses Category 3 cable).
