How can scientists predict earthquakes? Earthquakes are not scattered anywhere but happen in certain
areas. They happen in places where pieces of the earth’s surface meet. This pattern causes to shake the same
places many times. For example, earthquakes often occur on the west-coast of North and South America, around
the Mediterranean Sea, and along the Pacific coast of Asia.
Another way to predict earthquakes is to look for changes in the earth’s surface, like a sudden drop of
water level in the ground. Some people say animals can predict earthquakes. Before earthquakes, people have

strangely.
After an earthquake happens, people can die from lack of food, water, and medical supplies. The amount

year, only about fifteen cause great damage and many deaths.

ARCTIC ICE MAY DISAPPEAR IN A DECADE
A new report on global warming predicts the frozen Artic Ocean will soon be like a normal sea in the
summers. There are shocking changes happening in the polar environment and its fragile eco-systems. For
millions of years, the sea around the North Pole has been frozen all year round. Recent research from the World
Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Catlin Atlantic Survey show things are changing fast. They predict that within a
decade, the Artic will be larger ice-free in the summer. They base their prediction on the rate at which the sea
ice is currently thinning. The lead researcher, Professor Peter Wadhams said, “The area is now more likely to

Developing a skill of effective reading will improve your learning and comprehension. Here are a few
ideas you can start implementing right now to become a better reader.
Firstly, you can start with identifying the pattern of the text. Read the title, table of contents,
introduction, headings and subheadings, conclusion, and note the visuals. After this rapid reading, you should
be able to tell what the text is about and how it is structured.
Secondly, always formulate the purpose of your reading. What do you want to take away from the
reading? Write down questions and problems that you think can be answered and solved once you read the text.

color codes to classify the information, tab the important pages.
Fourthly, take action. Use the knowledge you have acquired from the reading. Test it with flashcards,
