And today our guest is Dr Andrea Cohen, a sociologist, who is researching on gossip.

She knows all about how, why and when we gossip. Gossip has a bit of bad reputation,
isn’t it?
Yes, indeed it does. We have an idea that gossip is - you know - people whispering
about other people, saying bad things about others. That is a part of gossip, yes, but it is
a very small part. Most gossip is perfectly harmless - and very natural.
Could you give us a definition of gossip?
Well, some sociologists define gossip as informal talk about people’s personal
relationships.
About others’ personal relationships?
Not necessarily. A lot of gossip is about our relationships. We talk about our new boss,
the problems we have with our families, our colleague and our neighbors.
Well, by that definition, I guess we gossip a lot.
Absolutely. About two thirds of our informal talk is spent on these kinds of topics social ones.

Interesting....And now, do men gossip? It often seems to be associated with women, but
I think men do it too.
Oh, yes. In terms of time spent on gossip, men gossip almost as much as women. But
they spent more time talking about themselves.
Really?
Yes, women talk about others more.
Why do we gossip?
Well, that is an interesting question. Basically, gossip makes us feel like we are a part of
the community. And if you think about it, it is harder and harder to feel part of a
community today. Our families and friends often live quite a long away these days. We
may not know our neighbors very well. So gossips help us make connections with our
community of friends and families.
So most of gossips takes over the phone?
On the phone, yes, and now we have more ways of gossiping by the phone more than we
used to. People use either cell phones to have connections while they are waiting for the
bus. Teenagers are taking to their friends all time, with text messaging for example.
Technology helps us stay in touch nowadays.
