Overview
Application Note 1231
In many applications, T1 repeater and other hicap transmission equipment lines are
terminated in remote cabinets in 3192-style shelves or racks. Now, with the recent intro-
duction of the Soneplex 3192R HDSL remote module, HDSL circuits originating from a
Soneplex central office terminal (COT) module can be terminated remotely in 3192-style
shelves. The 3192 shelf is a standard shelf configuration commonly used in the industry.
3192 shelves support 28 module slots and each slot is provided power, local alarm contact
points and circuit pin-outs for loop and line wiring for the module.
The 3192 HDSL remote module is compatible with all ADC HDSL central office and
repeater modules, supporting non-repeated, single-repeated, and dual-repeated applica-
tions. A local craft port is available on the front panel enabling provisioning from the
remote facility.
Using HDSL as a DS1 transport scheme has inherent cost savings for carriers because it
requires fewer repeaters and minimizes engineering and service installation time as
compared to T1 repeater and other local loop distribution schemes. The Soneplex 3192R
remote module converts HDSL transmissions to DS1 channels for distribution to remote
carrier and customer sites.

HDSL Remote Module for 3192 Shelves
One application of the Soneplex 3192R remote module involves digital loop
carrier (DLC) cabinets which include a 3192 shelf. The 3192 shelves are populated with
modules which interface the CO high-capacity lines to the high speed interfaces of the
DLC systems. Carriers often deploy DLC systems in the local loop with vacant slots in the
3192 shelves, allowing for system expansion as customer demand increases.
The Soneplex 3192R remote module now gives carriers the option of transporting T1s to
DLC systems via HDSL on copper lines. With 3192 shelves already installed in DLC
cabinets, the carrier’s migration to the more cost-effective method of HDSL-based T1
transport can be accomplished simply and easily.
