Brønderslev Municipality

Brønderslev
Brønderslev, population 11,800
www.broenderslev.dk
Brønderslev is a typical village that expanded
naturally when the railroad between Aalborg and
Hjørring opened in 1871. In 1921, Brønderslev
became a merchant town; so far the second last
town in Denmark to achieve this status.

Hedelund (Nørregade/Parkvej) is a large public
rhododendron park with more than 10,000 plants
and over 100 different species. A walk in Hedelund
Park is a wonderful experience

Store Vildmose
Tagmarksvej/Dalgasvej, 12 kilometres. West of
Brønderslev
www.vildmosemuseet.dk
The nature area, Store Vildmose, is one of the few
raised bogs in Europe. In raised bogs the growing
bog moss keeps raising the bog and the peat. A large
part of the original peat bog has been cultivated, but
there are still remnants left of the original fascinating
landscape. At Vildmose Museum in Brønderslev
(Paukærvej 15) visitors can learn about Store
Vildmose’s history, botany and geology.

Asaa
Asaa, population 1,300
Asaa is a fishing village by the Kattegatt. In the
period 1914-1968 there was a railroad between Asaa
and Dronninglund, and from there to Aalborg.
Asaa’s advanced harbour was built in 1906 at the
end of a 450-metre-long dam. There is a cosy
atmosphere at the harbour, as well as a nice beach.

Voergaard Slot/Voergaard Castle
Voergaard 6, 5 kilometres. East of Flauenskjold
www.voergaardslot.dk

The beautiful Voergaard Castle is perhaps
Denmark’s finest Renaissance castle, and it has the
widest moat. The oldest part is from 1481, the most
recent from 1590. At the time of the Reformation,

Voergaard became the King’s property, but in 1578
Frederik II handed it over to Karen Krabbe, whose
daughter, Ingeborg Skeel, built the Renaissance
wing. Voergaard’s large portal was originally
intended for Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød.

In addition to the beautiful interior in the wings,
there are also various works of art by El Greco,
Goya, Raphael and Rubens, and porcelain from the
courts of Ludvig XIV, Ludvig XVI and Napoleon.

It is said that Ingeborg Skeel haunts Voergaard.

Dorf Møller/Dorf Mills
Dorfgade by Storskovvej, Dorf Kirkeby
The Old Mill Pond is the centre of an idyllic
nature scenery and two mills; a water mill and a
windmill. The owners of Dronninglund Castle built
the water mill in the 17th century. In this place the
water could drop 4 metres and thereby generate
enough power for grinding corn.

Towards the end of the 18th century, corn was
increasingly used as animal fodder, so in 1887 a
Dutch windmill was added.

Jyske Ås
Storskovvej, 5 kilometres. north of
Dronninglund
Jyske Ås is a ridge located 25 kilometres northwest
of Dronninglund. Large parts of the ridge are forest-
clad, and the hilly terrain offers many excellent hikes.
The highest point is knøsen (136 metres), which is
situated in Dronninglund Storskov.

Dronninglund Slot/Dronninglund
Castle
Slotsvej, Dronninglund
www.dronninglund-slot.dk
www.dronninglundkirke.dk
Dronninglund Castle’s history goes back to the 12th
century. It was originally a Benedictine monastery
called Hundslund. The place was Crown lands for a
time, but in 1581 it was sold to a lord who
expanded it considerably by adding the chapel,
among other things. The castle is named after its
owner Queen Charlotte Amalie, who acquired it in
1690. It remained in the possession of the Royal
family until 1729. Today the chapel functions as
parish church and the castle has been turned into a

hotel and conference centre.

Frederikshavn
Frederikshavn, population 23,500
www.toppenafdanmark.dk
www.frederikshavnkirke.dk
www.frederikshavnkunstmuseum.dk
Frederikshavn was originally named Fladstrand,
(Flatbeach) but, as the present name suggests, the
city is characterized by its large port with constant
traffic between Denmark and Sweden and Norway.
The many Swedish and Norwegian tourists give the
city an international atmosphere.

The city’s attractions include Frederikshavn Church
(Kirkepladsen) from 1890-1892. The church is built
in Roman style, inspired by Aachen Cathedral. In
terms of seats, it is one of Denmark’s largest
churches. The Altarpiece is by Micael Ancher.

Close to the church stands the Powder Tower

(Krudttårnet, Kragholmen 2), which is a defence
tower from 1686-1690. On the tower’s gun deck
there are pieces of artillery on display, and there is a
an exhibition about local history, including
Fladstrand Citadel, which the Powder Tower was a
part of.

Frederikshavn Art Museum (Parallelvej 14) hosts
various exhibitions, and the museum has the
world’s largest collection of ex libris.

To the southwest of the city stands the 60-metre-
tall Cloos Tower (Brønderslevvej 61). Including the
hill on which it is standing, the tower reaches a
height of 160 metres above sea level, and it offers a
fantastic view of the area.

Hirsholmene
Hirsholmene, 0.45 km², Population 6
www.sns.dk
Seven kilometres off the coast of Frederikshavn lie
the islets called Hirsholmene, of which only one,
Hirsholm, is settled. Hirsholmene belonged to the
king until 1583, and again from 1883. The islets can
be reached by mail boat, and it is their isolated
location that makes them interesting. They function
as a sanctuary for several species of bird, and the
most characteristic building is the lighthouse from

1886.

various exhibitions, but the main attraction is the
Ellingå Ship from 1163, found in Elling Stream.
There are also various ship models and other things
constituting a small naval museum. The wings house
Jutland’s Resistance Museum (Det Jyske
Modstandsmuseum) and a cart exhibition, among
other things. The large Coast Battery, built on the
ridge along Kattegat in 1944, is also part of the
museum. The many gun positions southwest of the
Manor constitute a fortress 70 metres above sea level

Sæby

building is located in the 16th century Consul
Ørum’s House.

To the west of the town centre lies the Manor
Museum Sæbygård (Herregårdsmuseet Sæbygård,
Sæbygårdsvej 49), which shows manor interior from
the last 200 years. Sæbygård was built in several
phases; the oldest preserved part is the main
building built in Renaissance style in 1576.

Råbjerg Mile/Råbjerg Dune
Råbjerg Mile Vej, 9 klometres North of Ålbæk
www.skovognatur.dk
Råbjerg Mile is a 20-metre-tall migrating dune
covering an area of about 1 km². The dune travels
east at a speed of 15 metres per year, covering
everything in its path. Behind the dune, dune lakes
are formed in the hollows created by the drifting
sand.

Skagen, located on Skagen’s Odde, is Denmark’s

northernmost town. The city and the surrounding
area are known for their delightful atmosphere, with
yellow houses and several tourist attractions.

Skagen’s Museum (Brøndumsvej 4) is an exquisite
art museum, where works of the famous Skaw
Painters are exhibited. Michael and Anna Ancher
were Skaw Painters, and their house (Markvej 2-4)
is open to visitors. It is also possible to visit Villa

At Skagen Museum (P.K. Nielsensvej 8-10) visitors
can learn about the history of the area with a focus
on fishing and navigation. Skagen also has an Amber
Museum (Sct. Laurentiivej 60E).

Just to the north of Skagen lies Skagen Odde Nature
Centre (Batterivej 51), designed by Jørn Utzon. The
Centre facilitates interaction between Man and
Nature.

En route to Denmark’s northernmost tip stands the
46-metre-tall Skagen Lighthouse

(Fyrvej) from 1858. It offers a splendid view of
Skagen and Grenen, the place where the two parts of
the North Sea, the Kattegat and the Skagerrak meet.
Denmark’s northernmost point lies just northwest of
Grenen.

A bit to the south of Skagen town, in the northern
part of Skagen Dune Plantation, lies The Buried
Church (Den Tilsandede Kirke, Gamle Landevej).
The church tower, which is visible above the sand,
is from Skagen’s previous parish church, St
Laurentii Kirke, which had been almost buried in
sand before most of the church was torn down in
1795. The Tower was intended as a seamark, but
there are still parts of the old church buried under
several feet of sand.

century until the
Reformation, when it returned to the Crown. In
1669 it was handed over to nobles and functioned as

destinations for both Danish and foreign visitors.
Throughout the season there is a lively but relaxed
atmosphere. One of the attractions is a sweets
factory (Torvet 1), situated in the cosy old part of
town.

Despite its historical status as a fishing village,
Løkken has no harbour. It is one of the few
remaining towns where the boats are still hauled up
on the beach.

On a long stretch along the town’s northern beach
there are bunkers from WW II. These were part of

sand made it difficult to keep it accessible for staff,
or even visible from the water. The lighthouse was
closed in 1968, and it was decided to leave it to the
whims of Nature. The staff quarters at the foot of
the lighthouse are now partly buried.

important historical events for the area.

Mariager Fiord
www.fjord-ine.dk

kilometres from Hobro to the west to the Kattegat
to the east. It is the longest of Eastern Jutland’s
fiords, and the width is between 250 metres and 4.5

kilometres. It is possible to go for a sail trip on the
Fiord from several starting points, including Hobro,
Bramslev, Mariager, Dania, Hadsund and Odden.

Passengers experience a varied landscape, and the
fiord itself varies greatly, from the shallow waters

Mariagerfjord Municipality
Mariager was named in honour of the Virgin Mary
because the town had its beginnings in 1430 around
a Brigittine monastery that grew in size and wealth
until the Reformation. The centre of Mariager, with
its many half-timbered houses and cobblestone
streets, is a nice place for walks.

Mariager Museum (Kirkegade 4A) is located in the
old Merchant Manor from ca 1700. The museum
exhibits artefacts from the area south of Mariager
Fiord.

Mariager Church (Kirkebakken 6) is a remnant of
the town’s old Abbey Church from 1446. Part of the
church was torn down during reconstruction in
1788-1789.

Denmark’s Salt Centre (Ny Havnevej 6) tells the
story of salt production, which has been an
important industry in the area. It is also possible to
visit a salt mine.

ved Randersvej, Handest
www.mhvj.dk
It is possible to go for an idyllic and historically
interesting ride on the preserved railway line
between Mariager and Handest. The 19-kilometre-
long line was used by passenger trains until 1966,
and after another 3 years of using only goods trains,
the preserved railway was established. The Railway
has collected rolling stock so typical of a private
railway milieu from the mid-20th century.

Nykøbing Mors
Nykøbing Mors, Population 9,150
www.dueholmkloster.dk
www.nykoebingmorskirke.dk
Nykøbing is the largest city on the island of Mors,
and its history goes back to a point well before 1299,
when it achieved market town privileges.

Dueholm Monastery (Dueholmgade 7) is the only
monastery on Mors. Located in the old monastery
buildings is Morsland’s Historical Museum, which
houses an interesting and varied collection of
artefacts, from the Viking Age onward. The place
was established as a Johanite monastery around 1370,
but later it became a manor. The main building is
from around 1450, but the side wing is newer.

The foundry Museum (Nørregade 13) depicts the
history of Morsø Iron Foundry since its opening in
1853.

The city church, Nykøbing Mors Church (Kirkegade
2), was built in 1891 in neo-Gothic style. It replaced
the previous St Clemen’s Church, which was
demolished in 1889. The tower is 43 metres tall and
can be seen from afar.

The Sallingsund Bridge
Sallingsundbroen, 5 kilometres south of
Nykøbing Mors
The Sallingsund Bridge is a 1.717-metre-long bridge
with a clearance of 26 metres. Before the bridge
opened on 30 May 1978, the ferries Pinen and
Plagen transported people and vehicles across the
sound between the cities of Nykøbing Mors and
Glyngøre.

Móler Museum
Skarrehagevej 8, Hesselbjerg
Móler is found on several of the islands in
Limfiorden, and the geologically interesting móler
cliffs were formed around 55 million years ago.
Móler is a type of sedimentary rock consisting of 30
% clay and 70 % fossilized shells. Both the móler
layer and layers of volcanic ashes can be seen at the
museum, and its production and use is described.

The Móler Museum also has a collection of fossils
found in the móler.

There are several nature trails starting at the
museum, which visitors can take on trips around
the area.

Skarregaard
Feggesundvej 53, Sejerslev
The farm Skarregaard is one of the oldest on Mors,
although the present-day wings are from the period
1840-1910. The farm has been turned into a
museum focusing on rural life around 1950. There
are several nature trails on the 490-acre-area, and
features traditional Danish domestic animals, such
as ducks, geese, sheep and goats.

Mors
www.hojriisslot.dk
The idyllically located Højriis Castle goes back at
least to the Middle Ages. The first known owner of
the building was the knight, Johan Skarpenborg, at
the end of the 14th century. The castle got its
present neo-Gothic appearance in 1859, when the
characteristic 32-metre-tall tower was built.

The castle has a lovely park with both old and new
facilities. The medicinal garden is particularly
interesting.

Jesperhus
Legindvej 30.5 kilometre s southwest of
Nykøbing Mors
www.jesperhus.dk
Jesperhus is a large beautiful flower garden with
varied entertainment. The Garden opened in 1966
and its 10 acres are divided into three main sections
with lovely flowers and trails. Among the many
things on offer are the “Sense Garden”, a Theme
Garden inspired by the fairytales of Hans Christian
Andersen, and a Jungle Zoo with butterflies, snakes
and alligators. There is also a separate entertainment
park, appealing to children in particular.

Mors’ Ferry Routes
Feggesundvej, 20 kilometres north of Nykøbing
Mors
Næssundvej, 2.5 kilometres. southwest of
Karby
Around Denmark there are various crossings where
cosy ferries take passengers to the various islands.
There are two bridges between Mors and the
mainland; Sallingsund to the east and Vilsund to the
west, but riding the ferry across Limfiorden is still a
unique experience.

To the north, Feggesund can be crossed onboard
the ferry M/F Sallingsund (1958), and to the
southwest the ferry M/F Næssund (1964) sails the
sound after which it is named.

Rebild Municipality
Rebild Kommune

Rold Skov/Rold Forest
South of Skørping
Rold Skov is, with around 86 km², Denmark’s largest
forest area. Most of the forest consists of coniferous
trees, but the hilly landscape also has hardwood
forest, lakes and wellsprings.

Jutland’s Forest Garden (Den Jyske Skovhave,
Møldrupvej 22, 2 kilometres south of Skørping) is
also situated in Rold Forest. It has an arboretum
with around 150 different trees and bushes from the
Northern hemisphere. The garden was established in
the period 1886-1902, and today it is home to some
of Denmark’s large trees volume-wise.

Rebild Bakker/Rebild Hills
Rebildvej 29, Rebild
www.rebild.org
Rebild Hills is a beautiful area, which was bought in
1912 to establish a place where Danes, Danish-
Americans and Americans could meet to celebrate
the close ties between the two countries. The idea
originated with the Danish-American Max Henius,
who planned the first Rebild Celebrations for 4 Jul
1912 to mark the American Independence Day. But
due to the passing away of King Frederik VIII in
May of 1912, the first celebrations were postponed
until 5th August. Ever since, the Rebild
Celebrations have been held on the 4th July every
year in the hilly moorland.

In the Rebild Park is the museum called Lincoln
Log Cabin (Blokhus Museum). The cabin was built
of cedar wood in Washington State and later
shipped to Denmark. Lincoln Log Cabin is a
Danish immigration museum, which tells the story
of the ca. 300,000 Danes who travelled across the
Atlantic to the Land of Opportunity.

Thingbæk Kalkminer/Thingbæk
Limestone Caves
Røde Møllevej 4, 2 kilometres. west of Rebild
www.roldskovmuseerne.dk
Thingbæk Limestone Caves were established in 1926,
and limestone was mined there until 1936. The
limestone is easily accessible because a salt horst is
pushing the limestone towards the surface, but it was
not a very profitable business. The owner, Anders
Bundgård, changed the mine into an art exhibition
centre; first and foremost to display his own art,
which includes the Cimbrian Bull in Aalborg and the
Gefion Fountain in Copenhagen.

Different exhibitions and concerts are arranged in
the impressive 8-12-metre-tall galleries, which are
also home to 5 different species of bat.

Lille Blåkilde/Little Blue Spring
Rebild Kirkevej, 2 km. NV for Skørping
Lille Blåkilde spring is with its 150 litres of water per
second the richest in Denmark. The water is seven
degrees Celsius and bubbles out of the ground from

several craters, which allow passage of the water
through the limestone layer.

local history of the Thisted and Thy regions. Several
interesting finds are exhibited there.

Bulbjerg
Bulbjergvej, 10 kilometres. north of Frøstrup
The limestone hill, Bulbjerg, is one of the most
impressive natural features in the area. The 47-
metre-high hillock dramatically overlooks the coast,
and it is a favourite breeding ground for many of
the area’s birds.

The cliff, Skarreklit, used to tower 16 metres above
the water off the coast of Bulbjerg, but it tumbled
during a storm in 1978 and became submerged.

Vigsø Batteri/Vigsø Battery
Redningsvejen, Vigsø Strand, 0,8 kilometres
north of Vigsø
Vigsø Battery is part of the coastal fortifications built
during the Second World War and known as The
Atlantic Wall. At Vigsø there are around 20 bunkers
lying close together, some still on the beach while
others have been claimed by the ocean. The Battery
had machine gun positions, anti-aircraft artillery,
four 10.5 cm guns and personnel bunkers.

Hanstholm
Hanstholm, population 2,300
www.hanstholm.dk
www.museumscenterhanstholm.dk
Hanstholm is the north-western-most point in
Denmark, and it is situated amidst a grand natural
landscape. Fishing boats and ferries sail past on en
route to the Faroe Islands and Norway, and to the
south there is a large nature reserve. The town sits
on top of a limestone cliff overlooking the local
harbour, built in 1925.

Hanstholm Museum (Molevej 29) was built during
The Second World War as Northern Europe’s
strongest fortress. The museum includes the bunker
where one of the city’s four 38 cm guns was installed.

Next to the bunker there is an exhibition about the
Atlantic Wall, and nearby are the remnants of three
other canon positions. It is also possible to ride on
the old munitions train. The Danish movie
“Olsenbanden i Jylland“ (The Olsen Gang in Jutland)
has a scene where the gang rides this train.
Hanstholm Fortress and the Vara Battery in
Kristiansand (Norway) were built to guard against
the Navy of the allied Forces entering the Kattegat.

On the western part of Hanstholm islet stands the
Hanstholm Beacon (Tårnvej). It was built in 1843,
and was at that time the brightest in the world.

Thy National Park
Between Hanstholm and Agger Tange
Thy National Park, established in 2007, was the first
National Park in Denmark. The Park is situated by
the North Sea, and stretches from Hanstholm in
the north to Agger Tange in the south.

The Park is altogether 243.7 km², of which the
northernmost part, the 65 km² Hanstholm Game
Preserve, is the largest preserved single area in the
country. The Park’s landscape is unique and varied:
coast, dunes, moors, lakes and agricultural areas
alternate and provide a rich habitat for animals and
birds.

The Park’s highest point, the 56-metre-tall

“Iceberg” (at the end of Hindingvej), and the Bird
Tower (at the end of Sårupvej) afford excellent
panoramic views. It is also possible to drive through
the reserve along Kystvejen.
