UNIT 1: SIMPLE SENTENCES WITH COMPLEX
PREDICATES
A. OBJECTIVES:
- Analyzing the components of predicates in English and Vietnamese simple sentences.
- Consolidating and improving students’ vocabulary and lexical usage.
- Improving students’ skills of textual analysis and comprehension.

B. CONTENTS:
- Have sts discuss sentence structures in English and Vietnamese.

Parts of a sentence:

Sentence = Subject + Predicate
Predicate = Verb phrase + Completer
Completer = Object/ Complement + (Adverb)

The predicate:
- The verb and verb phrase
- The completer
 The object


The complement

 The adverbial
- Have sts analyze the examples in groups, then check with the whole class.
Ex:

(1) He gave me a variety of gifts on St Valentine’s Day.
(2) Our science correspondent sees this new invention as the answer to many of our
problems.
(3) I don’t really understand what he explains.
