Meet Al Simm
Al Simm has been working in metal for over twenty years. In 2002,
he opened his own business, Avon River Metalworks, located in
Upper Falmouth in the lovely Annapolis Valley.
Al takes much of his inspiration from the fertile fields, lush gardens,

and wild places around his home. He puts his own unique touches on
each of the pieces he creates, and no two are exactly alike. He
welcomes suggestions from customers, too. “If you can show me an
idea, I’ll create it in metal”, he says.

Al’s work ranges from tabletop sculptures and individual flowers to
lifesize (and beyond) items for your yard and garden. He specializes
in recycling oil barrels and other metal items, but also works in new
copper, steel and aluminum.

Al is a juried member of the Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council,
and attends numerous trade and artisan shows around Nova Scotia.

He’s been featured in articles online and in print, and exhibits his
work at galleries including Harvest in Wolfville and Art 1274 Hollis
in Halifax.

Sculptures can have a
variety of finishes and
metals, including stainless
steel
You can leave them
unfinished and allow them
to weather with the
elements, have a protective

varnish put over the piece,
or have the sculpture
partially or completely
painted.
Al’s sculptures come in a variety
of sizes, and with different
numbers of flowers or fruit
attached to them. Prices vary
accordingly.

Probably the most popular of
Al’s work to date, and a lot of

Along with displaying his work at shows
such as the Nova Scotia Designer Craft
Council summer and Christmas shows,
Avon Metal Riverworks has pieces on
display at a number of selected galleries,
plant nurseries and garden centres in the
region. Al is sometimes able to come and do
demonstrations during special events:
contact him for an appearance at your
farmer’s market, art day, and more!

Poppies or Anemones
Made with whimsy
Are they poppies, or
are they anemones?
You decide. Like real

flowers, no two are
exactly alike, and Al
often uses “found
items” such as spark
plugs to further make
an unusual and striking
creation.

$350.00

Signs, Signs, everywhere signs

A signpost from Avon Metal Riverworks,
whether bearing your family name or your house
number, is a distinctive and permanent
enhancement for your home or business. Al
partners with Heritage Memorials for name and
number signs made from polished granite slabs.
*Or, if desired, you can put your own creation on
the signpost. The choice is yours.

Morning Glory Signpost $1200
Iris Signpost $1200
Cattail Signpost $1000
Rose trellis Signpost $2000
* Granite signs are an additional 250-300

These cattails

don’t multiply
or crowd out
your pond
Cattails make a terrific
sculpture to accent a water
feature. They can be placed
in the water, or settled into
the ground beside the pond
or stream. Each of Al’s
sculptures is secured on
your site with a steel post
that holds the sculpture
upright and in place, but
can be removed if you want
to move it somewhere else.
Prices range from $140 for
the miniature (tabletop) to
$1000 for a cattail signpost.
Medium sized sculptures
are $400 or $700 depending
on the number of cattails in
the piece.

Roses and Irises
Can be made as individual
flowers or created into a
sculpture with stems and
foliage. They can be given a
natural finish, covered with

a high gloss protective coat,
or painted for a more
customized look.
Individual roses: $140
Iris sculpture $1200
Iris signpost $1200

Sculptures around Windsor

If you’re out shopping in the town of Windsor,
you’ll see quite a few of Al’s sculptures
permanently displayed in the downtown area.

Lotus $900
Lilies $1200
