The outbreak of COVID-19 in 2019 has led to many organizations converting their
work status to online to decrease the spread of the virus and to ensure a safe work
environment for everyone. However, people still questioned whether if working online or
people tend to say work from home can still keep the same quality compared to offline
working or not. But according to an article by Apollotechnical (2021) said ' Performance can
increase up to 13% by working from home ', by then this essay will evaluate the reasons why
people should work from home especially in this pandemic season. This essay will contain
the meaning of working from home, the benefit, the importance that suggests people should
support working online, and also some backside of it.
First, the definition of work from home is work being done remotely, instead of at an
office. The phrase ‘work from home’ was being used when the COVID-19 pandemic started
to spread last year. When everyone has to stay in lockdown for months and everything was
freeze including the office, so then people started to change their work online. Work from
home has become every organization's solution when they have to face a pandemic that lasted
for almost 2 years.
Furthermore, as work from home has brought lots of benefits for the company
especially when they are in lockdown. The first benefit that working from home shows to the
company is increased employee productivity. According to Apollo Technical (2021) article,
they said 77% of the population who work remotely at least a few times per month exhibit an
increase in productivity. There is also a study conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics
(2019), the result showed before the COVID-19 pandemic 24% of people did some or all of
their work at home on days they worked, and 82% of people did some or all of their work at
their workplace. In the same study conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it was noted
that people in financial operations, business, and management, professional occupations, and
related occupations work from home more often than other occupations. A different study by
E.Glenn Dutcher placed in 2012 shows that office worker who was assigned to do boring
tasks, their performance was better and faster when they work in the regular office setting, the
reasons are because home-life distractions are decreased the worker's productivity when they
did not enjoy the work. However, after the COVID-19 pandemic started things has changed
compared to 2012. The article from Apollo Technical (2021) stated that working from home
has been easier since communication software is getting better day by day, they also stated
that working from home is producing a better turnaround on projects, and increasing
productivity. Moreover, research by Prodoscore (2020) reports there is an increase in
productivity by 47% since March of 2020. On the other hand, working from home also
lowers turnover rates according to Indeed's article (2021). Turnover rates have been every
organization's problem, but with remote work, the employee can keep their job since they can
work from anywhere also the company itself will experience lower turnover rates as they
have flexible schedules and high job satisfaction among the employees. Besides, longer
business days are also a benefit for working from home, having employees in different time
zones allows companies to extend their business days (Indeed, 2021). This benefit could be
effective for organizations that focused on customer service where they could provide their
service 24/7 for the customers. On top of that, it also helps the company attract new talent
according to Nibusiness's article (n.d), by working online can be open lots of advantages for
the company in the job market over competitors that do not have home working as an option
for their employees, and it will be easier when recruiting talents from anywhere. A small
conclusion after showing all of the benefits that working online could bring to companies, it
is clearly stated that working from home is being recommended for organizations especially
in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Due to all the advantages of working from home, it has become an idea for
organizations to consider whether they should change their working status online. The Forbes
article by Aaron Vick (2020) stated that companies should allow their employees to work
remotely at this time. In addition to all the advantages, the company receives when they
switch to an online working status but in this pandemic, it is important to switch their work to
online mostly in case of any more lockdown or the new Omicron strain. The first thing that
companies need to take into consideration in terms of switching to online is employees'
safety. According to Forbes's article (2020), working remotely may be important for safety
during a pandemic, but throughout the year it could be easy for the company to handle works
for employees and also protect them from the COVID-19 virus. Moreover, if the company
still lets the employees work offline, there is a risk of infecting between employees and
putting themselves in danger of not properly resting ( Vicks, 2020). Apart from safety,
working online will give employees autonomy more than offline, autonomy is one of the
factors that will affect the work environment the most, when employees do not have any right
to freely express their ideas it might decrease the productivity of the company. Having
switched to work online, employees will feel their boss trusts them, it will be more
comfortable for the employees than their boss casually looking at their screen every few
minutes. By then it is suggested in the Forbes's article (2020) that if the company truly wants
their employees to feel autonomous and empowered then allow them to work remotely. The
article also said ' Instead of having to work around everyone else's schedule and needs,
remote workers have much more flexibility to go about their day the way they see fit'. By
being empowered, not only the employees feel trusted but also it will increase their
motivation. The employees will have the incentive to develop a home working routine that
suits them better and this can contribute towards their motivation, moreover, it also involves
in the increasing of loyal from the employees to their company ( Nibusiness, n.d). Aaron Vick
once said in his Forbes article (2020) that ' Remote work has many employers balking at the
idea of having less physical face time with their employees. But the truth is that going remote
may be the best thing you do for your business'.
However, everything will have their backside, and work from home is not an
exception. The first disadvantage that work from home could bring to the companies is it
might not suit every individual, some people might prefer the routine and structure that being
provide in an office working environment and even some employees would rather choose to
interact face to face with their colleagues than interact online (Nibusiness, n.d). Secondly, it
would be hard for the managers to manage home workers and monitor their performance, as
it been mentioned before, each individual will have a different choice, some might prefer
working online but some are not being able to work online. On the other hand, there is a
potential burnout as when working at the office it created a clear boundary between home-life
and work-life, but now when everything is being conducted at home, some individuals might
not be able to balance their work-life and their personal time that will lead to an increase of
stress and inevitable burnout. Because of that, companies are suggested to encourage their
employees to take a regular break and remind them about the importance of taking time for
their personal life. Likewise, it may impact the employees' mental health as they feel isolated
from their colleagues, and sometimes they are unable to find a routine that suits them most,
because of that in Nibusiness's article (n.d), they suggested that companies should create
more opportunities for their employees to stay connected by creating a server which keeps the
communication regularly and help everyone catch up their work, moreover it also solve the
problem of managing employees, by creating a server the manager could easily track their
staff's performance and check all the works that is done by them. In the end, everything will
have its solution, in this state of the COVID-19 pandemic and also the new Omicron strain, it
is believed that working from home is the best way to keep the company working.
In conclusion, work from home is being suggested as now the world is still struggling
with the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides its negative impact, the benefit that work from home
brought to companies are clearly shown in numbers and facts. Nowadays, people are really
sensitive when talking about their health issues so work from home is the only solution that
could guarantee to keep everyone safe from the COVID-19 virus. Aaron Vick has said in his
Forbes article (2020), ' Letting your employees work remotely is a huge decision for you to
make, but shouldn't be a decision that you regret'.
