word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 26 to 30.
Part of what makes summers so hot is also what causes thunderstorms. As heat from the sun beats down
on Earth, the heat evaporates some of the water in lakes and oceans. The evaporated water stays in the air. This
evaporated water makes the air feel heavy and humid. Humid air is what makes you feel hot and sticky (26)
_______ the summer.
Warm humid air usually does not stay in one place. The wind can move it higher in the sky (27) _______
it will cool off. When warm humid air cools, it forms clouds. As more water is moved from lakes and oceans
to the air, the clouds get bigger and bigger.
Since summer, the air near the ground is hotter than it is during other seasons of the year. When this hot
air mixes with cool air from (28) _______ area, there will be changes in the weather. Greater differences
between the (29) _______ of the hot and cold air will cause greater changes in the weather. Imagine putting an
ice (30) _______ in a warm drink. As soon as the ice hits the warm drink, it will crack and pop. But if you put
the ice cube in a cool drink, it will not crack or pop as much. When warmer and cooler clouds get close to one
another, there may be some popping and cracking as the weather changes. There may be more clouds or storms.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 31 to 35.
Stars have been significant features in the design of many United States coins and their number has
varied from one to forty-eight stars. Most of the coins issued from about 1799 to the early years of the twentieth
century bore thirteen stars representing the thirteen original colonies.
3

Curiously enough, the first American silver coins, issued in 1794, had fifteen stars because by that time
Vermont and Kentucky have joined the Union. At that time it was apparently the intention of mint officials to
add a star for each new state. Following the admission of Tennessee in 1796, for example, some varieties of
half dimes, dimes, and half dollars were produced with sixteen stars.

As more states were admitted to the Union, however, it quickly became apparent that this scheme would not
prove practical and the coins from 1798 were issued with only thirteen Stars - one for each of the original
colonies. Due to an error at the mint, one variety of the 1828 half-cent was issued with only twelve stars. There
is also a variety of the large cent with only 12 stars, but this is the result of a die break and is not a true error.
Question 31: What is the main topic of the passage?
A. Stars on American coins
B. The teaching of astronomy in state universities
C. Colonial stamps and coins
D. The star as a national symbol of the United States
Question 32: The expression "Curiously enough" is used because the author finds it strange that _____.
A. Tennessee was the first state to use half dimes
B. Vermont and Kentucky joined the Union in 1794
C. silver coins with fifteen stars appeared before coins with thirteen
D. no silver coins were issued until 1794
Question 33: Why was a coin produced in 1828 with only twelve stars?
A. Tennessee had left the Union.
B. The mint made a mistake.
C. There were twelve states at the time.
D. There is a change in design policy.
Question 34: Which of the following is NOT mentioned as the denomination of an American coin?
A. Half nickel
B. Half-dollar
C. Hall cent
D. Half dime
Question 35: The word "their" in line 1 refers to _________.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct

answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Carnegie Hall, the famous concert hall in New York City, has again undergone a restoration. While this is
not the first, it is certainly the most extensive in the building’s history. As a result of this new restoration,
Carnegie Hall once again has the quality of sound that it had when it was first built. Carnegie Hall owes its
existence to Andrew Carnegie, the wealthy owner of a steel company in the late 1800s. The hall was finished
in 1891 and quickly gained a reputation as an excellent performing arts hall where accomplished musicians
gained fame. Despite its reputation, however, the concert hall suffered from several detrimental renovations
over the years. During the Great Depression, when fewer people could afford to attend performances, the
directors sold part of the building to commercial businesses. As a result, a coffee shop was opened in one
corner of the building, for which the builders replaced the brick and terra cotta walls with windowpanes. A
renovation in 1946 seriously damaged the acoustical quality of the hall when the makers of the film Carnegie
Hall cut a gaping hole in the dome of the ceiling to allow for lights and air vents. The hole was later covered
with short curtains and a fake ceiling but the hall never sounded the same afterwards.
In 1960, the violinist Isaac Stern became involved in restoring the hall after a group of real estate
developers unveiled plans to demolish Carnegie Hall and build a high-rise office building on the site.
4

This threat spurred Stern to rally public support for Carnegie Hall and encourage the City of New York to
buy the property. The movement was successful, and the concert hall is now owned by the city. In the current
restoration, builders tested each new material for its sound qualities, and they replaced the hole in the ceiling
with a dome. The builders also restored the outer walls to their original appearance and closed the coffee shop.
Carnegie has never sounded better, and its prospects for the future have never looked more promising.
