INTRODUCTION
Henry Fayol, a major contributor to the administrative principles approach, outlined
14 general principles of management, several of which are a part of management
philosophy today. For example:
 Unity of command
 Division of work
 Unity of direction
 Scalar chain

Unity of command
Each subordinate receives orders from one and only one
superior. Otherwise, authority, discipline, order, and stability
are threatened.

Division of work
Managerial work and technical work are amenable to
specialization to produce more and better work with the
same amount of effort.

Unity of direction
Similar activities in an organization should be grouped
together under one manager. There should be one
head/superior and also one plan for a group having common
objectives. It requires for maintaining unity in action to
achieve the common goals of the group.

Scalar chain
A chain of authority extends from the top to the bottom of
the organization and should include every employee.

CONCLUSION

CONCLUSION 1
Fayol felt that these principles could be applied in any
organizational setting.

CONCLUSION 2

It was the reality of Fayol's day-to-day managing, seeing
what worked and what didn't, that informed his 14
Principles of Management. By focusing on administrative
over technical skills, the principles are some of the
earliest examples of treating management as a
profession.
