Summary
The inhibitory effect in vitro of the Urena lobata L. (Malvaceae) on d-glucosidase enzyme was investigated. As the
root has been known the best part in this term, hypoglycemic activity in vivo of the plant hairy roots produced by coculture with Agrobacterium rhizogenes ATTC 15834 and those cultured in vitro or hydroponically were focused on. The
ethanol extracts from the obtained hydroponic hairy roots (IC5o = 3.963 pg/m0presented the same value of IC50 as the
natural roots (IC50 = 3.851 pg/m0 and so, significantly inferior to the hairy roots in vitro (IC50 = 6.692 pg/m0. Moreover, in
alloxan-induced diabetic mice, blood glucose level of the group treated with either of the three tested extracts showed
a slight decrease as compared to the untreated group. In short, the hairy roots of Urena lobata L. proved potential in
supporting anti-diabetic type 2 treatment.
