Endangered Species
No animal species can survive indefinitely on the Earth centuries ago, species went extinct from natural causes,
for example, they were unable to adapt to bad weather and other difficult conditions. However, animals are now
dying out faster than ever because of human activities. It is estimated that, until the 18th century, one species
disappeared from the Earth every four years. By the 19th century, this had increased to one species per year. By 1975,
was 1,000 species per year, and today animals are disappearing at the alarming rate of more than 40,000 species per
year.
There are many factors that can cause an animal or plant species to become endangered, and one big one is the
destruction of their habitats. Deforestation and soil, air, and water pollution are usually the main culprits. For
example, the population of critically Sumatran orangutans is now less than 10,000 on their home island of Sumatra,
Indonesia, due to deforestation and farming.
Another cause of endangerment is from humans exploiting wild animals. Uncontrolled hunting of whales in
the last century, for example, resulted in many whale species becoming critically endangered. The high demands for
animal parts stems from their use in foods or medicines or their values as decorative objects. For example, the ivory
tusks of elephants are used to make jewelry, and the price is high enough that people risk being arrested and jailed
to go after these animals

3

Introducing a non-native species to an environment by humans, either intentionally or by accident can also
cause species endangerment. In Florida, large pet snakes such as the anaconda and the python have been released
into the large Everglades swamp. The snakes have thrived in their new environment, and now compete with and may
soon overwhelm the swamp's alligators.
Organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the International Unity
Conservation of Nature (IUCN) try to raise awareness of threatened animals and plants. These organizations
collaborate with government agencies to save threatened or endangered species and to make new laws that will

protect them. But to really protect plant and animal species now and in the future, the public needs to be educated on
the value of keeping these species alive.
36. According to the passage, what happened between the 18 century and now?
A. The amount of human activity increased.
B. Animals were less able to adapt to the weather.
C. More animals started dying from natural causes.
D. The weather conditions became more disadvantageous to animals.
37. Why have many whale species become endangered?
A. Their habitat is being destroyed.
B. The high demand for decorative objects and jewelry.
C. They have been hunted in great numbers.
D. A non-native species has been introduced to their environment.
38. Which is NOT mentioned as a cause of species endangerment?
A. introduction of non-native species
B. spread of diseases
C. unrestricted hunting
D. habitat destruction
39. Which animal is native to the Everglades swamp?
A. anacondas
B. pythons
C. large snakes
D. alligators
40. What is the main idea of the final paragraph?
A. Governments and organizations must work together to be effective.
B. The most important thing is to raise awareness and educate people.
C. Laws are needed to protect these endangered species.
D. The public should know the value of animal parts in foods, medicines, and decoration.

Read the passage, and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D for each question.
The Rise of Robots
As kids, our grandparents frequently scared us by talking about how difficult life was when they were
growing up. They mentioned walking miles to school in the snow, or doing hours of manual labour for little pay.
Life has changed greatly since then, and it seems to get easier year by year. In fact, with the help of robots we soon
might have to do much at all. But is this a good thing?
By 2030, it's estimated that robotics will be a $10 billion business worldwide. Companies are already starting
to integrate them into the workforce. The electronics manufacturer Foxconn is drawing up plans to launch a factory
within the next 10 years that’s completely staffed by robot workers. Meanwhile, an American company Briggo has
invented a robot that serves gourmet-quality coffee to customers. With the push of a button it will crush coffee beans,
measure exact quantities of water, and even wave a steam want to ensure customers get the perfect cream on top.
Unlike human baristas, it can serve multiple drinks at once and work all day and night without a break.
Robots are also invading our homes. The Rooma is mini-robot that vacuums rooms automatically according
to a schedule. The Robomow is a device that will cut the grass for you while you sit in the shade. Then there's the
Nanda clocky, an alarm clock that makes sure that even the deepest sleepers get up on time. The clock is attached to
a pair of wheels, and it will randomly move around the room. Once you finally catch it, you're probably too wake to
hit the snooze button. Although these early home robots are somewhat basic, they will likely become more capable
as times goes on.
Although robots certainly help us to eliminate tedious tasks, many people are concerned about a future filled
with robots. Some fear that humanity will start to decline if machines do everything for us. Others have even warned
about the robot rebellion, in which robots become so smart that they may decide to turn on their masters. These ideas
may seem a bit far-fetched but there are certainly lots of questions that need to be answered before everyone opens
up to the idea of a robotic future.
36. According to the first paragraph, how is life changed since our grandparents' time?
A. Children have to walk longer distances to school.
B. The education system has got much worse.
C. Things aren't as hard as they once were.
D. It hasn't changed much at all.
37. How is Briggo's invention superior to human workers?

A. It is better at conversation.
B. It never has to stop.
C. It is more knowledgeable about coffee-making
D. It can operate machinery.
38. What would happen if you pressed the snooze button?
A. The alarm clock would turn off forever.
B. You would have to wake up immediate
C. Nothing would happen at all.
D. The alarm would stop, but go off again soon.
39. Which of the following is NOT true about the concerns over robotics?
A. Robots may be dominant at the workplace.
B. Robots may do some harm to humans.
C. The ideas of robotics may seem far-fetched.
D. It takes some time for people to accept robots.
40. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Some reasons why people don't accept robots yet
B. A very amusing science-fiction story about robots
C. How people in local communities are supporting robots.
D. A few of latest robots on the market today.

to each of the questions from 38 to 43.
Biological diversity has become widely recognized as a critical conservation issue only in the past two decades.
The rapid destruction of the tropical rain forests, which are the ecosystems with the highest known species diversity
on Earth, has awakened people to the importance and fragility of biological diversity. The high rate of species
extinctions in these environments is jolting, but it is important to recognize the significance of biological diversity
in all ecosystems. As the human population continues to expand, it will negatively affect one after another of Earth’s
11

ecosystems. In terrestrial ecosystems and in fringe marine ecosystems (such as wetlands), the most common problem
is habitat destruction. In most situations, the result is irreversible. Now humans are beginning to destroy marine
ecosystems through other types of activities, such as disposal and runoff of poisonous waste; in less than two
centuries, by significantly reducing the variety of species on Earth, they have irrevocably redirected the course of
evolution.
Certainly, there have been periods in Earth’s history when mass extinctions have occurred. The extinction of
the dinosaurs was caused by some physical event, either climatic or cosmic. There have also been less dramatic
extinctions, as when natural competition between species reached an extreme conclusion. Only 0.01 percent of the

species that have lived on Earth have survived to the present, and it was largely chance that determined which species
survived and which died out.
However, nothing has ever equaled the magnitude and speed with which the human species is altering the
physical and chemical world and demolishing the environment. In fact, there is wide agreement that it is the rate of
change humans are inflicting, even more than the changes themselves that will lead to biological devastation. Life
on Earth has continually been in flux as slow physical and chemical changes have occurred on Earth, but life needs
time to adapt-time for migration and genetic adaptation within existing species and time for the proliferation of new
genetic material and new species that may be able to survive in new environments.
Question 38. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. The cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs
B. The variety of species found in tropical rain forests

D. Earth’s climate has changed significantly since the dinosaurs’ extinction
Question 41. The word “jolting” is closest in meaning to_________.

Many people worked to create television. In 1862, Abbe Giovanna Caselli invented a machine called the
Pantelograph. Caselli was the first person to send a picture over wires. By the 1880s, Alexander Graham Bell
invented a machine that transmitted pictures and sound over wires. His machine was called the Photophone. The
World’s Fair was held in Paris, France, in the year 1900. The first International Congress of Electricity was held at
the World’s Fair. That was when the word television was first used – by a Russian named Constantin Perskyi. That
name stuck, and is now shortened to “TV.”
At the beginning of TV history, there were several types of TV technology. One system was a mechanical model
based on a rotating disc. (Rotating discs are discs that spin like CDs.) The other system was an electronic model. In
1906, Boris Rosing built the first working mechanical TV in Russia. In the 1920s, John Logie Baird in England and
Charles Francis Jenkins in the United States demonstrated improved mechanical systems. Philo Taylor Farnsworth
12

also showed an electronic system in San Francisco in 1927. His TV was the forerunner of today’s TV, which is an
electronic system based on his ideas.

Career Planning for High School Students
Most people need some preparation before they are ready for the workforce, and planning should begin long
before it is time to start a career.
Many high school students don't yet know what they want to do. High school is a great time to start thinking
about careers. Setlting on just one occupation in high school isn't necessary, but they should know how to explore
careers and put time into investigating them and learning about their skills and interests.
Understanding what you enjoy and what you are good at is the first step in exploring careers. It is important to
think about what you like to do because work will eventually be a big part of your life. Once you have thought about
the subjects and activities you like best, the next step is to look for careers that put those interests to use. If you love
sports, for example, you might consider a career as a gym teacher, or a coach.
Another approach to identifying potential career interests is to consider local employers and the types of jobs
they have. There are many jobs in manufacturing and healthcare near the high school. Talking directly to workers
can help you get information about what they do. If you don't know workers in occupations that interest you, ask
people such as parents, friends, or teachers for their contacts.
If job shadowing gives you a taste of what an occupation is like, imagine how helpful getting experience could
be. Students can begin getting career-related experiences in high school through internships, employment, and other
activities. Completing an internship is an excellent way to get experience. Internships are temporary, supervised
assignments designed to give students practical job training.
36. High school is a great time for students to ______.

A. identify their skills and interests
B. decide their future job or career
C. get ready for the workforce
D. start their career as soon as they can
37. The benefit of investigating the subjects and activities you like best is that ______ .
A. you can learn about yourself and your interests
B. you can do whatever you want before start work
C. you can easily choose the suitable career path
D. you can put your interests into activities at school
38. All of the following are the ways to identify career interests EXCEPT ______.
A. studying the subjects and activities you like best
B. have contacts with workers in the sector you are interested in
C. investigating the local economy and the types of jobs they offer
D. talking with your parents, friends, or teachers about careers
39. We can infer from the passage that high school students ______.
A. should get right qualifications for future jobs
B. take internship as a type of practical career training
C. don' need to get any jobs to get experience
D. talk directly to workers to know what to do soon
40. All of the following are true about internships EXCEPT that ______.
15

A. they are a good way to get experience
C. they needn't be related to a career
B. WORDLIST

B. they don't last a very long time

How to choose a career after high school!
Life after high school doesn't end. In fact, life begins once there are no more lockers, gym class, or teachers
nagging you about homework.
In terms of choosing the right career, it is important to consider a career assessment test in which you answer
a series of questions designed to analyse your strengths and weaknesses. While career tests should not be your main
source of decision making you can use them as a tool to help you decide what career might match your interests.

Think about your interests and hobbies. If you enjoy science, you may want to apply to college and pursue a
career in engineering or marine biology. Write a list of possible careers that match your interests and your
capabilities. If you find you are happiest when you work with others, jot down that you are a team player. In that
case, you may want to consider jobs that involve people interaction instead of careers like computer programming
or writing, which require more alone time. Speak to an adult you trust about your ideas and be willing to receive
feedback.
Narrow your options and look for a career with growth opportunities. While it is important to pick a career
that will stimulate your mind, it is also important to be practical about the job market. If you decide that you want to
go to college, you will need to pick a career that enables you to make a living after you graduate.
Jump into the first step of realizing your career dreams. If you have decided that you would like to pursue a
career that requires higher education, do your research on applying to the college or programme, including
qualifications, application deadlines, tuition fees and length of study. If you have decided on a career that does not
require higher education, start looking for ways to enter the field and gain experience. Speak to someone who already
has your dream job. This person can provide a better picture of the pros and cons of the profession.
36. Taking a career assessment helps you _______.
A. make the final decision B. answer a series of questions
C. use a tool in your future career
D. choose the most suitable career
37. The writing career will be most suitable for you if you _______.
A. would like to work on your own
B. feel happiest when working with others
C. like interaction with others
D. are willing to receive feedback from adults
38. All of the following are true about choosing a career EXCEPT that _______.
A. considering your interests and hobbies
B. taking part in the job market at once
C. realizing what makes you enthusiastic
D. collecting information about the courses
39. In the first step realizing your career dreams, you should _______.
A. apply your knowledge to your future career

B. choose a career that does not require higher education
C. prepare for qualifications and tuition fees
19

D. be aware of making your dream come true
40. When you speak to someone who already has your dream job, that person can help you _______.
A. draw the picture of your future profession with details
B. decide to follow higher education or pursue a career
C. understand the advantages and drawbacks of the career
D. get the feedback from the institution or the company

to each of the questions from 38 to 43.
Since the world became industrialized, the number of animal species that have either become extinct or have
neared extinction has increased. Bengal tigers, for instance, which once roamed the jungles in vast numbers, now
number only about 2,300. By the year 2025, it is estimated that they will become extinct. What is alarming about
the case of the Bengal tiger is that this extinction will have been caused almost entirely by poachers who, according
to some sources, are not always interested in material gain but in personal gratification. This is an example of
the callousness that is contributing to the problem of extinction. Animals, such as Bengal tiger, as well as other
endangered species, are valuable parts of the world’s ecosystem. International laws protecting these animals must be
enacted to ensure their survival and the survival of our planet.

Countries around the world have begun to deal with the problem in various ways. Some countries, in an effort
to circumvent the problem, have allocated large amounts of land to animal reserves. They then charge admission

In the United States in the early 1800's, individual state governments had more effect on the economy than did
the federal government. States chartered manufacturing, banking, mining, and transportation firms and participated
in the construction of various internal improvements such as canals, turnpikes, and railroads.
The states encouraged internal improvements in two distinct ways; first, by actually establishing state companies
to build such improvement; second, by providing part of the capital for mixed public-private companies setting out
to make a profit.

In the early nineteenth century, state governments also engaged in a surprisingly large amount of direct regulatory
activity, including extensive licensing and inspection programs. Licensing targets reflected both similarities in and
differences between the economy of the nineteenth century and that of today: in the nineteenth century,
state regulation through licensing fell especially on peddlers, innkeepers, and retail merchants of various kinds. The
perishable commodities of trade generally came under state inspection, and such important frontier staples as lumber
and gunpowder were also subject to state control. Finally, state governments experimented with direct labor and
business regulation designed to help the individual laborer or consumer, including setting maximum limits on hours
of work and restrictions on price-fixing by businesses.
Although the states dominated economic activity during this period, the federal government was not inactive. Its
goals were the facilitation of western settlement and the development of native industries. Toward these ends the
federal government pursued several courses of action. It established a national bank to stabilize banking activities in
the country and, in part, to provide a supply of relatively easy money to the frontier, where it was greatly needed for

settlement. It permitted access to public western lands on increasingly easy terms, culminating in the Homestead Act
of 1862, by which title to land could be claimed on the basis of residence alone. Finally, it set up a system of tariffs
that was basically protectionist in effect, although maneuvering for position by various regional interests produced
frequent changes in tariff rates throughout the nineteenth century.
