What I’ve learnt during this class and the team project
(By Phan Van Nhat aka Boris the giant)

(one of our trips, asking the CEO questions)

When I first heard about this subject, my first immediate reaction was really
positive , as I heard from my upperclassmen that it’s really fun but also really
important because it help effectively manage, control and supervise good, services
and people. When I heard that prof, Soren is going to be our teacher, i literally
shed tears of joy because he’s no doubt one of the coolest persons I’ve ever meet.
My expectations for this course were high, I was really committed to it because as

I mentioned, Operation Management is important. And I was not disappointed,
I’ve learnt more that I think I actually would, and I had a ton of fun with all the
activities although sometimes stressful and demotivating, actually really useful,
proven by the company’s manager reaction. But as good as the subject is, there are
still some downsides to this class that sometimes made me feel discouraged and
also really disconnected from the course, they were the loose ends that I’ve
managed to tie up, but unfortunately that took longer that I thought.

Looking back at what my friend and I have gone through, I’ve realized that
there are a lot of crucial things that needs to be done in order to execute an
operation and it’s a lot more complicated than I thought, but I’ve managed to
understand almost every thing that prof. Soren tried to impart, although the first
time we’ve tried making SOP and the executive dashboard was hard and there
were just too many factors that we looked for. But after a while and many
examples from the class (thanks to mr. Duc). The visit to the company we’ve
chosen for is a big success. It was our first time visiting a manufacturing facilities
by ourselves. We prepared every necessary question that we could find and after a
three-hour trip. We’ve collected more than enough data to do our project. We
thoroughly analyzed an leather-related products companies and creating their
FIRST SOP EVER. We’ve also used Decision-making matrix and decided what’s
needed to be changed, and that’s when we choose to analyze the material-

processing. We came out with a solution that helps them save a lot of money by
processing left-over leather, and we came out with a new and more utilized SOP.
We measured their KPI and made an executive dashboard, is a visual
representation that displays KPI that we see as most important to overall
company’s objectives. We made an ROI and at the end of the day, with our idea,

we’ve managed to saved them up to 7000+k dollars per month, that’s an insane
amount of money, with our knowledge and the thing we’ve learned throughout the
course

We came back 2 days after presented the idea to the company’s CEO and the
response we got is positive, the owner was very cool and chill. He was cooperative
the whole time and listened and noted our idea. I see this as an absolute win, as
we’ve got recognition for our work and it felt amazing! all of the hard work hadn’t
gone to waste at all. He (the owner) looked really happy and gave us a leathered
keychain (and recognition) as a reward. and all of that thanks to the teams effort

(my team)
But after all, there were still some struggling that I’ve faced during this course,
everything was great, but one thing has been bothering me for a while and it’s
KPI. I heard you explain it a thousand times but without more examples we
couldn’t make it clear, even some of my friends that are really smart from 12.2
didn’t understand it too, that left me with 2 questions: is it because of your
teaching or it’s just because we’re too stupid. But given that you’ve been teaching
this for years a just figured that we’re stupid. But then you addressed the issue and
it turned out that you thought we’d understand it faster than the others because you
had high hopes for us, and it’s true that my classmates are super smart and
managed to understand it at ease, but I personally struggled and sometimes felt
hopeless. But like a said, we managed to figure it out after a while, but it was a
little too late. I’m personally sorry for not living up for your expectation you put
for me.

But after all, this is still a really good course, just like your last course, the
things we’ve learned will really help us out in our careers, now I can confidently
say that if given enough time, I can execute an operation properly and carry it out,
I can now create an SOP and utilized it, making things a lot easier for the
company. I can analyze KPI, to provide objective evidence of progress towards
achieving a desired result. creating executive dashboards and making executive
summaries. and this essay is also a part of my learning, it’s called reflective essay.
Again, this is a really useful course and on the bright side, I really enjoyed it,
especially with the amount of activities we had
